This book was released on 2013-12-18 with total page 1596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basis for this additional volume are the three volumes of the handbooks Dictionaries. An International Encyclopedia of Lexicography (HSK 5.1–5.3), published between 1989 and 1991. An updating has been perceived as an important desideratum for a considerable time. In the present Supplementary Volume the premises and subjects of HSK 5.1–5.3 are complemented by new articles that take account of the practice-internal and theoretical developments of the last 15 years. Special attention has been given to the following topics: the status and function of lexicographic reference works, the history of lexicography, the theory of lexicography, lexicographic processes, lexicographic training and lexicographic institutions, new metalexicographic methods, electronic and, especially, computer-assisted lexicography.

Download or read book Translating Nature Terminology written by Wojtek Kasprzak and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translating Nature Terminology hopes to fill a vacuum in the market, combining practical advice for translators with aspects of linguistics and natural sciences. It is a response to the growing popularity of bilingual (Polish-English) publications on nature in Poland, which, however, abound in mistranslated nature terminology. Using cognitivism-based analysis, it traces the vagaries of categorisation of the natural world within one language as well as interlingually, with a view to helping translators find suitable equivalents of concepts and terms representing them. Translators can learn, for instance, when overspecification, underspecification or domestication are justified and when they become a translation error, what to do with the names of cultivars, or in what context one should render turzycowisko as “tall sedge swamp” and where as “sedge fen.” The book also demonstrates that terminological correctness is not only a must for informative texts but it is often indispensable to ensure the coherence of literary works. It pays particular attention to the penetration of folk terms into specialist texts and vice versa. The reliability of dictionaries, both general and specialist, is called into question and keeping in touch with up-to-date professional sources is recommended instead. All the above claims are thoroughly researched and amply exemplified.
Download or read book Dictionary Visions Research and Practice written by Henrik Gottlieb and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-12-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about dictionaries and dictionary making. In six thematic sections it presents nineteen contributions covering a wide field within lexicography: Online Lexicography, Dictionary Structure, Phraseology in Dictionaries, LSP Lexicography, Dictionaries and the User, plus Etymology, History and Culture in Lexicography. Some chapters focus on theoretical aspects, others report on dictionary work in the making, and still others compare and analyze existing dictionaries. Common to all authors, however, is the concern for the dictionary user. Trivial as it may seem, the fact that dictionaries are meant to fulfill the needs of specific user groups has only recently achieved widespread recognition in the lexicographical literature. This volume shows the many ramifications of this functional approach to lexicography by presenting twenty-two authors representing the state of the art in eleven countries: Canada, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Iceland, Israel, Latvia, The Netherlands, Poland, South Africa and Spain.

This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores scholarly challenges within the fields of Anglophone language, literature, and culture. The section focusing on language details issues falling within two areas: namely, language contact and the language-culture relationship, and stylistic and syntactic perspectives on the English language. The literature part investigates twentieth-century American, English, and Australian literature, dealing with both poetry and prose and discussing topics of identity, gender, metafiction, postmodern conditions, and other relevant theoretical issues in contemporary literature. The culture part treats theoretical approaches in cultural studies that are vital in today’s cultural context, especially in Central European universities, the Irish language and culture, and contemporary cultural phenomena inspired by the growing ubiquity of technological intrusions into various fields of cultural production.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translation is a phenomenon that affects us all on a daily basis, the more so now that dissemination of information is greatly enhanced by modern technology. However, there are no strict regulations on who can become a translator and what qualifications are required. The contributors to this volume strive to find out whether translators are taught, self-taught or trained, what the teaching or training programmes are like and how they can be improved. This is a companion volume to Teaching Translation and Interpreting: Challenges and Practices (edited by Łukasz Bogucki, Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2010). It contains papers delivered at two international conferences devoted to teaching translation and interpreting, organised in Łódź, Poland, as well as invited contributions. The authors are translation and interpreting scholars and teachers from leading Polish and Ukrainian universities.
