Book Plain and Ordinary Things

Download or read book Plain and Ordinary Things written by Deborah A. Dooley and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1995-05-25 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plain and Ordinary Things revisions the space of student writing in classrooms from a number of disciplinary and theoretical perspectives: feminist, literary, anthropological, and phenomenological. It actualizes the relationships among reading and writing, the songs of pre-literate people, nineteenth and twentieth century literary history, feminist theories about gender and language, and women's writing and pedagogy. The book explores the relations between private and public selves and women's roles as teachers and writers. Dooley also examines the authenticity of women's voices with which they speak to their students, their colleagues, and themselves. The discussion of reading, writing, and teaching in the book is informed by several premises. The most important of these is that writing and teaching are reproductive acts that gather up past experience, providing a ground for the expression and transformation of identity and that understanding this changes pedagogical theory and practice. The book also focuses on reading the writing of three twentieth century women authors: Virginia Woolf, Joanna Field (nee Marion Milner), and Adrienne Rich.

Book Encyclopedia of Ancient Deities

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Ancient Deities written by Charles Russell Coulter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 1190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the divine is the history of human thought. For as long as men and women have pondered the mysteries of their existence, they have answered their own questions with stories of gods and goddesses. Belief in these deities shaped whole civilizations, yet today many of their names and images lie buried. The Encyclopedia of Ancient Deities makes those names available to the general reader as well as the scholar. This reference work lists all the known gods through recorded history. Alphabetically arranged entries provide the name of each deity (with alternate spellings), as well as notes on names that may be linguistically or functionally related. The tribe or culture that worshiped the deity is identified, and the god's origins and functions are explained. An extensive bibliography provides opportunities for further research and an exhaustive index provides access to the entries through virtually all names, forms and kinds of deities.

Book The Grammar of Inalienability

Download or read book The Grammar of Inalienability written by Hilary Chappell and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-08-25 with total page 948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on language universals and research on linguistic typology are not antagonistic, but rather complementary approaches to the same fundamental problem: the relationship between the amazing diversity of languages and the profound unity of language. Only if the true extent of typological divergence is recognized can universal laws be formulated. In recent years it has become more and more evident that a broad range of languages of radically different types must be carefully analyzed before general theories are possible. Typological comparison of this kind is now at the centre of linguistic research. The series empirical approaches to language typology presents a platform for contributions of all kinds to this rapidly developing field. The distinctive feature of the series is its markedly empirical orientation. All conclusions to be reached are the result of a deepened study of empirical data. General problems are focused on from the perspective of individual languages, language families, language groups, or language samples. Special emphasis is given to the analysis of phenomena from little known languages, which shed new light on long-standing problems in general linguistics. The series is open to contributions from different theoretical persuasions. It thus reflects the methodological pluralism that characterizes the present situation. Care is taken that all volumes be accessible to every linguist and, moreover, to every reader specializing in some domain related to human language. A deeper understanding of human language in general, based on a detailed analysis of typological diversity among individual languages, is fundamental for many sciences, not only for linguists. Therefore, this series has proven to be indispensable in every research library, be it public or private, which has a specialization in language and the language sciences.
