Book Walter Ralegh

Download or read book Walter Ralegh written by Alan Gallay and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a Bancroft Prize-winning historian, a biography of the famed poet, courtier, and colonizer, showing how he laid the foundations of the English Empire Sir Walter Ralegh was a favorite of Queen Elizabeth. She showered him with estates and political appointments. He envisioned her becoming empress of a universal empire. She gave him the opportunity to lead the way. In Walter Ralegh, Alan Gallay shows that, while Ralegh may be best known for founding the failed Roanoke colony, his historical importance vastly exceeds that enterprise. Inspired by the mystical religious philosophy of hermeticism, Ralegh led English attempts to colonize in North America, South America, and Ireland. He believed that the answer to English fears of national decline resided overseas -- and that colonialism could be achieved without conquest. Gallay reveals how Ralegh launched the English Empire and an era of colonization that shaped Western history for centuries after his death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 400 years, the true story behind Sir Walter Ralegh's downfall, his conviction for high treason and his eventual beheading has been shrouded in mystery. Was he deliberately set up by the brilliant but untrustworthy Sir Robert Cecil? Why did his friend Lord Cobham denounce him at his trial? And how could this towering figure of the Elizabethan age be accused of conspiring with his old enemy Spain to overthrow the king? In Who Killed Sir Walter Ralegh? Richard Dale draws on his legal background to unravel the extraordinary plots and intrigues that marked the last months of Elizabeth's reign and the first weeks of James' succession. In the bitter struggle for position, wealth and royal favour, only the most ruthless and devious could hope to win, but would the dwarfish, hunchbacked Cecil eventually prevail over the swashbuckling Ralegh? And in the eyes of posterity, who was the real victor?

Book Walter Ralegh s History of the World and the Historical Culture of the Late Renaissance

Download or read book Walter Ralegh s History of the World and the Historical Culture of the Late Renaissance written by Nicholas Popper and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imprisoned in the Tower of London after the death of Queen Elizabeth in 1603, Sir Walter Ralegh spent seven years producing his massive History of the World. Created with the aid of a library of more than five hundred books that he was allowed to keep in his quarters, this incredible work of English vernacular would become a best seller, with nearly twenty editions, abridgments, and continuations issued in the years that followed. Nicholas Popper uses Ralegh’s History as a touchstone in this lively exploration of the culture of history writing and historical thinking in the late Renaissance. From Popper we learn why early modern Europeans ascribed heightened value to the study of the past and how scholars and statesmen began to see historical expertise as not just a foundation for political practice and theory, but as a means of advancing their power in the courts and councils of contemporary Europe. The rise of historical scholarship during this period encouraged the circulation of its methods to other disciplines, transforming Europe’s intellectual—and political—regimes. More than a mere study of Ralegh’s History of the World, Popper’s book reveals how the methods that historians devised to illuminate the past structured the dynamics of early modernity in Europe and England.

Book excerpt: "I have read Death of the Fox," writes O. B. Hardison, Director of The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D. C., "and feel that I have probably participated at the inception of a major literary event. The novel is a brilliant and unique work. I know of nothing quite like it in recent American fiction. It is wholly conversant with the fiber, texture, and grain of Elizabethan and Jacobean England. In its sweep it takes us from the arrival of the Tudors in 1485 all the way to October 29, 1618, when Ralegh was executed. It covers . . . the policy, the religious disputes, the warfare, the rivalries of various political factions, the magic of Queen Elizabeth and the crafty folly of James I, Essex and Bacon, Leicester and Sir Edward Coke, Marlow and Ben Jonson and Inigo Jones! Incredibly, it is all these, not only in broad sweep, but in an infinitude of jewel-like details, each meticulously exact, but at the same time adding up to a sort of literary mosaic, creating an artistic fabric more enchanting, more real than a whole portfolio of photographs."

Book The daring muse of the early Stuart funeral elegy

Download or read book The daring muse of the early Stuart funeral elegy written by James Doelman and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early Stuart funeral elegy was a copious and digressive genre, and exceptional deaths pressed elegists to stretch beyond the usual rhetoric of grief and commemoration. This book engages in a broad reading of the period’s rich trove of funeral elegies, in both manuscript and print, and by poets ranging from the canonical to the anonymous. The book stands apart from earlier studies by its greater focus upon the subjects of funeral elegies (rather than the poets), and how the particular circumstances of death and the immediate contexts affected the poetic response. Individual deaths are understood in relation to each other and other prominent events of the time. While the book covers the period 1603 to 1640, the 1620s stand out as a tumultuous decade in which the genre most fully engaged in matters of political controversy and satire.
