Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1995, Texas Historical Commission underwater archaeologists discovered the wreck of La Salle’s La Belle, remnant of an ill-fated French attempt to establish a colony at the mouth of the Mississippi River that landed instead along today’s Matagorda Bay in Texas. During 1996–1997, the Commission uncovered the ship’s remains under the direction of archaeologist James E. Bruseth and employing a team of archaeologists and volunteers. Amid the shallow waters of Matagorda Bay, a steel cofferdam was constructed around the site, creating one of the most complex nautical archaeological excavations ever attempted in North America and allowing the archaeologists to excavate the sunken wreck much as if it were located on dry land. The ship’s hold was discovered full of everything the would-be colonists would need to establish themselves in the New World; more than 1.8 million artifacts were recovered from the site. More than two decades in the making, due to the immensity of the find and the complexity of cataloging and conserving the artifacts, this book thoroughly documents one of the most significant North American archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century.

Download or read book Where Do Camels Belong written by Ken Thompson and published by Greystone Books. This book was released on 2014-09-13 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ecologist and author of Do We Need Pandas? “presents a stimulating challenge to our perceptions of nature” and non-native species (George Monbiot). You may be surprised to learn that camels evolved and lived for tens of millions of years in North America—and also that the leek, national symbol of Wales, was a Roman import to Britain, as were chickens, rabbits and pheasants. These classic examples highlight the issues of “native” and “invasive” species. We have all heard the horror stories of invasives wreaking havoc on ecosystems. But do we need to fear invaders? In this controversial book, Ken Thompson asks: Why do very few introduced species succeed, why do so few of them go on to cause trouble, and what is the real cost of invasions? He also discusses whether fear of invasive species could be getting in the way of conserving biodiversity and responding to climate change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you know how the dog got its cold nose? Or why the crab has a flat back? How the wild animals came to the earth, and how the Caribbean got its name? If the answer to these questions is "no," then you will be delighted to find out about these and other matters in this exciting collection of fables from the Caribbean, collected and narrated by Dorothy St. Aubyn. When the sun goes down and the cackling fowls flutter up into the guava tree to settle down for the night, that is the time when "Old Creole," the morocoy, and his friends tell stories to each other. They tell of the legends of the old folk in the misty mountains and the endless jungles, they tell of the tricks that the animals play on each other in the clearings of the forest, and they tell of the encounters of spirits, men, and animals on the sandy beaches. So ruffle your feathers, fly up into the tree, and listen with wonder to these fables from the Caribbean!
