Book Barbarian Days

Download or read book Barbarian Days written by William Finnegan and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Autobiography** Included in President Obama’s 2016 Summer Reading List “Without a doubt, the finest surf book I’ve ever read . . . ” —The New York Times Magazine Barbarian Days is William Finnegan’s memoir of an obsession, a complex enchantment. Surfing only looks like a sport. To initiates, it is something else: a beautiful addiction, a demanding course of study, a morally dangerous pastime, a way of life. Raised in California and Hawaii, Finnegan started surfing as a child. He has chased waves all over the world, wandering for years through the South Pacific, Australia, Asia, Africa. A bookish boy, and then an excessively adventurous young man, he went on to become a distinguished writer and war reporter. Barbarian Days takes us deep into unfamiliar worlds, some of them right under our noses—off the coasts of New York and San Francisco. It immerses the reader in the edgy camaraderie of close male friendships forged in challenging waves. Finnegan shares stories of life in a whites-only gang in a tough school in Honolulu. He shows us a world turned upside down for kids and adults alike by the social upheavals of the 1960s. He details the intricacies of famous waves and his own apprenticeships to them. Youthful folly—he drops LSD while riding huge Honolua Bay, on Maui—is served up with rueful humor. As Finnegan’s travels take him ever farther afield, he discovers the picturesque simplicity of a Samoan fishing village, dissects the sexual politics of Tongan interactions with Americans and Japanese, and navigates the Indonesian black market while nearly succumbing to malaria. Throughout, he surfs, carrying readers with him on rides of harrowing, unprecedented lucidity. Barbarian Days is an old-school adventure story, an intellectual autobiography, a social history, a literary road movie, and an extraordinary exploration of the gradual mastering of an exacting, little-understood art.

On their path, they discover an abandoned fox cub lying in the snow. Despite foxes being some of the most feared and cruel of all predators, they decide to raise the cub as their own. Meanwhile, another creature born of winter itself is uniting the Flesheaters under one creed to begin a great hunt, and as the Foragers raise their orphaned cub in little knowledge of the looming threat, the Wintergazer is ever growing in both power... and hunger'

At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. Book 18 533 Days and 18 Inches to Eternity

Download or read book 18 533 Days and 18 Inches to Eternity written by Louis Bukowiec and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I'm eighty-eight, and I am awestruck that I have written a book (my first ever)! My wife Joyce died in 2015. For a time, grief and loneliness were my companions. I soon settled down, doing old-folks things like crossword puzzles, watching TV, etc. Some of my grandkids asked me what it was like being a kid during the Great Depression and World War II. Then one day, my friend Charlie gave me a packet of four one-hundred-page notebook pads. He said, "Maybe you can use these." Coincidence? So with pencil in hand, I started writing my story about my favorite subject""me! Many memories were rekindled, and suddenly, I had a new hobby. A word became a sentence, a sentence, a paragraph or a chapter. How far could I go with this? Night after night, the stories flowed through my mind. Quiet, tearful nights became commonplace. One night, I awoke with tears in my eyes and a word in my heart""redemption. That morning, I calculated how many days from my birth, January 2, 1930, to my rebirth, October 4, 1980. It was 18,533 days. Now my story had a working title""18,533 Days to Eternity. As I read my story, I realized that I was a normal, hardworking person with a vision, like you. However, unlike most of you, I was an impulsive, addicted, egotistical, train wreck. But God had a plan for my life. He wanted to lead me from my egocentric mind to the desire of his love, my heart. It was only eighteen inches. Hope! Never give up!

Book Seven Days of Faith 2d Edition

Download or read book Seven Days of Faith 2d Edition written by R. Paul Stevens and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These days, people talk about their schedules filling up 24/7--twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. We wear busyness like a merit badge, as if the more we do, the better we become. But R. Paul Stevens says this is not biblical. Nor is it helpful. For Christians life isn't about checking off "to-do" lists. It's about connecting with God and infiltrating thoughtful, biblical faith into our everyday lives. Sometimes that means activity, but sometimes not. Everyday spirituality--the subject of the book--embraces purposeful times of work, relationships, and rest, centered on God instead of personal or cultural expectations. But how can you do it? It's not easy exiting the fast track to practice a slowed-down yet down-to-earth holiness. Stevens understands this, and offers practical insights to developing a "subversive spirituality"--a meaningful faith that seeps into your work, family, sexuality, friendships, outreach, aloneness, and leisure--and fills you with joy. But most importantly, it motivates you to lovingly abide with God seven days a week. Matthew the Poor, an Eastern monk in Egypt, once said that "life is but one single way that leads to the kingdom of God."

Book Fighting Red Cloud s Warriors True Tales Of Indian Days When The West Was Young

Download or read book Fighting Red Cloud s Warriors True Tales Of Indian Days When The West Was Young written by E. A. Brininstool and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE winning of the West was no child’s play! It was war—war of the most brutal and inhuman type on the part of both Indians and whites. The Indian was fighting for his home, his commissary, his lands—lands ceded him through solemn treaty with the United States government—and what man, of any nation (if he is any sort of man) will not fight “for home and native land”? The white man fought to advance the cause of civilization, irrespective (in most instances) of the rights of the Indian, and without regard to his future existence. Civilization won—and to civilization’s shame, it was at the cost of unnumbered thousands of lives and the shedding of much human blood of both whites and reds. I am not a believer in the old adage that “the only good Indian is a dead Indian.” My sympathy is with the red man. The early white traders who trafficked with the Indian were, as a rule, a class of men of little conscience and few scruples, who would stoop to any deceit or trickery to rob the Indian of his furs and pelts. It was the early trader who introduced whiskey among the Indian tribes; who, through fraud and knavery, turned the red man against the whites of whatever class. This was the beginning of the hatred and contempt which made all white men, good or bad, soon look alike to the warring savage. In this volume of the “Frontier Series” I have written of a few of the most noted battles between the red man and the white man. As in the previous volume, no fiction is employed in these pages. Every incident related actually occurred, and is a part of the history of the old West. Some biographical sketches of noted frontier characters are included. The chapter on the destruction of the buffalo may well make the present-day sportsman pause and reflect.
