Book Door Wide Open

Download or read book Door Wide Open written by Jack Kerouac and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2001-06-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a blind date in Greenwich Village set up by Allen Ginsberg, Joyce Johnson (then Joyce Glassman) met Jack Kerouac in January 1957, nine months before he became famous overnight with the publication of On the Road. She was an adventurous, independent-minded twenty-one-year-old; Kerouac was already running on empty at thirty-five. This unique book, containing the many letters the two of them wrote to each other, reveals a surprisingly tender side of Kerouac. It also shares the vivid and unusual perspective of what it meant to be young, Beat, and a woman in the Cold War fifties. Reflecting on those tumultuous years, Johnson seamlessly interweaves letters and commentary, bringing to life her love affair with one of American letters' most fascinating and enigmatic figures.

Download or read book Wide Open Spaces written by Jim Palmer and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2007-12-02 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jim Palmer's critically acclaimed Divine Nobodies was only half the story - the deconstruction and shedding of a religious mentality that hindered his knowing God. In his next book, Jim takes the reader along into the wide open spaces of exploring and experiencing God beyond religion. Jim writes, "It is no secret that God can be lost beneath the waving banner of religion. Divine Nobodies is my story of how this happened to me. Sometimes you have to disentangle God from religion, even Christ from Christianity, to find the truth. With the help of some unsuspecting nobodies, I uncovered a new starting line with God. As I've put one foot in front of another, I've experienced God in ways that are deeply transforming." Each chapter revolves around a central question related to knowing God on fresh terms: Is God a belief system? Is the Bible a landing strip or launching pad? Can what we're feeling inside be God? Are we too religiously minded to be any earthly good? Brian McLaren wrote, "I am tempted to say that Jim Palmer could well be the next Don Miller, but what they have in common, along with an honest spirituality and extraordinary skill as storytellers, is a unique voice." The Library Reviews said of him, "Jim Palmer's casual, yet compelling writing style cuts through the religious rhetoric and gets to the real issues...readers will love this author! His sense of humor is alternately mixed with shocking sentences and poignant moments. Laced throughout is a refreshing honesty that ties his ideas together with a ribbon of reality...each turn of the page strips away a little more of the contrived mystery of Christianity until the simplicity and sincerity of it stands in realistic splendor." More and more people seek a deeper spirituality beyond status-quo religion. Others are left empty and weary from a shallow and narrow pop-Christianity. Palmer says that God's kingdom of love, peace, and freedom can be a present reality in any person's life. He proclaims that God is indeed in the process of birthing something deep and wide among unlikely people in unconventional ways, which is changing the world...one "nobody" at a time.

Download or read book Mind Wide Open written by Steven Johnson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2004-02-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BRILLIANTLY EXPLORING TODAY'S CUTTING-EDGE BRAIN RESEARCH, MIND WIDE OPEN IS AN UNPRECEDENTED JOURNEY INTO THE ESSENCE OF HUMAN PERSONALITY, ALLOWING READERS TO UNDERSTAND THEMSELVES AND THE PEOPLE IN THEIR LIVES AS NEVER BEFORE. Using a mix of experiential reportage, personal storytelling, and fresh scientific discovery, Steven Johnson describes how the brain works -- its chemicals, structures, and subroutines -- and how these systems connect to the day-to-day realities of individual lives. For a hundred years, he says, many of us have assumed that the most powerful route to self-knowledge took the form of lying on a couch, talking about our childhoods. The possibility entertained in this book is that you can follow another path, in which learning about the brain's mechanics can widen one's self-awareness as powerfully as any therapy or meditation or drug. In Mind Wide Open, Johnson embarks on this path as his own test subject, participating in a battery of attention tests, learning to control video games by altering his brain waves, scanning his own brain with a $2 million fMRI machine, all in search of a modern answer to the oldest of questions: who am I? Along the way, Johnson explores how we "read" other people, how the brain processes frightening events (and how we might rid ourselves of the scars those memories leave), what the neurochemistry is behind love and sex, what it means that our brains are teeming with powerful chemicals closely related to recreational drugs, why music moves us to tears, and where our breakthrough ideas come from. Johnson's clear, engaging explanation of the physical functions of the brain reveals not only the broad strokes of our aptitudes and fears, our skills and weaknesses and desires, but also the momentary brain phenomena that a whole human life comprises. Why, when hearing a tale of woe, do we sometimes smile inappropriately, even if we don't want to? Why are some of us so bad at remembering phone numbers but brilliant at recognizing faces? Why does depression make us feel stupid? To read Mind Wide Open is to rethink family histories, individual fates, and the very nature of the self, and to see that brain science is now personally transformative -- a valuable tool for better relationships and better living.

