This book was released on 2008-02-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHO has produced a first comprehensive analysis of global tobacco use and control: The WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic 2008. The report confirms that the global tobacco epidemic is one of the greatest public health threats of modern times that left unchecked could result in one billion deaths in the 21st century. The epidemic is shifting towards the developing world where 80% of tobacco-related deaths will occur within a few decades. The shift is caused by a global tobacco industry strategy to target young people and adults in the developing world. The report concludes that although there has been progress in recent years virtually every country needs to do more . Currently only 5% of the world s population is fully covered by any one of the key interventions that have significantly reduced tobacco use in the countries that have implemented them. The WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic 2008 identifies as powerful response to the epidemic a set of the six key proven strategies to drive down tobacco use - the mpower package - whose implementation provides the best chance for saving millions of lives devastated by tobacco: Monitor tobacco use and prevention policies. Protect people from tobacco smoke. Offer help to quit tobacco use. Warn about the dangers of tobacco. Enforce bans on tobacco advertising promotion and sponsorship. Raise taxes on tobacco. The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) created political momentum for global tobacco prevention. The mpower package provides a clear roadmap to help countries fulfil and build on their WHO FCTC obligations and save many millions of lives by the middle of this century. Countries are not alone in combating the tobacco industry which is powerful and cash-rich. WHO together with its partners is scaling-up capacity to help implement the mpower strategies at country level. The WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic 2008 highlights the potential for partnerships to tackle the tobacco epidemic in developing countries. By taking action to implement the mpower policies governments and civil society can create the enabling environment necessary to protect people from second-hand smoke help people quit tobacco use and prevent its initiation.

Book excerpt: "Surveillance is the ongoing, systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health-related data essential to the planning, implementation and evaluation of public health practice. It is closely integrated with the timely determination of data to those responsible for prevention and control. The atlas visualizes a decade of work in establishing the Global Tobacco Surveillance System (GTSS), which has become the largest public health surveillance system ever developed and maintained. The atlas documents the components of the GTSS, which include the monitoring of tobacco use and tobacco control measures among youth, school personnel, health professions students and adults. It maps the coverage of the surveys and provides data on the various elements of a comprehensive tobacco control strategy outlined in the Who- FCTC and MPOWER policy. It illustrates the importance of enhancing country capability to develop, implement and evaluate tobacco control programs though and a systematic framework. This resource will be invaluable to policy makers, public health practitioners, scholars and students interested in tobacco control." - p. 9

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This completely revised and enlarged 2nd edition of The Tobacco Epidemic provides a comprehensive update of the clinical, public health and political aspects of tobacco smoking. Since its 1st edition in 1997, knowledge on the health hazards of tobacco and nicotine addiction has increased considerably, but recent data has shown that the global problem has become more aggravated in low- and middle-income countries: if current trends continue, tobacco smoking will be responsible for the deaths of 1 billion people in the 21st century. Written by outstanding international experts, the book covers the history of tobacco production and use, the economics of tobacco use and control, as well as the health consequences of active and passive smoking in both adults and children. Special chapters discuss the impact of media, movies and TV on tobacco consumption in young people, the patterns and predictors of smoking cessation in the general population and in different social subgroups, and initiatives supported by the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Readers will find the latest information on how nicotine dependence is treated with nicotine replacement products, what role health care professionals play in helping smokers to quit and what effects smoke-free environments, advertising bans and price increases have on smoking prevalence. The potential harms and benefits of smokeless tobacco, waterpipe tobacco smoking and electronic cigarettes are also evaluated. This book is a must-read for anyone in the medical profession who treats patients with smoking-related diseases and for those engaged in tobacco control. It will also be appreciated by interested nonmedical readers like journalists and legislators.

Book Smoking Environments in China

Download or read book Smoking Environments in China written by Ross Barnett and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-09 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills a major gap in research into smoking and tobacco control in China. In recent decades, few studies have explored the significance of geographical factors and the role they have played either in affecting the prevalence of smoking or in tobacco control responses to the smoking epidemic in China. In light of this, the book investigates the importance of national, regional and local environmental factors affecting smoking in China. It shows how geographical, social and institutional contexts have influenced the implementation and success of tobacco control initiatives, and situates smoking trends in China in a broader global context. The authors synthesize Chinese and western research on the smoking epidemic and uniquely focus on the importance of environmental factors and Chinese cultural perspectives in understanding smoking behaviour and the ineffectiveness of many tobacco control initiatives, especially how these conflict with Chinese economic policy. The book is aimed at academic and policy audiences both internationally and inside China, and will be of interest to a wide audience, not only geographers, but also epidemiologists, sociologists and others working in public health.
