Download or read book The Price of Escape written by David Unger and published by Akashic Books. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A Jewish man flees 1938 Germany only to find a new and unexpected nightmare” in Guatemala, in this tale of dark humor and desperate suspense (Publishers Weekly). In 1938, as Samuel Berkow’s tramp steamer from Germany approaches Puerto Barrios, Guatemala, he is full of hope that he will be able to find a family member and begin to remake his life in the new world. But in this sweltering, chaotic, and hostile port town, he will have to face down many obstacles—including himself—before he can hope to truly escape . . . “Unger’s sharp prose deftly conveys Samuel’s frustrations and confusions as he encounters characters like a troublesome dwarf, a volatile American fruit company manager, a crazed ex-priest, and a friendly telegraph operator who all offer help with one hand but uncertainty with the other.” —Publishers Weekly “Evoking both Kafka and Conrad, Unger’s character study of a broken man in a culture broken by a ravenous corporation makes compelling reading.” —Booklist “Unger’s tale utterly seduces with its mix of the exotic and the familiar.” —Toronto Star

Download or read book One death is too many written by Rita Donaghy and published by Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009-07-08 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 211 men died in the construction industry in the three year period 2005-06 to 2007-08. This "unacceptable level of fatalities" led to the commissioning of this inquiry, though Rita Donaghy remarks that there is no public sense of shock at the regular toll of fatalities in the industry and there is a need to raise the profile of these tragedies so that a construction fatality becomes socially unacceptable. The construction industry generally is modelled to provide maximum flexibility. Consequently the majority of functions are contracted out and at least 40 per cent of workers are self-employed or in the Construction Industry Scheme. The advantages are obvious in that it reduces overheads and some commentators argue that it improves profitability and productivity. The disadvantages are that it becomes more difficult for a safety culture to flourish, worker engagement is weak, employment security and continuity is minimal and skills training is at best patchy. The findings of the Review's investigation of a number of case studies reveal a combination of factors for each fatal accident of which the most frequently cited are: (a) the incidence of training factors, experience; (b) information and advice deficiencies; (c) risk perception; (d) rescheduling of work without planning; (e) minor / one-off jobs; (f) compliance; (g) equipment operability, space, personal protective equipment (PPE) issues and tools not designed to fit the user / task. 28 recommendations are made.

Download or read book Guidebook on Public Private Partnership in Pharmacy written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian Development Bank, along with the people and institutions of Asia and the Pacific and the rest of the world, believes in the strength of partnerships and collective action. At the core of this belief is a desire to initiate and develop partnerships that will help governments address health care needs of growing populations, particularly women and children. Public–private partnerships (PPPs) have evolved from this need to relate to one another and work together. Governments recognize that they cannot do the job alone, particularly in the health sector where new disease patterns and the impact of climate change demand innovative solutions, such as PPP in health programs and enterprises. This guidebook offers readers a guide for the development of a PPP in pharmacy services through six simple, customizable steps. It looks at pharmacy services as an important component of a well-rounded health care and hospital systems. Through sustainable PPP in pharmacy services, people will have access to safe, effective, and affordable medicines.