Book The Open Doors of Satan

Download or read book The Open Doors of Satan written by Bill Vincent and published by RWG Publishing. This book was released on 2022-04-11 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This will be a typical Sunday morning sermon. That was a joke, of course. It ought to be. This title was bestowed upon me by God. When I heard that, I felt a shiver run down my spine. The Open Doors of Satan. We should all be aware that we frequently give way to an open door. We occasionally open something in our lives without even realizing it. To break in, all you need is access, access to something otherworldly. I'm not referring to the supernatural or celestial realms. I'm referring to Satan's supernatural world. When you talk about the supernatural, you're talking about the realm of the unknown. That's not only good, but also bad. Our souls can be accessed through a door. There is a door, and the enemy can enter through it. It makes no difference whether it's merely a crack. All you need is a crack in your door, and he'll be able to come in. Between light and darkness, this door is slightly open. Our adversary is confined to the world of darkness by God's holy decree. He doesn't have access to light. The law will not be changed by the Bible. Jesus triumphed, and that power remains in our midst. Is it necessary for us to know whether or not we can still open the door? I'm sure there are a few of you who are perfect, and because you're so holy, you'll be going to Heaven soon. You've never had anything wrong with you. You never sin, and I know that, but for the rest of us, there is an open door that occasionally appears, and it occurs as a result of something we do. I'm going to discuss a specific aspect of one problem that is linked to a slew of other issues. I know you're going to be excited, so take a deep breath and relax so you can stay focused. We are free of these wicked forces, but if the door is left open, Satan and his henchmen get legal access. Their goal is to keep the places that open the door under control. Because all they need is access, and once they have access, they have legal rights. We have granted the adversary legal rights because we have given them to them. Have you ever felt as if the enemy was deliberately targeting you? Let's face it, I've been there. "You're the one who opened the door," God stated one day. Have you ever received a word from God and then requested a different one? Hallelujah. Access by the enemy invariably leads to death, destruction, and the loss of freedom. It could even be your life on the line. In Matthew 16:18, Jesus refers to these doors as gates. "The gates of hell," he said precisely. Are these the gates of hell? Any Christian should be aware that the adversaries have had access to a large portion of the Body of Christ at times, and the Body of Christ has just shrugged it off as normal. Do you realize there are a lot of folks who don't believe in the demon realm, don't believe in fighting a good faith struggle, yet still attend church? Do you recall what a prophet once told me? "If the enemy isn't stirring things up against you, if he isn't coming for you, then you're on the wrong track," he says. God be praised. Hallelujah. Right now, I can confidently state that I am on the right track. I used to have a good season, but not anymore.

Book Eyes Wide Open

Download or read book Eyes Wide Open written by Isaac Lidsky and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this New York Times bestseller, Isaac Lidsky draws on his experience of achieving immense success, joy, and fulfillment while losing his sight to a blinding disease to show us that it isn’t external circumstances, but how we perceive and respond to them, that governs our reality. Fear has a tendency to give us tunnel vision—we fill the unknown with our worst imaginings and cling to what’s familiar. But when confronted with new challenges, we need to think more broadly and adapt. When Isaac Lidsky learned that he was beginning to go blind at age thirteen, eventually losing his sight entirely by the time he was twenty-five, he initially thought that blindness would mean an end to his early success and his hopes for the future. Paradoxically, losing his sight gave him the vision to take responsibility for his reality and thrive. Lidsky graduated from Harvard College at age nineteen, served as a Supreme Court law clerk, fathered four children, and turned a failing construction subcontractor into a highly profitable business. Whether we’re blind or not, our vision is limited by our past experiences, biases, and emotions. Lidsky shows us how we can overcome paralyzing fears, avoid falling prey to our own assumptions and faulty leaps of logic, silence our inner critic, harness our strength, and live with open hearts and minds. In sharing his hard-won insights, Lidsky shows us how we too can confront life's trials with initiative, humor, and grace.

Book excerpt: In the midst of his stormy years and dark night of the soul, Tav Sparks spontaneously wrote this ihepicle poem, Through Thunder. "Epic" spiritual poems in ancient literature provided experiences intheir times akin to our most profound experiences of film today. Through the poet-director's images, sound, and emotion, the reader or listener might find connection to inspire or affirm both the struggle and the transcendence. "Through Thunder" feels and sounds us through the archetypal Hero's Journey described by Joseph Campbell. It draws the perennial, turbulent, death-rebirth map of psychospiritual awakening, a process experienced by the mystics of all religions, and about which Stanislav Grof has written extensively.
