Book Why UToledo a Study of the Key Factors Influencing the College Choice of International Undergraduate Students and Their Decision to Enroll at The University of Toledo

Download or read book Why UToledo a Study of the Key Factors Influencing the College Choice of International Undergraduate Students and Their Decision to Enroll at The University of Toledo written by Evgeniya Katsanos and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the benefits associated with the internationalization of higher education, multiple universities, states, and countries have made it a strategic imperative to attract international students "in pursuit of development, growth, and sustainability" (Ross et al., 2013, p. 219). Despite the growing numbers of internationally mobile tertiary students, and of international students coming to the U.S. to pursue their higher education, researchers concur that we still know very little about the college choice process of international students. The purpose of the study was to identify the factors affecting international undergraduate students' process of college selection at the information gathering stage, as well as the factors that influence their ultimate decision to enroll at a particular higher education institution. The main findings of this study align with the existing research on the college choice process. They suggest that the selection of a higher education institution is similar to purchasing a high-involvement, high-investment, and high-risk service and represents a complex, multi-stage process that with various factors influencing students' decisions at its every step. International prospective students face an even greater challenge as they are deciding on the destination country of their school as well. Researchers have identified a relatively consistent set of institutional characteristics that affects students' college choice: institutional rankings and reputation, availability of desired course, program reputation, costs of attendance, facilities, and location, to name a few (Hemsley-Brown & Oplatka, 2015; Ortiz, 2015; Han, 2014; Obermeit, 2012; Rudd et al., 2012; Szekeres, 2010). This study confirmed that, depending on individual students' characteristics, such as country of origin, source of funding and program of study, various groups of prospective international undergraduate students experience different influences and are affected by different factors as they inquire about, research, and evaluate their college options. However, cost of study, program availability, and country of origin emerged as the underlining factors in international student college selection. The results of this study point out to the feasibility of student segmentation for effective marketing of higher education institutions based on various qualities relevant to different student populations (Han, 2014; Hobsons, 2014; Choudaha et al., 2012). In addition, the present study highlights the importance of broader internationalization efforts of colleges and universities, namely exchange programs and partnerships, in increasing institutional reputation and visibility, which, in turn, are seen as the main sources for attracting more international students to their campuses.

Book Understanding International Students from Asia in American Universities

Download or read book Understanding International Students from Asia in American Universities written by Yingyi Ma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about international students from Asia studying at American universities in the age of globalization. It explores significant questions, such as: Why do they want to study in America? How do they make their college choices? To what extent do they integrate with domestic students, and what are the barriers for intergroup friendship? How do faculty and administrators at American institutions respond to changing campus and classroom dynamics with a growing student body from Asia? Have we provided them with the skills they need to succeed professionally? As they are preparing to become the educational, managerial and entrepreneurial elites of the world, do Asian international students plan to stay in the U.S. or return to their home country? Asian students constitute over 70 percent of all international students. Almost every major American university now faces unprecedented enrollment growth from Asian students. However, American universities rarely consider if they truly understand the experiences and needs of these students. This book argues that American universities need to learn about their Asian international students to be able to learn from them. It challenges the traditional framework that emphasizes adjustment and adaptation on the part of international students. It argues for the urgency to shift from this framework to the one calling for proactive institutional efforts to bring about successful experiences of international students.

Book Factors Influencing Students Choice to Study Abroad at an Open access Institution

Download or read book Factors Influencing Students Choice to Study Abroad at an Open access Institution written by Cele Nichelle Blair and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This action research study examined factors influencing students' choice to study abroad at "Atlanta-Based College" (ABC), an access institution wishing to increase study-abroad opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. Many scholars and practitioners view the national initiative to advance study abroad as an important contributor to graduating globalized citizens. However, only a small percentage of students take advantage of such opportunities0́4at ABC and at access institutions in general. Therefore, this case study examined students' decision-making process using the Collapsed Perna integrated model of student choice as a framework. A multi-functional action research group was selected to implement the action research project and address the following primary research questions: (1) What does an access institution learn about the study-abroad decision-making process using the Collapsed Perna integrated model of student choice as a framework? (2) How does an action research project centering on study abroad in an access institution advance practice and theory at the individual, group, and system levels? The study showed that the higher education context of layer 2/3 of the Perna model was highly influential in the student-choice process. This suggest that the predominant issue preventing open-access college students from studying abroad is not student interest. Rather, it is the lack of institutionalization of study abroad. Open-access institutions ought to consider shifting their focus from student barriers to institutional barriers. This study also exemplifies the use of action research to address a systemic problem at an open-access institution.

