Book Wild by Design Ploughing On

Download or read book Wild by Design Ploughing On written by Ian D. Rotherham and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wild by Design seminar was aimed at all those involved in the conservation of sites and landscapes. It was intended to address critical issues of landscape management and landscape change including how agricultural, urban and post-industrial landscapes change and evolve. It considered the impacts of agricultural diversification and extensification, as well as proposals for the release of upland areas from pastoral grazing management. The Ploughing on Regardless seminar took place in October 2003. It considered the impacts of cultivation on our natural and historic environments, how they have and are being assessed and how damage can be mitigated. It raised issues of the ways in which Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) can protect uncultivated land from improvement. Speakers and participants at both events included landscape professionals, archaeologists, ecologists, earth scientists, planners, conservationists and workers in education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the spread of new agricultural practice in the half millennium after 1350, and reconstructs a neglected part of Europe's agricultural past: the introduction of fodder crops, and the continuous reorganisation of traditional botanical inputs within a new system of farming. It breaks entirely new ground by showing the distant historical origins of a major transformation in land potential and farm productivity. A vast range of evidence is cited from Italy, France, England and elsewhere to produce in effect an economic, social and cultural history of Europe in which the focus is on the long-distance consequences of the 'agricultural revolution'.

Book Urban Stormwater and Flood Management

Download or read book Urban Stormwater and Flood Management written by Veeriah Jegatheesan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the experiences of engineers and scientists from Australia and the United Kingdom providing the current status on the management of stormwater and flooding in urban areas and suggesting ways forward. It forms a basis for the development of a framework for the implementation of integrated and optimised storm water management strategies and aims to mitigate the adverse impacts of the expanding urban water footprint. Among other topics it also features management styles of stormwater and flooding and describes biodiversity and ecosystem services in relation to the management of stormwater and the mitigation of floods. Furthermore, it places an emphasis on sustainable storm water management measures. Population growth, urbanisation and climate change will pose significant challenges to engineers, scientists, medical practitioners, policy makers and practitioners of several other disciplines. If we consider environmental and water engineers, they will have to face challenges in designing smart and efficient water systems which are robust and resilient to overcome shrinking green spaces, increased urban heat islands, damages to natural waterways due to flooding caused by increased stormwater flow. This work provides valuable information for practitioners and students at both senior undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Book Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead

Download or read book Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead written by Olga Tokarczuk and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE "A brilliant literary murder mystery." —Chicago Tribune "Extraordinary. Tokarczuk's novel is funny, vivid, dangerous, and disturbing, and it raises some fierce questions about human behavior. My sincere admiration for her brilliant work." —Annie Proulx In a remote Polish village, Janina devotes the dark winter days to studying astrology, translating the poetry of William Blake, and taking care of the summer homes of wealthy Warsaw residents. Her reputation as a crank and a recluse is amplified by her not-so-secret preference for the company of animals over humans. Then a neighbor, Big Foot, turns up dead. Soon other bodies are discovered, in increasingly strange circumstances. As suspicions mount, Janina inserts herself into the investigation, certain that she knows whodunit. If only anyone would pay her mind . . . A deeply satisfying thriller cum fairy tale, Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead is a provocative exploration of the murky borderland between sanity and madness, justice and tradition, autonomy and fate. Whom do we deem sane? it asks. Who is worthy of a voice?

Book Creating Context in Andean Cultures

Download or read book Creating Context in Andean Cultures written by Rosaleen Howard-Malverde and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-04-24 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major concern in current anthropological thinking is that the method of recording or translating into writing a society's cultural expressions--dance, rituals, pottery, the social use of space, et al--cannot help but fundamentally alter the meaning of the living words and deeds of the culture in question. Consequently, recent researchers have developed more dialogic methods for collecting, interpreting, and presenting data. These new techniques have yielded much success for anthropologists working in Latin America, especially in their efforts to understand how economically, politically, and socially subordinated groups use culture and language to resist the dominant national culture and to assert a distinct historical identity. This collection addresses these issues of "texts" and textuality as it explores various Latin American languages and cultures.
