Book Walking in the Wilderness

Download or read book Walking in the Wilderness written by Beth A. Richardson and published by Upper Room Books. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People of faith are struggling these days as they watch unbelievable events unfold. The United States, once a refuge for immigrants, has closed its borders to many of the world's most vulnerable citizens. Fear of people different from us has created an atmosphere of hatred, incivility, and violence. We are living in a time of wilderness and exile. Yet the wilderness is a familiar place for those who follow Jesus. Like Jesus, we spend 40 days in the wilderness. During Lent God calls us to examine ourselves, repent, and make room in our lives for the Holy One. Walking in the Wilderness is meant to be a companion for readers' journey through Lent. It may be studied by individuals or groups. The book includes daily reflections for Ash Wednesday through Easter. Sunday of each week introduces a spiritual practice for the wilderness. The practices for the six Sundays of Lent are Being Present, Lament, Lectio Divina, Trust, Compassion, and Hospitality. Each reading contains a quotation from an Upper Room resource, a short scripture passage, an insightful reflection and prayer written by Richardson, and a single word for readers to carry with them throughout the day. "We come hungry to this season of Lent," Richardson writes, "hungry for words of life, for rituals of preparation, for disciplines to help us on our way." Walking in the Wilderness provides a spiritual feast for readers during the longest season of the Christian year.

Download or read book A Habit Called Faith written by Jen Pollock Michel and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's neurological research has placed habit at the center of human behavior; we are what we do repetitively. When we want to add something to our life, whether it's exercise, prayer, or just getting up earlier in the morning, we know that we must turn an activity into a habit through repetition or it just won't stick. What would happen if we applied the same kind of daily dedication to faith? Could faith become a habit, a given--automatic? With vulnerable storytelling and insightful readings of both Old and New Testament passages, Jen Pollock Michel invites the convinced and the curious into a 40-day Bible reading experience. Vividly translating ancient truths for a secular age, Michel highlights how the biblical text invites us to see, know, live, love, and obey. The daily reflection questions and weekly discussion guides invite both individuals and groups, believers and doubters alike, to explore how faith, even faith as small as a mustard seed, might grow into a life-defining habit.

This book was released on 2017-10-09 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 40 is a significant number in biblical studies. God made major changes and transformations after the period of 40 days, and in the case of the Israelite's, 40 years. Learn about the significance of the number 40, and be prepared for your own 40-day miracle of understanding and perhaps healing. The Wilderness Voyage Series is designed to help you gain spiritual understanding and breakthrough in specific areas. Each 40-day devotional guide focuses on what the bible teaches on a specific subject and is designed to help you grow in that area. Book 1 addresses BITTER ROOTS. The bitter roots we carry actually hold control over us -- even if it's on a subconscious level. They dictate how we respond to everything. As long as we allow them to continue to grow in us, they will maintain the control of our actions and responses. We all know that when we have weeds in our gardens, cutting off the tops does not take care of the problem. They just grow back. In order to get rid of the weeds so it does not choke the rest of the plants, you have to dig deep to get all of the roots out. It's the same with bitter roots growing inside of us. Let's take a close look at what the bible teaches us about bitter roots, what we can do about them and how we can protect ourselves from them.

