Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Sports in the Far West ON my return, a short time since, to my native land, from the wilds of America, it was not at first my intention to offer to the public the contents of the diary I had kept during my travels, and written out in detail as an employment for my leisure hours, for the exclusive use of my family in Germany. Incited, however, by the interest awakened by the publication of a few extracts in one of our periodicals, and yielding to the wishes expressed by various friends who had read the remainder, I undertook to correct and revise my notes, and to mould into a continuous narrative a diary which I had only kept when circumstances worthy of being chronicled arose, - for instance, on the voyage out, on my march through the United States, during my sojourn among the swamps of Arkansas, and finally during my hunting trip in the Ozark moun tains. Book excerpt: Wild Sports in the Far West by Friedrich Gerstäcker. Even that mighty hunter, Gordon Cumming himself, must own himself completely surpassed by this young German, Gerstaecker. -"The" Illustrated London News, 1854. "One of the first men to come hunting in Arkansas." -Bass, For the Trees (1981). "Frederick Gerstaecker, the German hunter, tramped all over the State from 1839 to 1842." -Shinn, Pioneers and Makers of Arkansas, 1908. Called "The White Bear" by Indians, because of his reputation as a great hunter, Frederick Gerstaecker (1816-1872) hunted bears, panthers, and wolves in the sparcely populated wilderness of Arkansas during the years 1839 to 1842. In 1859, Gerstaecker published a narrative of his life as a backwoodsman in Arkansas titled "Wild Sports in the Far West." The book contains entertaining accounts of close scrapes with bears, panthers, and wolves as well as rough hard-drinking frontiersmen and pioneers.

Book excerpt: An exciting first-hand account of an early deer hunter's explorations of the unspoiled American wilderness Voyages from New York, through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri, and as far south as Louisiana. Gerstacker arrived in America from Germany in 1837, drawn by stories he had heard of the immense forests, excellent for deer hunting. He wandered from Buffalo to New Orleans, visiting frontiersmen in their backwoods cabins and living off the land, eating venison, acorns, sassafras leaves, and wild honey. He found Arkansas ideal for hunting, and encountered all sorts of wildlife, including alligators, wolves, bears, and deer, in his travels. His hunting journal gives a fascinating look at the early-nineteenth century American landscape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sporting Adventures in the Far West Having been a wanderer for nearly seven years in the Par West, a part of the time being ere railways were known i there, and when very few whites, except the troops, were found in regions which now boast of thousands, I devoted particular attention to studying the fauna of the country, especially the game, whether it was fur, fin, or feather. My object in preparing this work has been to give the general characteristics, the haunts, habits, and the best method of hunting the largest class of game; and as my facts are derived from personal experience, and from that of some of the most famous scouts and hunters I met in the West, I hope they may be found generally accurate. The contests between men and the fiercer creatures which are related were, when I do not speak personally, heard around the camp fire or in the Indians wigwam, and one or two were culled from Western newspapers. Having no desire to pose as a Nimrod, I may say that some of my hunting was as much for the purpose of studying the fer nature as for killing them, and that their life was frequently more pleasing to me than their death. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Sports of the West: Interspersed With Legendary Tales, and Local Sketches Some explanation may be necessary for obtruding upon the public the private details of a Sportsman's life, and particularly when the scene of his exploits is laid within the four seas of Britain. In the customary course of field adventure, few besides the individual concerned are much interested in the successes and disappointments he experiences; and rural sports are, in all their general incidents, so essentially alike, as to render their minute description almost invariably a dull and unprofitable record. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Sports of the West, Vol. 1 of 2: With Legendary Tales and Local Sketches That the scenic and personal sketches are faithful, the reader is assured; some were writ ten on the spot, and others traced from vivid recollection. Those with whom the author shot these wild moors, or fished the waters, will best estimate the fidelity of the descriptions; and one valued friend, though now beneath another sun, will probably recall the days he spent by fell and flood, and bring to memory those light and joyous nights when he caroused in a mountain bivouac, and rested in a moor land hut.
