Book State of the Heart

Download or read book State of the Heart written by Aïda Rogers and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In State of the Heart, Aïda Rogers has crafted an artful love letter to our state, with contributions from a host of nationally and regionally recognized writers who've written short essays on the South Carolina places that they cherish. This anthology provides a multifaceted historical and personal view of the Palmetto State. Thematically organized, this collection offers a geographic and emotional scope that is as diverse as its contributors. Sportswriters describe beloved arenas; historians reflect on church ruins and forts. A playwright recalls the magic of her first theater experience; a food writer revels in a coastal joint that serves fresh oysters. Backyards, front porches, a small library at a children's home, the drama and camaraderie of building the Savannah River Site, and places that are gone except in the memories of the writers who loved them—these are just a few of the locales covered, all showing how South Carolina has changed and inspired people in a variety of ways. State of the Heart evokes a sense of history and timelessness by bringing together heartfelt responses to South Carolina locales rooted in memory, drawing on reflection, inspiration, and love. The anthology reveals a state that is more than a playground for tourists; it's a state of human hiding places that echo in the hearts of its literary citizens. Though presented as a book about place, the collection is ultimately about our shared connections to one another, to a complex common past, and to ongoing efforts to frame and build a future of promise and possibility. Includes essays by: William P. Baldwin III, Kendall Bell, Cynthia Boiter, Shane Bradley, Lee Gordon Brockington, Ken Burger, Amanda Capps, John Celly, Robin Asbury Cutler, Billy Deal, Clair DeLune, Nathalie Dupree, Mary Eaddy, Starkey Flythe, Daniel E. Harmon, Steve Hoffius, Celie S. Holmes, Dot Jackson, Dianne "Dinah" Johnson, Sandra E. Johnson, John Lane, J. Drew Lanham, Nick Lindsay, Vennie Deas Moore, John Hammond Moore, Sam Morton, Horace Mungin, Kirk H. Neely, Liz Newall, Tom Poland, Dori Sanders, W. Book You Don t Have to Tell Everything You Know

Download or read book You Don t Have to Tell Everything You Know written by Liz Newall and published by Dudley Court Press, LLC. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I was amazed how well Liz Newall drew me into the world of Icie Jones. In lesser hands, the potentially complex telling of Icie's story could have been maudlin, but, delightfully, it's compelling, intriguing and sparkling with Southern delight. You Don't Have to Tell Everything You Know is, quite simply, wonderful." -Mark A. Stevens, author, The Clinchfield No. 1: Tennessee's Legendary Steam Engine Isamar Woods Jones McGee, was born in upstate South Carolina into a second family in 1865, one month after the Civil War ended. Her life is a product of unsettled times, family dynamics, and the human condition. She tells her story and those of the people around her through journal entries, which she annotates and amends in her final days. Her travels take her down the Savannah River and to the 1901 Charleston Exposition where she meets Beautiful Jim Key, billed as the world's smartest horse, and a young Nancy Columbia, the Inuit star of stage and screen in the early 1900s. Isamar's life and times offer a fascinating, often funny, sometimes complex testament to the joys and sorrows of the human heart -- regardless of era. You Don't Have to Tell Everything You Know attempts to find meaning in the randomness of life -- a butterfly wing, a war, a Bible verse, a chance meeting -- the stuff of one's own story. "Liz Newall has created an endearing, relatable character in Isamar 'Icie' Jones. And it is this character's story -- as told to us in richly detailed fashion throughout -- that captured my desire to learn all I could about Icie and her world. Let me encourage you to pour yourself a cognac (you'll understand why), curl up, and spend the next few hours taking in every line that Newall beautifully dedicated to the Southern dialogue." -Clem Stambaugh, poet, In Black and Light