Book Absence of Decision

Download or read book Absence of Decision written by Craufurd D. Goodwin and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policy issues concerning foreign students that affect decision makers of U.S. colleges and universities were studied, along with the views of institutional representatives concerning the presence of foreign students, problems areas they perceive, and the formation and implementation of policy regarding these students. Attention was focused on three states: Florida, Ohio, and California, as well as two institutions in other states that are greatly involved in international programs: Columbia University and Michigan State University. In addition to the college staff and students, opinions were solicited from college trustees, state legislators, and aides to governors. The following policy issues were covered: the survival of certain fields of study in the United States; foreign students as "filler"; the export of higher education services; benefits to the local, state, and national economy; the special costs of foreign students; cost-benefit pricing of foreign student education; and the foreign student cash-flow issue. Arguments for careful inquiry by the institution into the question of foreign students, and implications for institutional organization are briefly considered. Issues that especially call for national attention regarding economic, socio-organizational, and educational areas are also addressed. A list of positions of interviewees by state and institution is appended. (SW)

Book Students in a Global Village

Download or read book Students in a Global Village written by Beverly Diane Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education today operates in a globalized environment. Within this setting, study abroad has been designated by the federal government as an educational tool to promote national security, U.S. leadership and active engagement in the international community. Roughly over 190,000 American students went abroad in 2003-2004. The 2005 Lincoln Commission report recommended that the U.S. send one million students abroad annually by 2017. This lofty goal will be difficult to obtain without having more comprehensive data on why and how students choose to study abroad. The purpose of this study was to explore undergraduate student decision-making, expectation of and experience in study abroad. Factors that influence decision-making as well as expectations and on-site experiences were examined. The researcher drew from students participating in the Commerce School of Business International Programs at Respected State University as the sample, using a college choice theoretical framework built on years of previous research on the tactics of college-bound students and the college student experience. The researcher utilized qualitative research methods relying on interviews of the participants. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and then coded. The data was member-checked and peer reviewed for validity. Surveys were employed to bolster interview data and to add reliability. The Anderson Model of Study Abroad Choice and Model of Study Abroad Student Expectations provide two frameworks for how students make decisions and what they expect when studying abroad. Critical factors for these models included: travel and location, educational attainment, aspirations, background, cultural exposure, personal growth, language development, financial variables, social environment, and institutional climate and characteristics. The study also revealed that study abroad experience can be explained using Terenzini and Reason's (2005) college experience model. The study contributes to the field of international education, academic affairs and student affairs by filling a large gap that exists in research on American students abroad. By examining the nexus between choice, expectation and experience in study abroad, the study provides rich data that can help to improve study abroad programming.

Book International Students and Choice

Download or read book International Students and Choice written by Smriti Panda and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many U.S. higher educational institutions have suffered budget cuts. In many cases, this has matriculated down to the admissions offices, resulting in reduced recruitment and marketing budgets. With reduction in recruitment budgets and a decrease in student enrollments, combined with growing competition for students, institutions are looking towards the international student market to help make up the difference in student enrollments. To increase the enrollment of international students, institutions need to understand how international students choose their destination of study and what factors influence the decision. This information will help to improve and enhance the university0́9s marketing and recruitment strategies. Using the Push-Pull Theory, this research seeks to understand 0́8if0́9 and 0́8how0́9 institutional communications from the university influenced the decision making process of international students at this Public Urban University (PUU), during their selection for the destination of study.

Book Exploring More Signature Pedagogies

Download or read book Exploring More Signature Pedagogies written by Nancy L. Chick and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is distinctive about the ways specific disciplines are traditionally taught, and what kinds of learning do they promote? Do they inspire the habits of the discipline itself, or do they inadvertently contradict or ignore those disciplines? By analyzing assumptions about often unexamined teaching practices, their history, and relevance in contemporary learning contexts, this book offers teachers a fresh way to both think about their impact on students and explore more effective ways to engage students in authentic habits and practices. This companion volume to Exploring Signature Pedagogies covers disciplines not addressed in the earlier volume and further expands the scope of inquiry by interrogating the teaching methods in interdisciplinary fields and a number of professions, critically returning to Lee S. Shulman’s origins of the concept of signature pedagogies. This volume also differs from the first by including authors from across the United States, as well as Ireland and Australia. The first section examines the signature pedagogies in the humanities and fine arts fields of philosophy, foreign language instruction, communication, art and design, and arts entrepreneurship. The second section describes signature pedagogies in the social and natural sciences: political science, economics, and chemistry. Section three highlights the interdisciplinary fields of Ignatian pedagogy, women’s studies, and disability studies; and the book concludes with four chapters on professional pedagogies – nursing, occupational therapy, social work, and teacher education – that illustrate how these pedagogies change as the social context changes, as their knowledge base expands, or as online delivery of instruction increases.
