Book We Who Work the West

Download or read book We Who Work the West written by Kiara Kharpertian and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We Who Work the West examines literary representations of class, labor, and space in the American West from 1885 to 2012. Moving from María Amparo Ruiz de Burton’s representations of dispossessed Californio ranchers in the mid-nineteenth century to the urban grid of early twentieth-century San Francisco in Frank Norris’s McTeague to working and unemployed cowboys in the contemporary novels of Cormac McCarthy and Larry McMurtry, Kiara Kharpertian provides a panoramic look at literary renderings of both individual labor—physical, tangible, and often threatened handwork—and the epochal transformations of central institutions of a modernizing West: the farm, the ranchero, the mine, the rodeo, and the Native American reservation. The West that emerges here is both dynamic and diverse, its on-the-ground organization of work, social class, individual mobility, and collective belonging constantly mutating in direct response to historical change and the demands of the natural environment. The literary West thus becomes more than a locus of mythic nostalgia or consumer fantasy about the American past. It becomes a place where the real work of making that West, as well as the suffering and loss it often entailed, is reimagined.

Book Women Who Work

Download or read book Women Who Work written by Ivanka Trump and published by Penguin Group. This book was released on 2024-05-14 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! Ivanka is donating the unpaid portion of her advance and all future royalties received from Women Who Work to the Ivanka M. Trump Charitable Fund, a donor advised fund that will make grants to organizations that empower and educate women and girls.* "This is a chatty step-by-step guide to living a happy life and getting ahead in a career." —USA Today "The advice is spot-on for everyone, not just women." —Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com and author of Delivering Happiness I believe that when it comes to women and work, there isn’t one right answer. The only person who can create a life you’ll love is you. Our grandmothers fought for the right to work. Our mothers fought for the choice to be in an office or to stay at home. Our generation is the first to fully embrace and celebrate the fact that our lives are multidimensional. Thanks to the women who came before us and paved the way, we can create the lives we want to lead—which look different for each of us. I’ve been fortunate to be able to build my career around my passions, from real estate to fashion. But my professional titles only begin to describe who I am and what I value. I have been an executive and an entrepreneur, but also—and just as importantly—a wife, mother, daughter, and friend. To me, “work” encompasses my efforts to succeed in all of these areas. After appearing on The Apprentice years ago and receiving a flood of letters from young women asking for guidance, I realized the need for more female leaders to speak out publicly in order to change the way society thinks and talks about “women who work.” So I created a forum to do just that. This book evolves the conversation that started on IvankaTrump.com, where so many incredible women (and men!) have shared their experiences, advice, ambitions, and passions. Women who work lead meetings and train for marathons. We learn how to cook and how to code. We inspire our employees and our children. We innovate at our current jobs and start new businesses. Women Who Work will equip you with the best skills I’ve learned from some of the amazing people I’ve met, on subjects such as identifying opportunities, shifting careers smoothly, negotiating, leading teams, starting companies, managing work and family, and helping change the system to make it better for women—now and in the future. I hope it will inspire you to redefine success and architect a life that honors your individual passions and priorities, in a way only you can. * The Ivanka M. Trump Charitable Fund (the “Fund”) is a donor advised fund that supports the economic empowerment of women and girls. Ivanka Trump is the grant advisor to the Fund and sole member of IT WWW Pub, LLC (the “LLC”), which receives royalties from the publication of Women Who Work. The LLC will contribute a minimum $425,000 to the Fund, which is the unpaid portion of the advance, net of expenses. In addition, the LLC will contribute all future royalties it receives that are in excess of the advance to the Fund during the period from May 1, 2017 to May 1, 2022.

Book Women Who Work Too Much

Download or read book Women Who Work Too Much written by Tamu Thomas and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women can have it all, but do we really want it? This book shows women how to escape the trap of toxic productivity, build boundaries, avoid burnout, and live with joy. We have been conditioned into believing our value is in what we do rather than who we are. Do you find yourself saying “yes” because you were never taught how to say “no”? Are you working all hours of the day, but not feeling good about your achievements amplifying your perceived mistakes or weaknesses? Many of us believe that to be our best selves we should do more, but the result is often stress, burnout, and disillusionment. This book offers a healing hand to help you step out of the same old patterns of using success or overworking as a source of self-validation. For women, work doesn’t stop in the workplace. There is a huge load at home that still falls to women—whether looking after children, caring for aging parents, or simply taking the reins of running the household. This is a book for women who work too much. It is for women who are ready to hear the wake-up call coming from within: coming from their frazzled nervous system, from that sense of underlying anxiety they have learnt to normalize over the years, and from an inner knowing that—just maybe—it doesn’t have to be this way. Women Who Work Too Much will help you to: become your own advocate feel at home with who you already are and in your own skin know what needs to be done, rather than trying to do it all This book is a manifesto for change and a call to inaction. Women Who Work Too Much will support you to establish healthier boundaries, stop over-committing, and move into a feeling of safety so that you can thrive, prosper, and flourish.

This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Counsellors working with young people often find it can feel like messy, complex work. The assorted supervision stories in this book explore the important issues that counsellors working with young people face, and look at how supervision can help them overcome these issues. Thoughtful and engaging, each story is a snapshot from a counsellor's career. They address questions such as 'What gets talked about?', 'What issues recur with young people and how are they addressed in supervision?' and 'What helps counsellors to move on when they're stuck?' As a veteran counsellor and supervisor with 40 years' experience, Nick Luxmoore vividly recounts moments of highs and lows, of uncertainties and of breakthroughs, and of the unique dilemmas experienced by counsellors and supervisors working with young people.

Book Exploring Resources Life Balance and Well Being of Women Who Work in a Global Context

Download or read book Exploring Resources Life Balance and Well Being of Women Who Work in a Global Context written by Roxane L Gervais and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents research on women’s experiences, attitudes and perceptions, considering their work roles and in the context of their lives outside work. It explores the various choices women may opt to take, and the resources they may use, and presents options they may wish to consider over the course of their working lives. The research presented here is varied and the methods used include cross-sectional and longitudinal research, reviews of literature, as well as experiences and practical suggestions from clinical, organisational, health and occupational health psychologists, in addition to occupational safety and health practitioners. It looks at women who are part-time employees, those in vulnerable positions in the informal economy to women in mainstream, full-time employment. The chapters present theoretical underpinnings of how, what, when and where women approach work options, approach life and approach living. The overarching factor that links these chapters is the focus on women as a vital resource in the world economy, with an exploration of the options that are available to them and how these could be maximised to retain a productive and healthy female workforce.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their follow-up to Reading Wellness, Jan Burkins and Kim Yaris explore how some traditional scaffolding practices may actually rob students of important learning opportunities and independence. Who's Doing the Work? suggests ways to make small but powerful adjustments to instruction that hold students accountable for their own learning. Educators everywhere are concerned about students whose reading development inexplicably plateaus, as well as those who face challenging texts without applying the strategies they've been taught. When such problems arise, our instinct is to do more. But when we summarize text before reading or guide students when they encounter difficult words, are we leading them to depend on our support? If we want students to use strategies independently, Jan and Kim believe that we must question the ways our scaffolding is getting in the way. Next generation reading instruction is responsive to students' needs, and it develops readers who can integrate reading strategies without prompting from instructors. In Who's Doing The Work?, Jan and Kim examine how instructional mainstays such as read-aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading look in classrooms where students do more of the work. Classroom snapshots at the end of each chapter help translate the ideas in the book into practice. Who's Doing the Work? offers a vision for adjusting reading instruction to better align with the goal of creating independent, proficient, and joyful readers.
