Book Modern German Grammar

Download or read book Modern German Grammar written by Ruth Whittle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern German Grammar: A Practical Guide, Third Edition is an innovative reference guide to German, combining traditional and function-based grammar in a single volume. The Grammar is divided into two parts. Part A covers grammatical categories such as word order, nouns, verbs and adjectives. Part B is organised according to language functions and notions such as: making introductions asking for something to be done delivering a speech possibility satisfaction. The book addresses learners’ practical needs and presents grammar in both a traditional and a communicative setting. New to this edition, and building on feedback from the previous edition: The rules of the latest (and so far final) spelling reform have been implemented throughout. Examples of usage have been updated and consideration given to Swiss and Austrian variants. The chapter on register has been expanded and now includes youth language and frequently used Anglicisms in German. The Index now has even more key words; it has also been redesigned to differentiate between German words, grammar terms, and functions, thus making it more user-friendly. The Grammar assumes no previous grammatical training and is intended for all those who have a basic knowledge of German, from intermediate learners in schools and adult education to undergraduates taking German as a major or minor part of their studies. The Grammar is accompanied by a third edition of Modern German Grammar Workbook (ISBN 978-0-415-56725-1) which features exercises and activities directly linked to the Grammar. Ruth Whittle is Lecturer, John Klapper is Professor of Foreign Language Pedagogy, Katharina Glöckel is the Austrian Lektorin and Bill Dodd is Professor of Modern German Studies – all at the University of Birmingham. Christine Eckhard-Black is Tutor and Advisor in German at the Oxford University Language Centre.

Book excerpt: Crazy in Berlin is the first volume in the saga of Carlo Reinhart. As an army medic stationed in Allied-occupied Germany, Reinhart is a young man of large bulk (two hundred pounds, plus)—good-hearted, intelligent, and something of a fool. He pursues with anxiety and bewilderment his custodial role over a shattered and noxious civilization, accompanied by an assortment of influences: Nathan Schild, an American Communist acting as a U.S. intelligence office; the war waif Trudchen, an accommodating Heidi; Schatzi, a charter-member Nazi, now a Russian courier and black market virtuoso. Crazy in Berlin is a lusty tale, full of irony and wit, of a stumbling American Odysseus. Praise for Crazy In Berlin “Thomas Berger is a name to remember. . . . A novelist with a great career before him.”—Harvey Swados, The New Leader “One of the best war novels, and one of our best novels no matter what kind.”—W.G. Rogers, Associated Press “An ambitious mixture of high moral earnestness and knock-about farce.”—Pearl Bell, Commentary

Book Diminutives across Languages Theoretical Frameworks and Linguistic Domains

Download or read book Diminutives across Languages Theoretical Frameworks and Linguistic Domains written by Stela Manova and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses a number of issues in current morphological theory from the point of view of diminutive formation, such as the role of phonology in diminutives and hypocoristics and consequently its place in the overall architecture of grammar, i.e. phonology-first versus syntax/morphology-first theoretical analyses, diminutives in the L1 acquisition of typologically diverse languages, and the borrowing of non-diminutive morphology for the expression of diminutive meanings, among others. Among the peculiarities of diminutive morphology discussed are the relation between diminutives and mass nouns, the avoidance of diminutives in plural contexts in some languages, and the relatively frequent semantic bleaching and reanalysis of diminutive forms cross-linguistically. Special attention is paid to the debate on the head versus modifier status of diminutive affixes (corresponding to high versus low diminutives in alternative analyses), with data from spoken and sign languages. Overall, the volume addresses a number of topics that will be of interest to scholars of almost all linguistic subfields and per

Book Aristoteles Metaphysik Nikomachische Ethik Das Organon Die Physik Die Dichtkunst

Download or read book Aristoteles Metaphysik Nikomachische Ethik Das Organon Die Physik Die Dichtkunst written by Aristoteles and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-06-21 with total page 2019 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
