Download or read book Marriage and Inequality in Classless Societies written by Jane Fishburne Collier and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents three ideal-typic models for analyzing inequality in kin-based, non-stratified societies that are commonly described as bands, tribes or ranked societies (but not chiefdoms). Each model discusses the organization of inequality associated with a particular way of validating marriages. The book is a serious and complex attempt to understand the bases and dynamics of inequality in classless societies. It offers a sophisticated argument for the position that there is a culturally-structured basis for women's universal subordination. An important strength of Collier's theoretical interpretation is that it makes the case for universality of subordination without slipping into biological reductionism.

Download or read book Two Suns of the Southwest written by Nancy Beck Young and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over time the presidential election of 1964 has come to be seen as a generational shift, a defining moment in which Americans deliberated between two distinctly different visions for the future. In its juxtaposition of these divergent visions, Two Suns of the Southwest is the first full account of this critical election and its legacy for US politics. The 1964 election, in Nancy Beck Young’s telling, was a contest between two men of the Southwest, each with a very different idea of what the Southwest was and what America should be. Barry Goldwater, the Republican senator from Arizona, came to represent a nostalgic, idealized past, a preservation of traditional order, while Lyndon B. Johnson, the Democratic incumbent from Texas, looked boldly and hopefully toward an expansive, liberal future of increased opportunity. Thus, as we see in Two Suns of the Southwest, the election was also a showdown between liberalism and conservatism, an election whose outcome would echo throughout the rest of the century. Young explores how demographics, namely the rise of the Sunbelt, factored into the framing and reception of these competing ideas. Her work situates Johnson’s Sunbelt liberalism as universalist, designed to create space for all Americans; Goldwater’s Sunbelt conservatism was far more restrictive, at least with regard to what the federal government should do. In this respect the election became a debate about individual rights versus legislated equality as priorities of the federal government. Young explores all the cultural and political elements and events that figured in this narrative, allowing Johnson to unite disaffected Republicans with independents and Democrats in a winning coalition. On a final note Young connects the 1964 election to the current state of our democracy, explaining the irony whereby the winning candidate’s vision has grown stale while the losing candidate’s has become much more central to American politics.

Download or read book The World of T pac Amaru written by Ward Stavig and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equally concerned with the lives of ordinary Andean people and sweeping historical processes, this book unveils a complex colonial world of indigenous villagers and their Spanish neighbors from the ground up and in the process examines one of the most significant indigenous uprisings in the Americas. This rebellion, known by the name of its leader, T£pac Amaru, ignited in colonial Cuzco near the former Inca capital during the late eighteenth century (1780?83) and spread rapidly throughout much of the Andes. Led by the descendant of the last Inca ruler, the rebellion severely disrupted the colonial economy and proved to be the most serious challenge to Spanish authority in Latin America since the sixteenth century. Focusing on the Cuzco provinces of Quispicanchis and Canas y Canchis, which were the wellspring of the rebellion, Ward Stavig examines the issues, values, and themes central to the lives of ordinary Andean women and men?senses of identity, conceptions of sexuality and gender, the threat of crime, the value placed on work, competition for land and its relation to cultural identity, and the impact of forced labor. Stavig interweaves an intimate and richly textured portrait of the lives of Native villagers with an analysis of economic and political colonial institutions to show not only how Native peoples in Cuzco made sense of their lives but also how their strategies of survival shaped colonial society.

Download or read book The Pagan in the Pulpit written by D. S. Carroll and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-02-21 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pagan in the Pulpit pits a gifted atheist against a formidable fundamentalist. The prize for which they mount an epic battle is the atheists wife, a captivating but elusive woman driven toward rebellion by her husbands lack of faith. Rob Fairly is the atheist filled with passion for his wife and virtuoso talents as a writer. Todd Holyfield (also known as Todd Almighty) is the madly smitten pastor who pursues the enigmatic wife. The wife is Lisa Fairly, who considers him the perfect pastor to replace the saintly but monotonous sermonizer fired from her church. As Lisa grows more hypnotized with Todd, her husband has his own temptations. One of them is Kim, an irresistible Confucian, and the other one is Valerie, an inspiring Wiccan. Blending satire with a search for deeper faith, The Pagan in the Pulpit trains a laser-like psychology on fundamentalism. Aiming at a rampant problem in America and worldwide, Rob uses his ingenious talents to oppose the pastors fundamentalism and prevent his wifes seduction. Showing greater sympathy than her husband, Lisa finds a wiser tolerance than she expected in her search for faith while battling with herself, her husband, and her pastor to preserve her marriage. Rich in wit and irony, elegant style, and searing love, the novel makes the battle of its central characters a microcosm of our modern world. In summary, The Pagan in the Pulpit uses its irreverence to honor faith while freeing what we love from fundamentalism and seduction.
Download or read book Poor Gal written by Dan Gutstein and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poor Gal: The Cultural History of Little Liza Jane chronicles the origins and evolution of a folk tune beloved by millions worldwide. Dan Gutstein delves into the trajectory of the “Liza Jane” family of songs, including the most popular variant “Li’l Liza Jane.” Likely originating among enslaved people on southern plantations, the songs are still performed and recorded centuries later. Evidence for these tunes as part of the repertoire of enslaved people comes from the Works Progress Administration ex-slave narratives that detail a range of lyrics and performance rituals related to “Liza Jane.” Civil War soldiers and minstrel troupes eventually adopted certain variants, including “Goodbye Liza Jane.” This version of the song prospered in the racist environment of burnt cork minstrelsy. Other familiar variants, such as “Little Liza Jane,” likely remained fixed in folk tradition until early twentieth-century sheet music popularized the melody. New genres and a slate of stellar performers broadly adopted these folk songs, bringing the tunes to far-reaching listeners. In 1960, to an audience of more than thirty million viewers, Harry Belafonte performed “Little Liza Jane” on CBS. The song was featured on such popular radio shows as Fibber McGee & Molly; films such as Coquette; and a Mickey Mouse animation. Hundreds of recognizable performers—including Fats Domino, Bing Crosby, Nina Simone, Mississippi John Hurt, and Pete Seeger—embraced the “Liza Jane” family. David Bowie even released “Liza Jane” as his first single. Gutstein documents these famous renditions, as well as lesser-known characters integral to the song’s history. Drawing upon a host of cultural insights from experts—including Eileen Southern, Carl Sandburg, Thomas Talley, LeRoi Jones/Amiri Baraka, Charles Wolfe, Langston Hughes, and Alan Lomax—Gutstein charts the cross-cultural implications of a voyage unlike any other in the history of American folk music.
