Book excerpt: Widow of Que-Moy weaves the romance and tragedy of two young lovers on Que-Moy, an island adjacent to Mainland China, during the tumultuous confrontations between Chiang Kai-Sheks nationalist regime and Chairman Maos revolutionaries. Draped with the exotic Chinese culture, this romantic and passionate tale will entice you from the very beginning, while offering a concise account of this often neglected chapter in world history. The fluid writing style of the author will keep you turning the pages of this historical drama, as plots of political treachery, sabotage on the open seas, a merciless attack on a defenseless island, and a daring commando raid provides the dramatic finale.

Download or read book Living the Enlightenment written by Margaret C. Jacob and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991-12-26 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long recognized as more than the writings of a dozen or so philosophes, the Enlightenment created a new secular culture populated by the literate and the affluent. Enamoured of British institutions, Continental Europeans turned to the imported masonic lodges and found in them a new forum that was constitutionally constructed and logically egalitarian. Originating in the Middle Ages, when stone-masons joined together to preserve their professional secrets and to protect their wages, the English and Scottish lodges had by the eighteenth century discarded their guild origins and become an international phenomenon that gave men and eventually some women a place to vote, speak, discuss and debate. Margaret Jacob argues that the hundreds of masonic lodges founded in eighteenth-century Europe were among the most important enclaves in which modern civil society was formed. In France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Britain men and women freemasons sought to create a moral and social order based upon reason and virtue, and dedicated to the principles of liberty and equality. A forum where philosophers met with men of commerce, government, and the professions, the masonic lodge created new forms of self-government in microcosm, complete with constitutions and laws, elections, and representatives. This is the first comprehensive history of Enlightenment freemasonry, from the roots of the society's political philosophy and evolution in seventeenth-century England and Scotland to the French Revolution. Based on never-before-used archival sources, it will appeal to anyone interested in the birth of modernity in Europe or in the cultural milieu of the European Enlightenment.
Download or read book The Encyclopedia of the Chinese Overseas written by Chinese Heritage Center (Singapore) and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of its kind, The Encyclopedia of the Chinese Overseas provides a panoramic and comparative view across past and present overseas Chinese communities world wide. The Chinese diaspora has inherited mainland experiences, and they have modified and enriched them by transplantation to other continents and civilizations. This book includes the most important aspects of these experiences. The volume is geographically and thematically organized. The largest section consists of country-by-country profiles of individual Chinese communities. The rest divides into thematic sections on origins, migration, institutions, ties to China, and interethnic relations. Each of the sections is meant to be read continuously. They are accessible, scholarly, and authoritative. Complex material is clearly and vividly presented in text, boxed features, maps, graphs, tables, and archival and contemporary pictures. Chinese proper names and terms are identified with their characters in a glossary, while full references to Chinese, English, French, Spanish, and Russian works are given in the bibliography.
