Book excerpt: Excerpt from Who's Who in South Dakota, Vol. 2: Thirty-Three Biographies Vol. I, Who's Who in South Dakota, containing the first fifty of these articles, having found a prompt and steady sale, the publishers concluded that there is a demand in the state for this class of personal, or conversational, literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South Dakota, Vol. 2: Its History and Its People There was no strife among the republican leaders for the nomination for delegate at this time, but there was a general sentiment that Judge Jefferson P. Kidder, Of Vermillion. Judge of the First Judicial District was better situated to unite the various discordant elements and satisfy the rivalries of the leaders, than any of those known to be qualified for the place. Judge Kidder had been on the bench for ten years, and had given excellent satisfaction; he was also a man who stood high as a citizen. Genial, popular, and though he had been mixed in with the pulling and hauling that had distinguished past campaigns he had managed to maintain the respect of his opponents and the confidence of the people. The judge was acceptable to the republican leaders in the two factions of the contest in 1872, and after a little stage play by several counties who wished to compliment their favorite sons, the judge was nominated by the territorial republican convention which was held that year at Elk Point, by a unanimous vote. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South Dakota: A Republic of Friends The cross of gold, have been party or martial mottoes that have united and inspired to group patriotism and action. Can we not consciously apply these simple prin ciples of social psychology to more lasting social benefit? Will not the children of this state receive an uplift if they repeat over and over, South Dakota, a Republic of Friends, South Dakota, the Sunshine State, Under God the People Rule? The state song, composed for the children of South Dakota, sets these slogans to a simple and easily learned melody and it cannot be sung too often or too heartily. The word Dakota means A Republic of Friends. Will it not become more and more such a republic in fact if the children are taught over and over what that name signifies? When Dakota Indians meet they greet each other in soft accents, Ko - dah, or Ko-lah, that is, Friend. They proudly call themselves Dah-ko-tabs. No more honest and upright class of primitive people ever were found, and none, when educated, show more splendid intellect and character. May not the minds and hearts of the latest Dakota children be inspired by such wholesome and pleasing sentiments in association with their common name? When alone and lonely in the midst of a great busy city, the author was once pleas antly accosted by a stranger, who, recognizing the writer and extending a cordial hand, with a smile said, Dah ko - tah. It was a pleasing, heart-warming greeting. What's in a name? Why, whatever meaning we put into that name. May the teachers of this great state help the children to make Dakota in reality what it is in name, a republic of friends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Dakota Territory, And, South Dakota, Its History and Its People, Vol. 3 Probably no subject is of greater historic interest to the people of the state than the development of the natural resources. South Dakota did not start out on the perilous but prosperous voyage of statehood with either a bankrupt treasury or a dearth of resources that could be made useful. Three very important resources shone above all others when the young state began its career, namely: (1) The mines; (2) the plant products, and (3) the live stock industry. All three had grown wonderfully under the sunny skies of territorial existence, but had in reality only well commenced. In addition and only of secondary importance, were the following additional means of resource (1) Lignite and coal beds; (2) artesian water supply; (3) cement formations; (4) building stone; (5) fer tile soil; (6) available moisture for crops; (7) abundant timber in the extreme western part and along many streams; (8) extension of the corn growing area; (9) introduction of drouth resistant plants; (10) irrigation and intensive farm ing; (11) improvement of live stock; (12) diversified farming and rotation of crops (13) extension of the fruit growing area; (14) oil and natural gas deposits; (15) available water power; (16) the intelligent, mixed and industrious popula tion; (17) healthful climate; (18) large amount of annual sunshine; (19) wild game for food, furs, pelts, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The University of North Dakota Departmental Bulletins Vol 2

Download or read book The University of North Dakota Departmental Bulletins Vol 2 written by University of North Dakota and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-27 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of North Dakota Departmental Bulletins, Vol. 2: 1. The State-Wide Use of the University Library; 2. The Demand for the Teacher-Librarian; February, 1917 The spirit of modern library development becomes more and more truly a spirit of large and far-reaching service; a spirit of sincerity in attempting to meet some of the real needs of men and women and to instill into the hearts oi boys and girls such a love for books that they may be led into the habit of good reading. Ive believe that every com munity owes it to itself not only to have a library but to have a library that is in truth a living, vital force in the community. Much has been said concerning the library of yesterday, the librarian of which was seemingly content with collecting and preserving books. Librarians of today still believe it to be their duty and privilege to be constantly gathering into libraries good books and many valuable sources of information, but not that they may be locked up in cases and carefully guarded; not even that they may be ready for service and usefulness in time of need, but that they may be, in so far as possible and practicable, sent into the homes and put into service. Librarians are coming to see more clearly the possibilities of their profession and to look upon their work as some thing more than routine, essential as routine is in every library. They are coming to realize that there is truth in the statement that the real test of the value of the library is in its use. That the truly useful library is far more than a building furnished with book-shelves and stocked with row after row of books, that it is in deed and in truth, as some one has said, an active, potential force in the community, which reaches out and touches and quickens the lives of individuals in the community, developing and enriching those lives in every possible way. Such is the Spirit of present-day library development. No one can deny, however, if we are to judge from work ac complished and lines of service extended, that the spirit of modern library development would seem to pertain more to the public library than to that of the college and univer sitv. The development of the latter, all librarians know. Has not kept pace with that of the former. It has been too much the tendency of such libraries to serve only their own immediate communities - the student bodies and the faculties. This is due, no doubt in a large mesure, to the entirely inadequate support that it receives. It would seem that university authorities have sometimes failed to recog nize the real function of the university library, the larger scope and function of its activities, the multiplicity of detail connected with its administration. They have failed to see that the library is really an institution in itself, with great possibilities for state - wide service and that, as such. It should receive liberal financial support; and we have the conviction that the fault lies partly with the librarians in not making the in uence of their libraries felt more in the state at large - in not putting them upon a plane which will command the respect which justly belongs to them.
