Book Transatlantic Economic Challenges in an Era of Growing Multipolarity

Download or read book Transatlantic Economic Challenges in an Era of Growing Multipolarity written by Jacob F. Kirkegaard and published by Peterson Institute. This book was released on 2012 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shifts in global economic dominance are by nature tectonic and never precipitated by single events. The Great Recession of 2008–09, however, has presented the European Union, its common currency the euro, and the United States with new global challenges. The transatlantic partnership has dominated the world economy since the early 20th century and, based upon US and European values and interests, has designed and sustained all its principal global political and economic institutions. But countries outside the European Union and United States now account for about half of the world economy, and in the aftermath of the Great Recession their share is growing rapidly. Hence their increasing role and concomitant demands for greater influence over global economic governance pose a series of challenges and opportunities to the European Union and the United States, as illustrated by the eclipse of the G-8 by the G-20. The contributions in this volume by subject area experts from the Peterson Institute for International Economics and Bruegel ponder how or whether the rise of outside actors of potentially equal, or even greater, economic weight will invariably force a rethinking of not only how the European Union and the United States should conduct policy externally towards the new rising economic poles, but also of the substantive contents of the EU-US bilateral economic and political relationship.

Book Local Content Requirements

Download or read book Local Content Requirements written by Gary Clyde Hufbauer and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the Great Recession of 2008–09, economists feared that protectionist policies might sweep the world economy, echoing the wave of tariff escalations during the Great Depression of the 1930s. To some surprise, officials were more restrained and largely avoided traditional forms of protection (tariffs and quotas). As a result, economists underestimated the incidence of new protectionism because policymakers increasingly turned to more opaque behind-the-border nontariff barriers (NTBs). Using a combination of statistical analysis and case studies, the authors show that local content requirements (LCRs), a form of NTB, have become increasingly popular. How much was global trade actually reduced on account of LCRs? A conservative estimate might be $93 billion. Case studies featured cover the healthcare sector in Brazil, wind turbines in Canada, the automobile industry in China, solar cells and modules in India, oil and gas in Nigeria, and "Buy American" restrictions on government procurement.

Book EMU Financial Markets and the World Economy

Download or read book EMU Financial Markets and the World Economy written by Thomas Moser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the conference "EMU and the Outside World", held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), December 11, 1998. The conference was organized by the Swiss Institute for Business Cycle Research (KOF), which is supported jointly by the ETH and the Swiss Society for Business Cycle Research (SGK), an organization comprising representatives from private industry, the Swiss National Bank and public authorities. On the eve of the final stage of European Economic and Mone tary Union (EMU), Zurich seemed to be a particularly appropriate place for such a conference. On the one hand, given its location and economic and financial links with the euro area, Switzerland is one of the "outside coun tries" most affected by EMU. On the other hand, it was nowhere else than in Zurich where the vision of "a United States of Europe" was expressed for the first time by Winston Churchill in his speech on September 19, 1946. For many EMU is a step in that direction, whether welcome or not. Most of the papers appearing in this volume were presented at the con ference and have been revised and updated. Three contributions, chapter 11- 13, were commissioned specially for this publication. Besides the authors of the chapters, special thanks are due to Guido Boller, Robert McCauley, Umberto Schwarz, and Charles Wyplosz.

Book Inside The Euro Crisis

Download or read book Inside The Euro Crisis written by Simeon Djankov and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-12 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In mid-2009 Simeon Djankov, who had dealt with a variety of economic and financial crises as chief economist for finance and private sector development at the World Bank, was suddenly thrust into the job of finance minister of his native Bulgaria. For nearly four years in that post, he attended more than 40 meetings of European finance ministers and had a front row seat at the intense discussions and struggles to overcome the economic and financial crisis that threatened to unravel the historic undertaking of an economically integrated Europe. In this personal account, Djankov details his odyssey on the front lines, observing Europe's fitful efforts to contain crises in Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, and France. He tells the inside story of how the European Central Bank assumed responsibility for the crisis, pledging to do "whatever it takes" to save the euro area. This candid book recounts the disagreements over fiscal austerity, monetary policy, and banking supervision, while focusing on the personalities who promoted progress—and those who opposed it. He also tells the dramatic story of the events that led to his own resignation as finance minister in 2013 over the policies he was pursuing to spare Bulgaria from getting sucked into the crisis.
