Book The Little Angel and Other Stories

Download or read book The Little Angel and Other Stories written by Leonid Andreyev and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable collection of short expressionist stories by Russian playwright, novelist, and short-story writer, Leonid Nikolaievich Andreyev, who was considered to be the father of Expressionism in Russian literature. Traces of compassion, beauty, and sympathetic insight are encountered on every page side by side with barbarity and crudeness, the reason being that Andreyev portrays life without hiding, without neglecting any part of it. The Little Angel, and other stories (1916) was of one of his collections that were extensively translated into book form. The plots in these stories are straightforward, the characters are isolated, and the endings are harsh and profound in their sadness. Because of the cumulative descriptions of the strange and the dreadful, Andreyev has been called the Russian Edgar Allan Poe. During the 1914-1929 period, America was eager for anything similar to Edgar Allan Poe. As Poe's Russian equivalent, translations of Andreyev's work found a ready audience in the English-speaking world. This collection contains the following short stories: The Little Angel At the Roadside Station Snapper The Lie An Original Petka at the Bungalow Silence Laughter The Friend In the Basement The City The Marseillaise The Tocsin Bargamot and Garaska Stepping-stones The Spy

Book My Flight Through Cancer

Download or read book My Flight Through Cancer written by Kenny Tipton and published by . This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about more than cancer; it is about letting ego go and sharing life in intimate details. It is about love and passion, about being humbled, making mistakes, finding the right path, relying on others to help in the simplest of tasks, and keeping and finding more faith than you thought possible. The hardest part about cancer or any other debilitating disease is that so many people do not understand what the person is going through during this horrific time. On the outside he or she may look healthy, but people with these diseases are fighting incredible battles on the inside. Be mindful when you come across those who are not well. Show them compassion, show them understanding, and show them any kindness you may have to offer. Leave judgment on the table; regardless of a person's past, no one deserves the pain of loneliness and disease. With the smallest of deeds Can come the largest of trees. A simple word, a simple smile Can help just ONE person finish his mile. Do not ever underestimate a word of encouragement you may give, For you might unknowingly give a gift to live. Ladies and gentlemen, please keep your seat belts fastened, keep your hands inside the ride at all times, your mind engaged, and your eyes on the pages. Hold tight as we are expecting moderate to severe turbulence in the following pages; it is unavoidable. We will have to ride it out until we can find a smoother ride and a soft landing in this flight called life. This is my story, my life, my struggle--my flight through cancer.

Book THE AFTERGLOW OF SUNSET

Download or read book THE AFTERGLOW OF SUNSET written by GAO HUAIFEI and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was that naive boy like humble slope grass or a carefree little fish in the stream in the little mountain village which was isolated from the outside world of civilization then. Then he was suddenly brought into a curious city in the north of China by his father. Everything around him became a wonder and mystery. So he turned to be another silly boy who would like to sit alone by the city street to enjoy the passing automobiles. In a couple of years he learned to fend for himself while his father was out of town because of his work; a real home alone. During the following years of his growing-up, he also witnessed the breathtaking changes of his home nation as well as of his own life. For him happiness was actually ephemeral while emotional suffering had to be recuperated by the elapsing of time. This is what he learned from his experience: Never to be afraid of being shrouded in the darkness! He was always fascinated by the brilliant and mysterious clouds that were aflame in the sunset. Why? Because there would always be new hope beyond the afterglow of sunset.

Book The English Department

Download or read book The English Department written by W. Ross Winterowd and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand the history of "English", W. Ross Winterowd insists, one must understand how literary studies, composition-rhetoric studies, and influential textbooks interrelate. Stressing the interrelationship among these three forces, Winterowd presents a history of English studies in the university since the Enlightenment. Winterowd's history is unique in three ways. First, it tells the whole story of English studies: it does not separate the history of literary studies from that of composition-rhetoric studies, nor can it if it is going to be an authentic history. Second, it traces the massive influence on English studies exerted by textbooks such as Adventures in Literature, Understanding Poetry, English in Action, and the Harbrace College Handbook. Finally, Winterowd himself is very much a part of the story, a partisan with more than forty years of service to the discipline, not simply a disinterested scholar searching for the truth. After demonstrating that literary studies and literary scholars are products of Romantic epistemology and values, Winterowd further invites controversy by reinterpreting the Romantic legacy inherited by English departments. His reinterpretation of major literary figures and theory, too, invites discussion, possibly argument. And by directly contradicting current histories of composition-rhetoric that allow for no points of contact with literature, Winterowd intensifies the argument by explaining the development of composition-rhetoric from the standpoint of literature and literary theory. Winterowd has produced a work of belles lettres that is both scholarly and autobiographical, a work unique in English department literature.
