Download or read book Who s Who in South Carolina written by Geddings Hardy Crawford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Who's Who in South Carolina: A Dictionary of Contemporaries Containing Biographical Notices of Eminent Men of South Carolina In presenting Who's Who in South Carolina, the author desires to thank Alexander S. Salley, State Historical Commissioner, and other men who have rendered much valuable information in the matter of suggesting men whose names are worthy of perpetuation. Here are epitomized the stories of opportunity grandly improved by hundreds of men who have helped to shape the conditions of today in South Carolina thought and action and who are bearing an important share in fashioning the still more grand Tomorrow of our State. The work of selecting the names and procuring biographical material has been prosecuted with the utmost zeal and care; but, while the results have been gratifying, it is true that there are names that should be included that are absent. In a State as large as ours even approximate success in the judicious selection of a certain class of distinguished names is a difficult task; and, after they are selected, appropriate data in regard to them are not always procurable. Therefore, even with the utmost effort, there is an unrecorded remnant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Quest for Streetcar Unionism in the Carolina Piedmont 1919 1922

Download or read book The Quest for Streetcar Unionism in the Carolina Piedmont 1919 1922 written by Jeffrey M. Leatherwood and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the courtroom doors closed in 1919, the tragic Charlotte Streetcar Strike has haunted the collective memory of the Carolina Piedmont region. During a season of labor unrest, it briefly made national headlines. Five men were killed and at least twelve others were wounded by gunfire during a demonstration against Southern Public Utilities, a subsidiary of James B. Duke’s Southern Power. For many who lived afterward in North Carolina’s “Queen City,” the strike and riot were events better left forgotten, while, for later generations, the “Battle of the Barn” has become an item of curiosity. As the centennial approaches, this book represents the result of over ten years’ worth of primary research about the Charlotte Streetcar Strike, a story that rightfully belongs to a larger narrative about the AFL’s campaign to organize transportation workers among the textile mill towns of North and South Carolina. Prior to the 1919 Charlotte Strike, the national streetcar union had overcome fierce anti-labor sentiment, from South Carolina’s state capital of Columbia to the Upcountry citadel of Spartanburg. To AFL organizers, Charlotte represented the last link in the Piedmont chain.

Book The Violent World of Broadus Miller

Download or read book The Violent World of Broadus Miller written by Kevin W. Young and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1927, an itinerant Black laborer named Broadus Miller was accused of killing a fifteen-year-old white girl in Morganton, North Carolina. Miller became the target of a massive manhunt lasting nearly two weeks. After he was gunned down in the North Carolina mountains, his body was taken back to Morganton and publicly displayed on the courthouse lawn on a Sunday afternoon, attracting thousands of spectators. Kevin W. Young vividly illustrates the violence-wracked world of the early twentieth century in the Carolinas, the world that created both Miller and the hunters who killed him. Young provides a panoramic overview of this turbulent time, telling important contextual histories of events that played into this tragic story, including the horrific prison conditions of the era, the rise of the Ku Klux Klan, and the influx of Black immigrants into North Carolina. More than an account of a single murder case, this book vividly illustrates the stormy race relations in the Carolinas during the early 1900s, reminding us that the legacy of this era lingers into the present.
