Book Introduction to Falkland Islands

Download or read book Introduction to Falkland Islands written by Gilad James, PhD and published by Gilad James Mystery School. This book was released on with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Falkland Islands, also known as the Malvinas, are a British overseas territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean. The archipelago consists of over 700 islands, with the two largest being East Falkland and West Falkland. The Falkland Islands has a population of approximately 3,500 people, with most residents living in the capital city of Stanley. English is the official language and the currency is the Falkland Islands pound. The Falkland Islands have a rich history dating back to the 16th century when the Spanish and British both claimed ownership of the islands. In 1833, the British established a permanent settlement and the islands were officially declared a British colony in 1841. In 1982, a conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom broke out over the ownership of the islands, resulting in a 74-day war that claimed the lives of over 900 people. The islands remain a point of political tension between the two countries, with Argentina continuing to claim sovereignty over the Falkland Islands. Despite this, the Falkland Islands have become a popular tourist destination known for their unique wildlife, rugged landscapes, and British culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new, thoroughly updated second edition of Bradt's Falkland Islands remains the only standalone guide to this British Overseas Territory and is ideal for both independent and cruise visitors alike. New for this edition is a dedicated full-colour wildlife and natural history section, as well as all the most recent details needed for a smooth trip, from planning and history to Stanley restaurants and hotels, conservation issues, wildlife watching trips and how to explore beyond the capital. East and West Falkland are covered, and so too are Sea Lion, Pebble, Carcass, Saunders, Keppel, Weddell, Staats and Beaver islands. Situated in the South Atlantic Ocean over 300 miles from South America the Falkland Islands are one of the truly wild places in the world, a photographer's delight home to albatrosses, penguins and other wildlife as well as to over 3,000 people. The Falkland Islands are a must-visit location for those interested in the wild outdoors, especially anyone wanting to see penguins, seals and lots more. It's not all about penguins, though, as the islands' abundant wildlife and spectacular scenery along with comfortable accommodation, good wholesome food and welcoming people create a wonderful place to visit. The thriving town of Stanley gives way to the wild open spaces of the 'camp' with its scattered settlements, long sandy beaches, isolated islands and rocky outcrops. With Bradt's Falkland Islands you can plan how to fly between islands, discover the 'camp' (rural areas), visit multiple penguin colonies, sample a wide range of cakes and cookies at a 'smoko' (morning or afternoon tea break), watch Black-browed Albatrosses, and visit the magnificent collection of artefacts and curios from around the islands at the new Historic Dockyard Museum. Whatever your interest, this is the essential guide for a successful trip.

Book The Falkland Islands

Download or read book The Falkland Islands written by Ian J. Strange and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Falklands lie isolated in the South Atlantic some 300 miles east of the tip of South America. Today sheep-farming is the principal occupation, and the extremely active community are very conscious of their identity and their islands' history. Famous people and events have long been associated with the Magellan was probably the first man to sight the islands, Darwin landed from the "Beagle," and great naval actions took place in the vicinity during both world wars. In spite of fairly modern communications, life on the islands has not changed radically over the last hundred years. There is a very active social and cultural life, and local customs are maintained in a very live way. As small as the population is, however, the islands' defence force holds military parades on Remembrance Sunday and other anniversaries. The islands in fact offer a surprising number of local pursuits as well as being interesting geographically and ecologically speaking. It is undoubtedly significant that the great liner "Ile de France" called at Port Stanley on a recent world cruise, for the richness of bird and sea-mammal life alone makes the islands worth a visit, be it by air or steamer from Montevideo. This first full account of the group by an author, who is himself a Falklander and a naturalist, has indeed really strong interest for historians and biologists as well as the growing body of island enthusiasts." --Descripción del editor.
