Book Reform and Resistance in Schools and Classrooms

Download or read book Reform and Resistance in Schools and Classrooms written by Donna E. Muncey and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What constitutes better schooling for today's youth? In 1984 educational theorist Theodore R. Sizer formulated nine Common Principles to answer this question and launched The Coalition of Essential Schools, an organization of schools attempting to change their own structure, curriculum, pedagogy, and power relations according to Sizer's Principles. This important book, the first comprehensive look at Coalition schools, charts the course of reform at eight charter member schools. Donna E. Muncey and Patrick J. McQuillan, experts in anthropology as well as education, conducted a five-year ethnographic study to understand what happened in Coalition schools. The authors looked at curricular and pedagogical developments; how changes affected individual students, teachers, administrators, and other school personnel; and how American cultural beliefs influenced efforts to change.

Book The Trouble with Ed Schools

Download or read book The Trouble with Ed Schools written by David F. Labaree and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American schools of education get little respect. They are portrayed as intellectual wastelands, as impractical and irrelevant, as the root cause of bad teaching and inadequate learning. In this book a sociologist and historian of education examines the historical developments and contemporary factors that have resulted in the unenviable status of ed schools, offering valuable insights into the problems of these beleaguered institutions. David F. Labaree explains how the poor reputation of the ed school has had important repercussions, shaping the quality of its programs, its recruitment, and the public response to the knowledge it offers. He notes the special problems faced by ed schools as they prepare teachers and produce research and researchers. And he looks at the consequences of the ed school’s attachment to educational progressivism. Throughout these discussions, Labaree maintains an ambivalent position about education schools--admiring their dedication and critiquing their mediocrity, their romantic rhetoric, and their compliant attitudes.

Book Historically Black Colleges and Universities 1976 1994

Download or read book Historically Black Colleges and Universities 1976 1994 written by Charlene Hoffman and published by Department of Education Office of Educational. This book was released on 1996 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a statistical overview of trends in the development of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). An introductory chapter reviews the history of HBCUs and discusses the current status in terms of enrollment, degrees conferred, staff, salaries, and finances. Nine text figures and 54 summary tables provide detailed data organized into the same categories. Supplemental information is given for all public and private institutions to allow comparative evaluations with all institutions. The report finds that: (1) as a group, HBCUs entered a period of growth during the late l980s, with some of the increase due to a larger proportion of black students choosing HBCUs; (2) over the 1976-1994 period the student racial/ethnic mix became more diversified, especially for degree recipients; (3) the number of degrees conferred has also risen since 1990, due mainly to increased enrollments; (4) financial and faculty resources at public HBCUs are stronger than those at private institutions; (6) faculty salaries at all HBCUs have increased at about the same rate as at all institutions, but nevertheless remain at a lower level than institutions of higher education in general; (7) educational expenditures at all HBCUs have increased, but at a lesser rate than at comparable institutions. Appendixes include a guide to the sources used and the comparability of data, information on methodology, and a glossary. (CH)

Book In Defence of Religious Schools and Colleges

Download or read book In Defence of Religious Schools and Colleges written by Elmer John Thiessen and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2001 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often argued that religious schools and colleges promote intolerance, divisiveness, and fanaticism and that they violate the principle of academic freedom. Some writers also suggest that economic support for religious schools by the state violates the principle of the separation of church and state. Elmer Thiessen provides a philosophical defence of religious schools and colleges against these and other standard objections. He concludes with a radical proposal: a pluralistic educational system will better prepare students for citizenship in pluralist liberal democracies than a monopolistic state-maintained school system. In placing his argument within the context of liberal-democratic values Thiessen gives concrete examples of objections to religious schools and offers practical suggestions that follow from the philosophical treatment of the problem. In Defence of Religious Schools and Colleges bridges the gap between philosophical argument and educational practice. It will be of interest not only to philosophers and educational theorists but also to practitioners in education. Academics, policy makers, political theorists, lay-people, teachers, administrators, and parents B those who object to religious schools and colleges and those who find themselves trying to answer the objections B will benefit from reading this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 1994 classic work on student retention, Vincent Tinto synthesizes far-ranging research on student attrition and on actions institutions can and should take to reduce it. The key to effective retention, Tinto demonstrates, is in a strong commitment to quality education and the building of a strong sense of inclusive educational and social community on campus. He applies his theory of student departure to the experiences of minority, adult, and graduate students, and to the situation facing commuting institutions and two-year colleges. Especially critical to Tinto’s model is the central importance of the classroom experience and the role of multiple college communities.
