Book The Wild Sonnets Volume VI 501 600

Download or read book The Wild Sonnets Volume VI 501 600 written by Nicholas Korn and published by . This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With The Wild Sonnets series, I have created my own take on the sonnet form - which maintains the structure and stricture of convention, while allowing a more fluid approach to both the rhythm and rhyme schemes. Essentially, a Wild Sonnet is two stanzas of seven lines each - composed of ambling iambics and capped with a rhyming couplet. As a writer, I admire and am deeply influenced by poets such as Shakespeare, Dylan Thomas, Emily Dickinson and others for whom the sounds of the language are as crucial to the poetic experience as the meanings of the words. As for the style in this collection - The Wild Sonnets are meant to be dramatic in nature, almost short soliloquies that seem to be an immediate, poetic response to some thought or comment that has just been introduced.

Book The Wild Sonnets Volume I 1 100

Download or read book The Wild Sonnets Volume I 1 100 written by Nicholas Korn and published by Bookbaby. This book was released on 2018-07-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection presents first one hundred Wild Sonnets in the ongoing sequence by poet, dramatist and filmmaker, Nicholas Korn. While the poems in this series are not sonnets in the strict sense--they are fourteen lines of ambling iambic, most often pent up in a pentameter, but occasionally not. Divided into two stanzas of seven lines each, the only definitely placed rhymes are the couplets that cap lines 6 & 7 and 13 &14. The remaining rhymes, when they occur, are in turn, internal. As for the style--the wild sonnets are meant to be dramatic in nature, almost short soliloquies that seem to be an immediate, poetic response to some thought or comment that has just been spoken or introduced. If they are reminiscent of the Renaissance, it would be of the stage more than the pages of Sidney or Spenser. - 38 - Amid the mad immediate I sing, Whether it be in omen of what's yet To come, or amen for all that has. Are we not in the eye of wonder, Whether in the glinting rain or sheen Of snow, in recollection's echo, or the ache That after triumph takes not long to overtake? Time touches us but briefly, like the strings Of some strange instrument, fashioned To be played by everything, but timbred, grained And shaped in chords and colors of our own. Subtle in song, ensemble and solo both-- Whatever melody and the moment bring Will I to the havoc of heaven's hearing sing.

Book excerpt: John Keats is among the greatest English poets. (He himself imagined he would be counted so!) For some readers, his odes define the essence of poetry. We also discover in Keats a great composer of sonnets. Here, for the first time published in a separate edition, are all sixty-four sonnets, the first written when Keats was eighteen, the last just five years later. Reading these poems, you'll experience the wonder of Keats's growing poetic powers; you'll feel the "shock of recognition" when you come upon the great ones. Presented with an introduction by Edward Hirsch, and accompanying explanatory notes, the sonnets stand out as a triumph of their own. "Between 1814 and 1819, John Keats wrote sixty-four sonnets. He was eighteen years old when he composed his first sonnet; he was turning twenty-four when he completed his last one. He restlessly experimented with the fourteen-line form and used it to plunge into (and explore) his emotional depths. You can sit down and read these poems in a single night and have a complete Keatsian experience—he breathes close and offers himself to us; his presence is near. You can also read them throughout your adulthood and never really get to the bottom of them. These short, durable poems are filled with the mysteries of poetry. "In the sonnets, Keats conveys the range of his interests, his concerns, his attachments, his obsessions. Some are light and improvisatory, tossed off in fifteen minutes, a moment's thought. Some are polemics, or romantic period pieces; others are brooding testaments or compulsive outpourings, which seem to expand on the page. These sonnets are replete with a sensuous feeling for nature—'The poetry of earth is never dead'—that looks back to Wordsworth and forward to Frost. They also luxuriate in the spaces of imagination—'Much have I travell'd in the realms of gold'—and trigger the daydreaming capacities of the mind." —from the Introduction by Edward Hirsch

Book The Sonnets of Thomas Pringle

Download or read book The Sonnets of Thomas Pringle written by Patrick Lenahan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-07-17 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Scottish poet Thomas Pringle emigrated to the Cape Colony in 1820 he voyaged also into a new creative life and an art responsive to his colonial home, “sterner verse” for “darker scenes”. Accompanying him to the Cape, the sonnet became his most consistent choice for capturing his experiences and convictions, his personal crises and the greater trauma of colonial appropriation and racial oppression. In this study his unique contribution to the Romantic-era sonnet is for the first time given its full due, through readings that are as attentive to form and formal agency as to the cultural, social and historical conditions in which they are enmeshed. Moving beyond colonial theory to consider issues of literary migration, this illuminating work shows how Pringle effectively opened up a radical conversation between the habitual modes of perception and response of British Romanticism and his new, southern world.

Book The Forms of Michael Field

Download or read book The Forms of Michael Field written by LeeAnne M. Richardson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Field, the poetic identity created by Katharine Bradley (1846-1914) and her niece Edith Cooper (1862-1913), ceaselessly experimented with forms of identity and forms of literary expression. The Forms of Michael Field argues that their modes of self-creation are analogous to their poetic creations, and that exploring them in tandem is the best way to understand Michael Field’s cultural and literary importance. Michael Field deploys a different form in each volume of their lyric poetry: translations of Sappho, ekphrasis, songs, sonnets, and devotional verse. They also appropriate and revise the dramatic genres of verse tragedy and the masque. Each of these experiments in form enable Michael Field to differently address the cultural questions that beset late-Victorian women writers. Drawing on the insights of new lyric studies and new formalism, this book analyzes Michael Field’s continual quest for the aesthetic forms that best express their evolving ideas about identity and sexuality, gender and sacrifice, lyric voice and authority.
