Ms. Gregg is a master storyteller, as readers of her columns in the Evansville (Indiana) Courier and Press have known for 25 years. Book excerpt: From Our Ranch to Your Table: Hey ya'll! I'm Paige Murray. A lot has changed since the release of Southern Fried Skinnyfied several years ago. I'm now married to Ty Murray, the King of Cowboys. I also became a step-mom to Kase and a mom to Oakley. My recipes have become more family oriented and are perfect for an ongoing healthy lifestyle you can maintain. This isn't a cookbook for a short-term diet. Instead I cook the way nature intended with fresh produce, whole grains, healthy fats and meats. I'm from Lancaster, South Carolina but now call the TY Ranch in Stephenville, Texas home. I brought my cowboy boots and my love of food, cooking, fitness and nutrition with me. I took my favorite southern foods and added my own touch keeping health in mind, what I call Southern Fried Skinnyfied. I also learned to cook flavorful New Mexican and cowboy dishes that remind Ty of home. I'm not a chef and prefer stress-free recipes, you know the kind you find in your Granny's church cookbooks. These recipes are simple, wholesome and scrumptious. It's your everyday cookbook! Eating healthfully should go hand in hand with eating pleasurably. Of course I had to include just a couple of my favorite childhood dessert recipes too for those special occasions.I've also included some recipes that we love from our family and friends. To me, a passed-down recipe goes far beyond a meal. It evokes memories of that person and feelings of love, comfort, joy and excitement. Recipes are a way to preserve our heritage as well as a part of ourselves and the gatherings in the kitchen that make us who we are. I share photos of each person who shared a recipe with me. I also include photos we've taken of the ranch to give you a feel of what it's like to live on a real, working ranch. Hopefully these photos and recipes will allow you to create meals that are a meaningful experience.

Book Waiting for the Electricity

Download or read book Waiting for the Electricity written by Christina Nichol and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the republic of Georgia, the Communists are long gone, replaced by . . . well, by what? Something much more confusing. There are no jobs in the cities. And when there are jobs, employees aren’t compensated. And when they are compensated, it’s because the jobs are . . . not strictly scrupulous. In the village, life goes on much as it always did, but these days, the homemade farmers cheese is giving way to the oil pipeline. And as for romance in this strange, confounding modern age . . . the less said, the better. But there’s one man in Georgia who remains unseduced by corruption, unfazed by nostalgia, and unable to abandon chivalry, no matter how antiquated a notion it may be. This man is Slims Achmed Makashvili, a humble maritime lawyer and the hero of this brilliant novel. When Slims discovers an application for an American small business internship program sponsored by Hillary Clinton, he knows that he has found his calling. In his letters to Senator Clinton, Slims dreams of bringing efficiency, opportunity, and the American dream to his homeland, even as his friends and relatives embrace decadence, lethargy, and a staggering array of unsavory business practices. But when he finally gets to America—specifically to utopian San Francisco, where the streets are paved with quinoa—Slims sees what reform and progress look like up close. And suddenly, his loud, bickering family and his anguished, joyful country no longer seem so grim. A gleeful picaresque, a visionary satire, and a work of extraordinary empathy and imagination, Waiting for the Electricity is a marvelously imaginative debut novel.

  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Hyperbole and a Half written by Allie Brosh and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times Bestseller “Funny and smart as hell” (Bill Gates), Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half showcases her unique voice, leaping wit, and her ability to capture complex emotions with deceptively simple illustrations. FROM THE PUBLISHER: Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices. This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written. Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to. FROM THE AUTHOR: This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative—like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it—but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book: Pictures Words Stories about things that happened to me Stories about things that happened to other people because of me Eight billion dollars* Stories about dogs The secret to eternal happiness* *These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!

Book Riding the Edge

Download or read book Riding the Edge written by Michael S. Tobin and published by Greenleaf Book Group. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two soulmates embark on an around-the-world journey, leaving the security of their well-ordered lives in search of larger truths. Forty-seven years ago, Michael discovered his soulmate Deborah on a dance floor in Keene, New Hampshire. It took her soul a few years and an around-the-world bike trek to fully reciprocate. Riding the Edge is the astonishing tale of the six-month odyssey that profoundly shaped the next 564 months of their lives together. Taking place in 1980, Michael and Deborah—an American Jew and American Arab, respectively—leave the security of their well-ordered lives as psychologists sleepwalking toward marriage and family to explore and take risks in search of life’s larger truths. What they find is a story of magnificent vistas and memorable moments that enliven their senses to the beauty of the world even as it also reveals the vilest of human cruelty. Simple meals become transcendent experiences and chance encounters are serendipitous markers along a road directing them toward personal and spiritual transformation. Each place leaves its mark—Paris and the French countryside, Italy, Greece, war-torn Beirut, Israel—and each person an imprint even as Deborah and Michael struggle to find the truth of their love. Will they find a life partner or merely a stepping-stone to another, deeper connection? It’s a journey that has a mind and heart of its own. In the end, each story, kindness, and cruelty uncover the humanness that connects all living things and shows that love is a powerful, healing life force.

Book Unsuitable for Ladies

Download or read book Unsuitable for Ladies written by Jane Robinson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-09-27 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real ladies do not travel - or so it was once said. This collection of women's travel writing dispels the notion by showing how there are few corners of the world that have not been visited by women travellers. There are also few difficulties, physical or emotional, real or imagined, that have not been met and usually overcome by these same women. Jane Robinson's first book,Wayward Women, was a guide to women travellers and their writing, and having read over a thousand of their books she is uniquely qualified to compile this anthology. Life is never dull for her intrepid women, whether diving to the bed of the Timor Sea or reaching the summit of Annapurna. From an encounter with a snake in the Amazon jungle to shipwreck and kidnap on the Barbary Coast, there are tales of adventure, derring-do, and great danger. There are also moving accounts of unimaginable hardship, including caring for a family in an ammunition cart during the siege of Delhi and a journey through Tibet that leaves its author childless and widowed. There is no such thing as a typical woman traveller—and there never has been—as this exhilarating anthology shows on a journey of its own through sixteen centuries of travel writing, aboard almost anything from a Bugatti to a Bath chair. You are taken as far afield as it is possible to go, in the company of some of the most extraordinary characters you are ever likely to meet.

Trapped between the high wall on the left and the unbroken row of parked cars to the right, the animal ran at a relaxed canter directly down the center of the road a few feet in front of me. I slowed even more. The beast was caught in the headlights and I saw it was no neighborhood pooch out for a midnight stroll. It was a coyote and it was hunting.
