Book 21st Century Apprenticeship

Download or read book 21st Century Apprenticeship written by Jeffrey A. Cantor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrates how a changing U.S. economy demands a revival of employer-based workforce training and suggests a new model of apprenticeship founded on the best of practices past and present, overseas and at home. Registered apprenticeship provides opportunities to "learn and earn." Research data indicates that individuals who graduate with an apprenticeship certificate have higher starting salaries than those with only a two-year degree. This book examines the rebirth of an age-old concept in the 21st century—apprenticeship. Serving as a call to action with a positive message for parents, entrepreneurs, educators, legislators, and political leaders, the book analyzes the condition of the U.S. and world economies from an employment and occupational perspective and describes how apprenticeship training can significantly bolster the economic recovery. Author Jeffrey A. Cantor, PhD, explains how modern-day apprenticeships can serve business owners in developing workers, parents in guiding their children into productive careers and professions, community leaders in instituting workforce development policies that support both entrepreneurs and citizens, and college educators in working more effectively with business and industry within our communities. Readers will learn how apprenticeship can provide young people with invaluable opportunities to train for desirable, high-tech, and high-wage jobs, without their having to "give up" on a college education—it is possible to have both.

Book excerpt: This document records the oral and written testimony given at a congressional hearing on school-to-work transitions, focusing on four local programs that have involved cooperation between industry, labor, schools, and the local community to help young people bridge the gap between school and work. The four programs described are as follows: (1) the General Motors-United Auto Workers Quality Education Program designed to bring female and minority high school students into the skilled trades; (2) BOSS (Business as On-Site Schools), a cooperative effort with Southern Bell, the Communication Workers of America, and the Alachua County School Board in Florida, in which at-risk students work at a Southern Bell facility for 20 hours per week under the direction of a mentor; (3) the Pennsylvania Youth Apprenticeship Program of the Industrial Modernization Center in Pennsylvania, which is operated as a machine shop youth apprenticeship program primarily for the metal trades; and (4) the Roosevelt Renaissance Program, a high school restructuring program in Portland, Oregon. All witnesses emphasized the cooperation needed in their programs, and the successes they had achieved. More such efforts were advocated, and federal legislation addressing the need for such programs is being drafted. (KC)

Download or read book Skill Wars written by Edward E. Gordon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skill Wars shows how to increase productivity and profits by making investments in human capital development. It addresses the disparity between the available jobs and available workers. By education and training only 20% of all American workers can fit well into our demanding high-tech workplace. How do we train the 80%? Skill Wars defines the race between advanced technology investment and human resources investment and shows managers how to measure that investment. It introduces a Human Capital Scoreboard of seven new business management/measurement tools including a more accurate calculation of ROI (Return on Investment) for employee performance improvement programs. It also provides case studies of how quality training can deliver on more problem-solving/thinking skills. It has a foreword by Joseph Boyett, author of The Guru Guide and Workplace 2000. Skill Wars is a "basic workplace performance primer" that presents complex issues in a simple language and format that will move both business leaders and the American public to give their popular support. There are few viable alternatives. Gordon believes that, "Only at great peril can Americans continue to largely ignore the workplace as an important arena that helps structure learning for life."

Book Building America s Skilled Technical Workforce

Download or read book Building America s Skilled Technical Workforce written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-06-04 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skilled technical occupationsâ€"defined as occupations that require a high level of knowledge in a technical domain but do not require a bachelor's degree for entryâ€"are a key component of the U.S. economy. In response to globalization and advances in science and technology, American firms are demanding workers with greater proficiency in literacy and numeracy, as well as strong interpersonal, technical, and problem-solving skills. However, employer surveys and industry and government reports have raised concerns that the nation may not have an adequate supply of skilled technical workers to achieve its competitiveness and economic growth objectives. In response to the broader need for policy information and advice, Building America's Skilled Technical Workforce examines the coverage, effectiveness, flexibility, and coordination of the policies and various programs that prepare Americans for skilled technical jobs. This report provides action-oriented recommendations for improving the American system of technical education, training, and certification.

Book Apprentice Nation

Book excerpt: College isn’t for everyone. It’s time to challenge the status quo and embrace the potential of apprenticeships in tech, healthcare, finance, and more—which can provide a sustainable pathway to economic opportunity. For decades, college has been the only respectable way to access the world of work, despite paralyzing tuition and a dire lack of practical skills that has left 40 percent of college graduates underemployed, unfulfilled, and struggling to repay student loan debt. Education and workforce expert Ryan Craig explores how a modern apprenticeship system will allow students and job seekers to jump-start their careers by learning while they earn—ultimately leading to greater workforce diversity and geographic mobility. With a deep dive into the history behind America’s outdated college system, Craig reveals: The origins of the student debt crises and admissions scandals Why apprenticeships are an effective pathway to career opportunity What America can do to catch up with other nations making apprenticeship opportunities broadly available Where students and job seekers can go to land an apprenticeship Featuring a directory of US apprenticeship programs by industry and location, Apprentice Nation is an accessible blueprint for a country where young Americans of all backgrounds can launch careers in a variety of in-demand fields. With just a few common sense changes to education and workforce development, anapprentice nation will put the American Dream within reach—for everyone.
