Book Wild Grapes and Rattlesnakes

Download or read book Wild Grapes and Rattlesnakes written by George Cullinen and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2004 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild Grapes and Rattlesnakes chronicles the extraordinary life and times of George Cullinen, Spanish Civil War veteran, union organizer and anti-war activist. Unlike other Spanish Civil War veterans such as George Orwell and Arthur Koestler, Cullinen's devotion to the cause of the Spanish Republic never wavered, even when the trauma of shell shock finally drove him from the battlefield. In this evocative memoir, Cullinen recounts the events in his life before, during and after the war, offering wry insights into the forces that shaped the history of the last century, with Spain as a cruel microcosm for the global struggle against Fascism that was yet to come. Cullinen recalls his youthful follies growing up in the Pacific Northwest as a rough and tumble prelude to his political radicalization in the years following World War I. While still in his teens, he became a merchant seaman and at one point, hoping to create a new life for himself, he jumped ship in Japan, only to be apprehended and deported. Other early adventures include his riding the rails during the Depression, working for the Civilian Conservation Corps, and fighting for the rights of fellow seaman on the waterfront. In later years, as an educator and filmmaker, he devoted his life to the cause of world peace. While fierce in his beliefs and driven by an inflamed social conscience, Cullinen tells his tale with compassion, humility, and self-effacing humor.

Book Against the Hounds of Hell

Download or read book Against the Hounds of Hell written by Peter Eisenstadt and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspiration to Martin Luther King Jr., James Farmer, and other leaders of the civil rights movement, Howard Thurman was a crucial figure in the history of African Americans in the 20th century. Until now, however, he has not received the biographical treatment he deserves. In Against the Hounds of Hell, Thurman scholar Peter Eisenstadt offers a fascinating exploration of the life of this religious thinker and activist. Thurman’s life, was as notable for its remarkable variety as its accomplishments. The first significant African American pacifist, Thurman was the first African American to meet Mahatma Gandhi. An early and outspoken feminist, environmentalist, and advocate for social and economic justice, he was one of the first and most insistent mid-twentieth-century proponents of racial integration. At the same time, he was a key figure in the emergence of mysticism and spirituality as an alternative to formal religion. Thurman dedicated his career to challenging what he called the "hounds of hell"—the ways in which fear, deception, and hatred so often dogged the steps of African Americans and the marginalized and disinherited peoples of the world. This biography will at last establish this multifaceted historical personage as a leading figure of twentieth-century American politics, religion, and culture.

Book Tales from the Golden Age of Rattlesnake Hunting

Download or read book Tales from the Golden Age of Rattlesnake Hunting written by Donald G. Wheeler and published by . This book was released on 2001-10-01 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book written with a genuine love and concern for these often maligned animals-and with a knowledge of their role in the ecosystem. There are eleven chapters with sixty-three photographs, more than half of these in color. Written about a time not so long ago when collecting and releasing these reptiles was not as restricted as it is now. The stories are of capturing snakes in the wild. From forests to swamps from backyard to desert. Sometimes with danger sometimes not. But always with excitement. There is a section on the identification of venomous snakes of the United States including precautions and advice on first aid. A chapter on rattlesnake round-ups and their effects on snake populations is discussed. Diagrams explain how a rattle works, how the venom delivery system operates and the efficacy of a striking coil. Fallacies and folklore are examined and set straight. The stories are real. The snakes are exciting. The excitement is real. E.C.O. 915 Seymour, Lansing, MI 48906, (517)487-5595, Fax (517) 371-2709, email; ecoorders@hotmail, website; www.ecouniverse.com.
