But you’re certainly asking questions about change in the church—where it’s coming from, why it’s happening, and how you’re supposed to hang on and follow God through it—even get out ahead of it so your church is faithfully meeting its timeless calling and serving the new opportunities of this age. Based on conversations with thousands of pastors, combined with on-the-ground research from more than 50,000 churches, best-selling author Thom S. Rainer shares an eight-stage roadmap to leading change in your church. Not by changing doctrine. Not by changing biblical foundations. But by changing methodologies and approaches for reaching a rapidly changing culture. You are the pastor. You are the church staff person. You are an elder. You are a deacon. You are a key lay leader in the church. This is the book that will equip you to celebrate and lead change no matter the cost. The time is now.

Book A Pew Sitter s Search for God

Download or read book A Pew Sitter s Search for God written by Houston M. Burnside and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Houston Burnside’s journey of faith began in his childhood – not unlike most children. This book helps the reader understand how people who touch us influence the images of God we take with us all our lives. This author was a seeker from the beginning. He shares in beautiful, and sometimes painful stories, how his concept of God changed through his life experiences. Every opportunity that came his way to test his faith was connected to people he learned to include in his circle of faith. He searched for God in family hardships and relationships...in a grandmother who raised him during the first decade of his life...with a loving mother who cared for him in the growing years...and as an underage Marines in China where he met and loved missionaries who helped him on his journey. Coming home, he married and had a family of his own bringing high points of joy and challenges. Houston tells his incredible story of seeking and winning a higher education which prepared him for pastoral ministry. He was ordained but still seeking. At 30 years old, he sought God among the books and writings of giant theologians and philosophers as he studied for his Ph D. He found God there, too, in the most unexpected places. Houston Burnside weaves his remarkable stories across the stepping-stones of change, bringing him through his 27-year career as a professor at San Diego State University. A Pew-sitter’s Search for God will help you recognize the people in your life who impact your thinking and decision-making. As the author says, “The quest never ends.” The book offers quiet satisfaction and hope that all of life is good as long as the seeker never gives up.

Book excerpt: When Pastor Jonathan Larsen and his wife, Kim, find their faith and marriage tested by anonymous threats, stressful careers, and a laborious adoption process, they cry, pray and fight their way to a deeper level of trust and commitment. When he's elected bishop, a thirteen-year-old secret eats a hole in his soul. His passion for transparency contends with an equal desire not to hurt his family and admirers by admitting the long-ago deception. Struggling to apply forgiveness to himself in the same way he proclaims it to others, he is thwarted by his father's admonitions and the high expectations placed on church leaders. A seductive sister-in-law, a jealous colleague, and two clergy charged with sexual misconduct distract the bishop from his commitment to confess to Kim and church authorities. When the troubled bishop makes his decision, even he is surprised at the revelations that emerge. As you accompany these characters, you will travel to violence-ridden Liberia, rain soaked heights above Waimea Canyon on Kauai, and through the maze of freeways in Southern California. Together with them, religious or not, you will experience the challenge of living with integrity, compassion, and joy in a diverse and demanding twenty-first century culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1920s and early 1930s, the people of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia were living, thinking, and working as their forefathers had done for centuries. Their resistance to change extended to most areas of their lives, including their archaic way of speaking, the low position of women in the mountain home and society, and their outdated farming methods that drained the land of its productiveness each succeeding year. Their invariable response to suggestions for change was hostile: "This is the way my pa did it, and it was the way his pa did it. We ain't never done no different." Since those days--especially after the establishment of the Shenandoah National Park in 1935--vast changes have swept this primitive civilization away, and the picturesque mountaineer of story and legend has become a fading memory. Early in his ministry, Dr. Ribble worked as a missionary among these hardy but culturally-isolated Blue Ridge Mountain people. In his book Where Time Stood Still, he recounts delightful stories about the Blue Ridge Mountain folk, painting a vivid portrait of these mountaineers. A few of these stories involve the stereotypical hillbilly, such as shotgun weddings and illegal moonshining. On the whole, however, his stories paint a much more complete and sympathetic picture of these mountain people, whom he came to know well and for whom he came to feel great respect and affection.

Excerpt: "'Thusia, running the streets, was in danger of becoming too daring. She knew the town talked about her and she laughed at its gossip. In such a contest the rebel usually loses; in conspiring against smugness she ends by falling into the ranks of immorality. In Riverbank before the Civil War, the danger to reputation was even greater than it is now; morality was marked by stricter conventions. 'Thusia, despite her new dress and hat, did not linger downtown after meeting with David."

Book You re Not Gonna Believe This

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How would you like to join me on an unbelievable ride? Let us take a ride on a mystical wooden kiddie roller coaster as we travel thru my dash (you know, that line that separates, the date you were born and the date that says you, died) to, re-live my experiences, when I went knocking on Heavens door, starting at the early age of five years old, having to survive my first automobile accident. At sixteen, I drowned but was miraculously saved. Four years later I was in Vietnam, then had two major automobile accidents one before I was there in the WTC on the 93 bombing, then another before I was there on 9/11. After ten months at Ground Zero, I ended up with nineteen health ailments, one being bladder cancer. This will probably have you feel like youve been pushed back into that seat youre in and have you look to see if youre safely secured, as we go about feeling the remainder of those climbs, drops, curves and hoops with me. While were still on this journey, I will tell you about some of these most amazing surprising coincidences that had occurred to me (ones that I could never imagine, happening) and all because of this sudden change in me, that came about, hours later on September 11, 2001. Why, and more than, anything why me?
