Book excerpt: Speaking is a key component for academic success for English as a Second Language (ESL) students because they are required to communicate effectively in English in today's world, where English has become the global language. However, no matter how good students are at the English language, they still encounter many speaking difficulties. Previous students have shown that speaking skills development in the classroom is generally underemphasized, and that teachers' talking time in class is more than students' talking time. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate speaking difficulties of young ESL students in the Vietnamese context as teachers should be aware of speaking difficulties the students face during the learning process so that they can find a way to address the problems accordingly. In order to collect data from a group of 114 young learners from multiple classes at an English center in Vietnam, a mixed-method study was designed using a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire with 24 items. To further understand the issues at hand, class observation, one on one interviews, and curriculum analysis were also conducted. The results showed that the majority of learners have difficulties in speaking due to limited linguistic knowledge which includes a lack of vocabulary, insufficient grammar knowledge, and poor sentence organization skills. Other difficulties include the learning environment and psychological factors, including a lack of speaking opportunities, low student motivation, mother tongue use, curriculum design, etc. The study also suggest pedagogical implications for boosting ESL learner's speaking proficiency.
