Book excerpt: Somewhere along the way, our culture lost its definition of manhood, leaving generations of men and men-to-be confused about their roles, responsibilities, relationships, and the reason God made them men. It's into this "no man's land" that New York Times bestselling author Mark Batterson declares his mantra for manhood: play the man. In this inspiring call to something greater, he helps men understand what it means to be a man of God by unveiling seven virtues of manhood. Mark shares inspiring stories of manhood, including the true story of the hero and martyr Polycarp, who first heard the voice from heaven say, "Play the man." Mark couples those stories with practical ideas about how to disciple the next generation of men. This is more than a book; it's a movement of men who will settle for nothing less than fulfilling their highest calling to be the man and the father God has destined them to be. Play the man. Make the man.

Ideal for anyone with a general interest in new atheism, for those studying religion, or wanting to sort out what (if any) elements of their idea of God are man-made.

Book How to Read the Bible

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marc Zvi Brettler
  • Publisher : Jewish Publication Society
  • Release : 2010-01-01
  • ISBN : 0827610017
  • Pages : 401 pages

Download or read book How to Read the Bible written by Marc Zvi Brettler and published by Jewish Publication Society. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master Bible scholar and teacher Marc Brettler argues that today's contemporary readers can only understand the ancient Hebrew Scripture by knowing more about the culture that produced it. And so Brettler unpacks the literary conventions, ideological assumptions, and historical conditions that inform the biblical text and demonstrates how modern critical scholarship and archaeological discoveries shed light on this fascinating and complex literature. Brettler surveys representative biblical texts from different genres to illustrate how modern scholars have taught us to "read" these texts. Using the "historical-critical method" long popular in academia, he guides us in reading the Bible as it was read in the biblical period, independent of later religious norms and interpretive traditions. Understanding the Bible this way lets us appreciate it as an interesting text that speaks in multiple voices on profound issues. This book is the first "Jewishly sensitive" introduction to the historical-critical method. Unlike other introductory texts, the Bible that this book speaks about is the Jewish one -- with the three-part TaNaKH arrangement, the sequence of books found in modern printed Hebrew editions, and the chapter and verse enumerations used in most modern Jewish versions of the Bible. In an afterword, the author discusses how the historical-critical method can help contemporary Jews relate to the Bible as a religious text in a more meaningful way.

Book God Created Man in His Image and Likeness

Download or read book God Created Man in His Image and Likeness written by Oried E. Graves and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone who reads the Bible must admit that it tells us to do things that we never have done and cannot do in our fleshly bodies. One reason is that God our Creator is telling us what He wants us to be and do as created in His image and likeness. Our purpose is in our image and likeness of God our Creator, not like the dust of the ground or the flesh of our parents. Most children don’t know that they are created in the image and likeness of God, and their parents have not asked God for His spirit for their children so they can be taught this vital truth. The reason parents don’t ask God for His spirit for their children is because they don’t recognize the need for Him. There are several things mankind cannot do in the flesh, and they must recognize their origin in the image and likeness of God. Mankind must recognize being in the image and likeness of God to, first, love God with all their being and love his neighbors as himself; second, to obey God and his parents as required in God’s word; third, to trust God with all his heart; fourth, to worship God in spirit and in truth; and fifth, to glorify God in his body and spirit, which are God. The devil does not want mankind to know that he is created in the image and likeness of God because man will always defeat Satan and fulfill God's will.

Book Don t Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table

Download or read book Don t Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table written by Louie Giglio and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louie Giglio helps you find encouragement, hope, and strength in the midst of any valley as you reject the enemy voices of fear, rage, lust, insecurity, anxiety, despair, temptation, or defeat. Scripture is clear: the Enemy is a liar who will stop at nothing to tempt you into poor decisions and self-defeating mindsets, making you feel afraid, angry, anxious, or defeated. It is all too easy for Satan to weasel his way into a seat at the table intended for only you and your King. But you can fight back. Don't Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table outlines the ways to overcome those lies so you can find peace and security in any challenging circumstance or situation. With the same bold, exciting approach to Scripture as employed in Goliath Must Fall and his other previous works, pastor Louie Giglio examines Psalm 23 in fresh ways, highlighting verse 5: "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies." You can find freedom from insecurity, temptation, and defeat--if you allow Jesus, the Shepherd, to lead the battle for your mind and heart. This spiritual warfare book for those who are leery of spiritual warfare books will resonate with Louie's core Passion tribe as well as with Christians of all ages who want to live a triumphant life in God.

Sproul, in this classic work, puts the holiness of God in its proper and central place in the Christian life. He paints an awe-inspiring vision of God that encourages Christian to become holy just as God is holy. Once you encounter the holiness of God, your life will never be the same.

Book Why Was Man Created

Download or read book Why Was Man Created written by Sam Oputa and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the beginning, God created the earth, and He looked upon it in His cosmic loneliness. And God said, "Let Us make living creatures out of mud, so the mud can see what We have done." And God created every living creature that now moveth, and one was man. Mud as man alone could speak. God leaned close to mud as man sat up, looked around, and spoke. Man blinked. "What is the purpose of all this?" he asked politely. "Everything must have a purpose?" asked God. "Certainly," said man. "Then I leave it to you to think of one for all this," said God. And He went away." -Kurt Vonnegut, Cat's Cradle Most people must have at one point or another asked themselves the question, why am I here? One thing is certain--we were not here from the beginning. Some have asked questions like "What is life all about?" Many others have wondered "What is the nature of life?" and "What is the nature of reality?". These questions can be a passing thought that launches into a full-on existential exploration. What are we anyway? We are born. We grow into adults and before you can bat an eyelid, you are in the old people's home waiting to die. How fulfilling is that? Do you now wonder why some people ask the question "What are we here for anyway?" Some great people have asked these questions. "What is my purpose?" It is a difficult and profound question, and a common conclusion is that we were created for God's glory. That may be a religious truth but is it logical? There must be a far more specific reason for our creation. In Sam Oputa's Why Was Man Created? he explores this question from many angles--spirituality, religion, psychology, philosophy, and other sciences--but mostly he draws from the Holy Books, which contain a wealth of scientific evidence. The result of years of research and soul-searching Why Was Man Created? is a fascinating and sometimes controversial study of the age-old question of creation and evolution. The answers to these questions are not easy to resolve but the answers are out there.

Book Why God Created Man

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Fish
  • Publisher : Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2016-06-08
  • ISBN : 1681974010
  • Pages : 76 pages

Download or read book Why God Created Man written by James Fish and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-06-08 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why God Created Mankind" was inspired by the author's studying and understanding of the Bible. This leads to learning that "God is too loving to be unkind." One scripture states, "Broad is the way that leads to destruction and many there will be that. Go in there at, and narrow is the way that leads to life eternal and there will be few that find it. " The author felt if God knows all things, why would he create mankind, knowing the majority would be lost? He personally believes that it was unkind, unless he had a superior plan for man. With a lifetime of gathering information of God's love and kindness for redemption, he has concluded that this book is a reflection of God's plan for mankind. When you read this book, it is so important to grasp the depth of it. You need to reach down in your spirit and soul to understand that your spirit will live on forever. Reach deeper than just the surface. All of my scripture references are taken from the King James Version of the Bible.