Why did you not select a devotional book on the traditional 365 day scale? Or you may ask why not, a 2 week trial or a 30 day trial.why 40 days? The bible is full of examples of 40 days as anointed time with God. Lets take a look at some of these examples. To start with I am going to list for you all of the examples of 40 days, 40 weeks, 40 months and 40 years that I could find in the bible. Then I will explain to you why the Lord made 40 days so important to me. 40 days: 1) Ezekiel fasted for 40 days. The Lord told him to lie on his left side 1 day for each year that the children of Israel had sinned against the Lord. 2) Jesus fasted 40 days in the wilderness and was tempted of Satan prior to starting his ministry 3) It rained upon the earth 40 days when Noah and his family went into the Ark. 4) The Egyptians embalmed Joseph and the people mourned 40 days as per their custom for him. 5) Moses in Exodus went up on the mount and was before the Lord 40 days and the Lord gave him the laws and commandments. 6) The 12 spies checked out the land for 40 days then brought Moses their report. 7) Moses went back upon the mount for another 40 days of prayer and fasting in Deut. 8) Goliath presented himself morning & evening for 40 days before the children of Israel tempting them to send a man to fight him. 9) In I Kings the prophet rose, eat and drank and went 40 days on the strength of that meal unto Horeb the Mount of God. 10) Ezekiel lay for 40 days on his left side as penance for the 40 years of iniquity of the children of Israel. 11) Jonah preached, Yet 40 days and I will destroy this city, saith the Lord. 12) Jesus was on earth 40 days after his resurrection from the dead before he ascended to heaven. 40 weeks: 1) The normal delivery time of a baby. The mother carries the baby an average of 36-40 weeks. That is 9 months give or take two weeks as most doctors figure it. 2) 40 weeks stood for new life, new birth in the Old Testament 3) Old Testament Prophecy refers to 40 weeks. This is future translated into generations. 40 months: 1) Each time that the Lord send a word of warning to the children of Israel to clean up their ways, turn from their idols and return to Bethel, he gave them 40 months of words from the prophets and challenges to change, then when they did not turn their hearts toward God, he sent them into captivity. 2) 40 months is the probationary period of God. 40 years: 1) Moses was 40 years old when he killed the Egyptian and fled to the wilderness. 2) Moses remained for 40 years in the wilderness before he returned to Egypt to lead the children of Israel out of bondage. He was 80 years old. 3) The children of Israel wondered around in the wilderness, then came to Jordan and refused to cross over. Their faith was weak. God sent them back into the wilderness to ramble some more. For a total of 40 years they wandered in the wilderness. Then God took Moses on his 120 birthday. Because their faith was so weakthey were sent back out to wander another 40 years and that generation was not allowed to see the promise land. 4) After wandering around for a 40 year period in the wilderness, then Joshua led the Children of Israel across Jordan and took Jericho. 5) Isaac was 40 years old when he took Rebekah to wife 6) Esau was 40 years old when he took the Hittite to wife 7) Joshua was 40 years old when Moses assigned him to go into Jericho as a spy 8) 40 years later, Joshua led the children of Israel into Jericho 9) In Judges the land had rest 40 years 10) Also in Judges the land was in quite for 40 years---peace. 11) When the children of Israel did not obey God in Judges, he delivered them up to the Philistines control for 40 years 12) Samuel judged Israel forty years 13) Sauls son was 40 years old when he be

This book was released on 2016-06-19 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilderness Meditations is a book of devotions for reading and study during the 40 days of Lent. During prayer, the author, Dr. Donna Lane, received a prompting from Jesus to write Wilderness Meditations as a Lenten sacrifice of praise, instead of doing the more typical Lenten sacrifice of giving up something like a specific food or activity. Each morning, she would rise early, spend time in prayer and meditation, and then write what she felt the Lord was leading her to say for that day. As a result, the book contains devotions for each of the 40 days of Lent, along with devotions for Palm Sunday and Easter. Even though the book was designed for use over Lent as a journey toward deeper relationship with Jesus in preparation for the celebration of Easter, it is also appropriate for times of fasting, and for general spiritual growth and development. It can be used individually, or in small groups as a study guide, as well as for spiritual growth retreats. The focus of the devotions is on discovering the nature of God, developing an intimate, personal connection with Jesus, deepening your prayer life, and gaining a greater understanding of truth. Each devotion includes a theme for meditation for that day, all centering on the character of Christ. Each devotion and meditation can be easily completed in about 15 minutes, facilitating the reader's ability to complete the readings daily, even for those with busy schedules; however, for those individuals who want to deepen the experience, ample Scripture verses and opportunity for deeper reflection is available, as well as space for taking notes and exploring in prayer the themes presented.

It can be summed up easily with 1 word -- SELF-WILL. It is a demonstration of self-will. So why is rebellion so dangerous? It is not just outward behaviors, but an inner turmoil...a heart issue and a complete attitude problem. It brings judgment and turmoil. It destroys you, your health, your prosperity and your relationships. It can grow like a malignant cancer encompassing your whole being and spreading out to those around you.
