Book Novelistic Inquiries into the Mind

    Book Details:
  • Author : Grzegorz Maziarczyk
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2016-09-23
  • ISBN : 1443814091
  • Pages : 205 pages

Download or read book Novelistic Inquiries into the Mind written by Grzegorz Maziarczyk and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novelistic Inquiries into the Mind traces the multiple relations between the mind and the contemporary novel. The contributors here examine various types of narrative fiction, ranging from the postmodern novels of J. M. Coetzee and Ian McEwan through the experimental prose of Leslie Scalapino to the popular fiction of James Dashner and Christopher Moore. On the one hand, they investigate novelistic representations of various mind-related issues, including different states of consciousness, Alzheimer’s disease, thought experiments and formation of the self. On the other, by analysing and evaluating in these contexts such narrative devices as unreliable narration, development of conceptual networks or multimodal integration of verbal and non-verbal semiotic resources, they exemplify the multiplicity of techniques whereby the novel can explore the intricacies of mental processes. Taken together, the essays collected here demonstrate the potential of the novel as genre for representing the mind. In its exploration of the problems involved in the linguistic construction of reality, the cognitive function of art and the uncertain status of consciousness, the contemporary novel thus reflects the mind’s urge to understand itself, as well as possible meanings of its own perceptions, creations and projections.

Book Fragments of an Infinite Memory

Download or read book Fragments of an Infinite Memory written by Maël Renouard and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deeply informed, yet playful and ironic look at how the internet has changed human experience, memory, and our sense of self, and that belongs on the shelf with the best writings of Roland Barthes and Jean Baudrillard. “One day, as I was daydreaming on the boulevard Beaumarchais, I had the idea—it came and went in a flash, almost in spite of myself—of Googling to find out what I’d been up to and where I’d been two evenings before, at five o’clock, since I couldn’t remember on my own.” So begins Maël Renouard’s Fragments of an Infinite Memory, a provocative and elegant inquiry into life in a wireless world. Renouard is old enough to remember life before the internet but young enough to have fully accommodated his life to the internet and the gadgets that support it. Here this young philosopher, novelist, and translator tries out a series of conjectures on how human experience, especially the sense of self, is being changed by our continual engagement with a memory that is impersonal and effectively boundless. Renouard has written a book that is rigorously impressionistic, deeply informed historically and culturally, but is also playful, ironic, personal, and formally adventurous, a book that withstands comparison to the best of Roland Barthes and Jean Baudrillard.

She would be hired, that is, if her mentor hadn’t thrown her out before she could earn her license. Now her only hope of steady work is to find a Patron—a rich, well-connected individual who will vouch for her abilities. When a handsome young heir named Magnus Rorschach reaches out to hire her, she takes the job without question. Never mind that he’s rude and demanding and eccentric, that the contract comes with a number of outlandish rules... and that almost a dozen debtera had quit before her. If Andromeda wants to earn a living, she has no choice. But she quickly realizes this is a job like no other, with horrifying manifestations at every turn, and that Magnus is hiding far more than she has been trained for. Death is the most likely outcome if she stays, the reason every debtera before her quit. But leaving Magnus to live out his curse alone isn’t an option because—heaven help her—she’s fallen for him. "Fierce, eerie and heartfelt... a romantic and spine-chilling reimagining of a classic. I loved every creepy, swoon-worthy moment of it." - Laura E. Weymouth, author of The Light Between Worlds

  • Pages : 692 pages

Download or read book Spinning Wheels written by Frank Buxton and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-08-23 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story opens in the early nineteen sixties, at a fictional isolated Catholic Convent in North Wales. Devout Christians, and Catholics in particular, will find this book to be a very challenging read. At appropriate points, the debilitating effect of loneliness is sympathetically portrayed, and an argument against committing suicide is also presented. As the story gently unfolds, the foundations, arrogant tribal marking and the power, of all organised religions, are considered. Calmly and peacefully then, 'love Thy neighbour as Thyself' is happily acknowledged as the only sensible way of ensuring the survival of the Human Race. Weaving around this main theme are several honest, decent, if rather robust, love stories. These quickly lead to discussion and consideration of further ideas; about life and death, good and evil, order and chaos. Kirkus reviews: - An engaging tale. The story is strong and the erotica is nicely balanced by the humanity of the characters.
