Book Why Only Two Slices of the Bread

Download or read book Why Only Two Slices of the Bread written by O’Neil B. Ankle and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-06-24 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day, people face challenges they’d overcome if only they aligned themselves with the right people when they decide to follow Jesus Christ. Preachers O’Neil B. Ankle and Wazer H. Walker explore how to resist negativity, seek help from the Lord and find the right people to journey with in this inspirational book. They challenge you to look at the bigger picture as it relates to achieving success. As you read, you’ll learn how to: • move out of your comfort zone to achieve more; • use a vision board to elevate your life; • find the right mentors to walk and run with; • view failure as a temporary roadblock. The authors also examine how fear can be crippling—and why it is essential to lean on Jesus Christ and follow His lead. A spirit of faith combined with prayer and preparation will lead to success. If striving for more than two slices of the bread means doing more to achieve goals, then don’t settle for two! Stop being mediocre and chase the extraordinary. Why not adopt the principle of big thinking, or dreaming big, or above and beyond blessings? Why limit your capacity to achieve, when you were created for achieving excellence, success, and victory and having more than enough? You were created to soar even when you may be working against the wind of adversity. “And the Lord shall make you the head, not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath” (Deuteronomy 28:13). The process of becoming the head starts within one’s mind. Despite working with the concept that says, “If I launch out, something positive can happen,” achievements will not come without struggles. Someone holding you back along with stagnation may have been your lot. However, it does not have to be a death sentence. You are better than that. Learn to talk to you. The struggle you will face on your way to progress will make you stronger. You will therefore come out of your struggle smiling, knowing that it was worth it. Purpose is never achieved without some kind of setback or failure. Nothing in this life worth having will come without some struggle.

Book excerpt: 2020 James Beard Award Winner The major new cookbook by the pioneer from Bread Alone, who revolutionized American artisan bread baking, with 60 recipes inspired by bakers around the world. At twenty-two, Daniel Leader stumbled across the intoxicating perfume of bread baking in the back room of a Parisian boulangerie, and he has loved and devoted himself to making quality bread ever since. He went on to create Bread Alone, the now-iconic bakery that has become one of the most beloved artisan bread companies in the country. Today, professional bakers and bread enthusiasts from all over the world flock to Bread Alone's headquarters in the Catskills to learn Dan's signature techniques and baking philosophy. But though Leader is a towering figure in bread baking, he still considers himself a student of the craft, and his curiosity is boundless. In this groundbreaking book, he offers a comprehensive picture of bread baking today for the enthusiastic home baker. With inspiration from a community of millers, farmers, bakers, and scientists, Living Bread provides a fascinating look into the way artisan bread baking has evolved and continues to change--from wheat farming practices and advances in milling, to sourdough starters and the mechanics of mixing dough. Influenced by art and science in equal measure, Leader presents exciting twists on classics such as Curry Tomato Ciabatta, Vegan Brioche, and Chocolate Sourdough Babka, as well as traditional recipes. Sprinkled with anecdotes and evocative photos from Leader's own travels and encounters with artisans who have influenced him, Living Bread is a love letter, and a cutting-edge guide, to the practice of making "good bread."

Book excerpt: This unique culinary history of America offers a fascinating look at our past and uses long-forgotten recipes to explain how eight flavors changed how we eat. The United States boasts a culturally and ethnically diverse population which makes for a continually changing culinary landscape. But a young historical gastronomist named Sarah Lohman discovered that American food is united by eight flavors: black pepper, vanilla, curry powder, chili powder, soy sauce, garlic, MSG, and Sriracha. In Eight Flavors, Lohman sets out to explore how these influential ingredients made their way to the American table. She begins in the archives, searching through economic, scientific, political, religious, and culinary records. She pores over cookbooks and manuscripts, dating back to the eighteenth century, through modern standards like How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman. Lohman discovers when each of these eight flavors first appear in American kitchens—then she asks why. Eight Flavors introduces the explorers, merchants, botanists, farmers, writers, and chefs whose choices came to define the American palate. Lohman takes you on a journey through the past to tell us something about our present, and our future. We meet John Crowninshield a New England merchant who traveled to Sumatra in the 1790s in search of black pepper. And Edmond Albius, a twelve-year-old slave who lived on an island off the coast of Madagascar, who discovered the technique still used to pollinate vanilla orchids today. Weaving together original research, historical recipes, gorgeous illustrations and Lohman’s own adventures both in the kitchen and in the field, Eight Flavors is a delicious treat—ready to be devoured.

Book Just Say the Word

Download or read book Just Say the Word written by G. Robert Jacks and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the years, I've heard some wonderful sermons," writes G. Robert Jacks. "I've also heard some duds. Some have been so extemporaneous they sounded as if the preacher hadn't prepared anything. Some have been such wondrously crafted literary pieces they sounded as if the preacher wanted to sound wondrously crafted and literary. Some have sounded as though the preacher were giving a lecture or reading a term paper. That's because the preacher had written a lecture or term paper. And some have captured the attention and the imagination and set the spark to ignite faith in the hearer. That's because they were written to be listened to, and to appeal to the sense-world of the hearers." Drawing on nearly thirty years of experience in critiquing sermon delivery, Jacks here offers a practical, hands-on approach to writing sermons that consider listeners first. Jacks gives samples and examples of writing that effectively captures and holds an audience's attention, and he offers practical tips and suggestions intended to help each of us find a preaching style and voice of our own. He also shows how to translate the jargon of theological textbooks into everyday language, suggests methods for rewriting sermons to avoid some of the pomposity of sermonic proclamation, and demonstrates ways to retell biblical narratives in fresh and imaginative ways. Just Say the Word! Writing for the Ear is a valuable resource that will help pastors and lay leaders communicate as effectively as possible the faith that is ours to share.

Book Only Gypsies Move on Sunday

Download or read book Only Gypsies Move on Sunday written by Irene McCoy and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Irene McCoy's humorous memoir begins in a blue-collar suburb outside of Chicago. The precocious youngster comes of age during the 1950s while putting up with an authoritative father, fearing the dreaded Commies, and haunted by the horrors of a nuclear holocaust. Later, as a married woman, she resigns herself to repeatedly packing up and following her journalist husband from cramped rooms in the Midwest and New York to accommodations in post-war Germany, none of which were likely to be featured in Better Homes and Gardens. Early on, she finds herself with a two-year-old in a country where she's out of milk and diapers and stores are about to close for the weekend. Aha, so this is what angst is. While the author occasionally embellished a few facts and changed the names of some characters for the sake of privacy, Only Gypsies Move on Sunday will be welcomed by readers who enjoy a sly peek into the often-frantic lives of their contemporaries.
