Book The Cat s Pajamas and Witch s Milk

Download or read book The Cat s Pajamas and Witch s Milk written by Peter De Vries and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twin tales of middle-class hilarity and despair from the writer who was dubbed “America’s preeminent comic novelist” by the New York Times When college professor Hank Tattersall sees his former flame, Lucy Stiles, at a campus concert, it sets off a chain reaction that results in one of the funniest and most unforgettable exit scenes in American literature—involving a locked door, an alcoholic dog, and a punning doppelgänger. The Cat’s Pajamas is the story of how Tattersall, a scrupulous self-reflector, falls from point A to point Z, rushing through a host of identities and indignities along the way. The unexamined life may not be worth living, he discovers, but the examined one is hardly a bed of roses. In Witch’s Milk, Tillie Seltzer has her own trials to attend to. Chief among them is her marriage to Pete, the kind of guy who tucks a cigarette behind his ear and calls everybody Frisbee. When they first met, Tillie had more sophisticated tastes—dark strangers, homburg hats—but she was also a thirtysomething virgin whose prospects weren’t getting any better. When she cracked a joke about the honeymoon being over, Pete believed her. Now stuck in suburbia with a sick child and a philandering husband, Tillie takes a hard look in the rearview mirror. Her search for an escape route will lead her to the most unexpected place of all. These short novels are linked by Tillie’s cameo appearance in Hank’s narrative and by the thrilling blend of satire, tragedy, and philosophy that defines the one-of-a-kind fiction of Peter De Vries.

Book excerpt: Ray Bradbury is, indisputably, one of America's greatest storytellers. The recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, he ranks among the most beloved -- and widely read -- of American authors. In The Cat's Pajamas, this "latter-day O. Henry" (Booklist) takes us on an amazing walk through his six-decade career, presenting twenty-two tales -- some old, some new, all but two never before published. Here you will find stories strange and scary, nostalgic and bittersweet, humorous and heart-touching, ranging from the not-so-long-gone past to an unknowable future: a group of senators drinks a bit too much -- and gambles away the United States; a newlywed couple buys an old house and finds their fledgling relationship tested; two mysterious strangers arrive at a rooming house and baffle their fellow occupants with strange crying in the night; a lonely woman takes a last chance on love. The final piece in the collection is a story-poem, a fond salute from Bradbury to his literary heroes Shaw, Chesterton, Dickens, Twain, Poe, Wilde, Melville, and Kipling. The Cat's Pajamas is just that -- the bee's knees -- a touching, timeless, and tender collection from the incomparable Ray Bradbury, and a anoramic view of an amazingly long, rich, and fertile creative career.

Book When I First Knew

  • Pages : 174 pages

Download or read book When I First Knew written by Joan Alden and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2010 Alden set out to write her autobiography. When I First Knew tells the story of her early years from 1951 to 1957 when she began to express herself as a young lesbian, long before the words gay and lesbian were adopted by the community. Strictly speaking, the book is a creative memoir because the sub-plot is fiction. When I First Knew is Abby Harper’s journey of self discovery in the 1950s with all the challenges of being different in an era of conformity, identity confusion, bullying, and the heartache of shame and rejection, which exist today in spite of new understanding and acceptance of the LGBT community. Abby’s story, both brutally honest and heartwarming, is told in Alden’s voice as a young girl, writing letters to an imaginary friend, Tweed. The story rings as true today as it did yesterday and will tomorrow, for the conflicts that arise from being different play out in the lives of young and old, gay and straight still. The title of the book echoes the first question gays, lesbians, and transgenders are asked, When did you first know?

Book The Hidden Psychology of Our Talking

Download or read book The Hidden Psychology of Our Talking written by David W. Shave and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the concept of the "unconscious entity" and reveals it as the most important concept in psychology. The book begins by presenting that the basic emotional need of humans is the need to be emotionally comfortable. Anything, that makes us emotionally uncomfortable, is a frustration of our basic emotional need, that then produces anger. The bigger the frustration, the more anger is produced. If that anger is not immediately expressed, it becomes repressed, and then stored in our mind as "unconscious entity," making any unwanted feeling we have, more unwanted. Unconscious entity arises from our unexpressed anger. It manifests itself as unwanted feelings. The feeling we least want is the very feeling most likely to be produced by our unexpressed anger. To reduce the intensity of an unwanted feeling, or to remove it completely, we must convert the unconscious entity, in our mind, back to expressed anger, which we can do, unconsciously, when we talk to a listener about what we dislike, or hate. What we dislike, or hate, will be unconsciously equated with an unconsciously perceived part of our listener. The anger is then directly expressed to that part and will be metaphorically hidden. This reveals a new dimension in human communication that has the capacity to cure psychogenic illnesses. Anger, arising from our stored unconscious entity, can also be reduced when it is expressed, inwardly, to ourselves, as in any hard work, exercise, or self-punishment, or by punishment inflicted by others. Reducing our unconscious entity makes us less emotionally uncomfortable, which is the same as making us more emotionally comfortable. That meets our basic emotional need indirectly. This book shows how we unconsciously hide our expressed anger, in our talking to a perceived listener. We do it by utilizing unconscious predicate-equating that this book shows, for the first time anywhere, is a prominent cognition of humans, and not limited to, or being diagnostic of, schizophrenia, as psychology and psychiatry now believe. It reveals the hidden and real cause for homelessness, PTSD, pedophilia, and why people senselessly kill as in mass killings. This book is a "must read," not only for anyone associated, in any way, with psychology or psychiatry, but anyone interested in the origin of their own unwanted feelings, and wanting to rid themselves of them.

Book excerpt: An aging California vintner is determined to protect her empire from a hostile family takeover and the dark secrets that could destroy everything she loves At age seventy-four, Assaria “Sari” LeBaron is still a force to be reckoned with. For decades, she has run the Baronet Vineyards, one of California’s largest and most successful wine producers, maintaining sole control even after a suspicious accident left her permanently crippled. And now, in her golden years, the formidable Sari refuses to relinquish power to her own children, a decision that has only served to increase tensions among her already emotionally damaged family members. But Sari’s ambitious son, Eric, is no longer willing to play a subservient role, and has begun working behind the scenes to take over the business, forming alliances within and outside the family in his effort to dethrone the unyielding matriarch. The most difficult fight of Sari LeBaron’s long and eventful life has begun; a heartbreaking struggle that will pit loved one against loved one and expose long-hidden secrets that could destroy both Sari’s business and her family. The LeBaron Secret is another riveting excursion into a world of privilege that Stephen Birmingham knows intimately. It is a breathtaking tale of secrets and lies, shady double-dealings, family skeletons, and the inner turmoil of the fabulously wealthy as only the bestselling author of “Our Crowd” and The Auerbach Will could tell it.
