Book Landscape and Sustainability

Download or read book Landscape and Sustainability written by John Benson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2007-08-07 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book addresses the issue of sustainability from the point of view of landscape architecture, dealing with professional practices of planners, designers and landscape managers. This second edition contains updated and new material reflecting developments during the last five years and comprehensively addresses the relationship between landscape architecture and sustainability. Much in the text is underpinned by landscape ecology, in contrast to the idea of landscape as only appealing to the eye or aspiring cerebrally to be fine art. Landscape and Sustainability establishes that the sustainability agenda needs a new mindset among professionals: the driving question must always be ‘is it sustainable?’ Developing theory into practice, from the global to the local scale and from issues of policy and planning through to detailed design and implementation and on to long-term maintenance and management, the contributors raise and re-examine a complex array of research, policy and professional issues and agendas to contribute to the necessary ongoing debate about the future of both landscape and sustainability.

Book John Prentiss Benson

Download or read book John Prentiss Benson written by Nicholas Baker and published by . This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This clothbound, coffeetable book has over 90 full color plates of the work of John Prentiss Benson, an unsung Marine artist, who lived in New England from 1865 to 1947. There are currently hundreds of his undiscovered paintings at large. John Prentiss Benson was born in 1865 in Salem, Massachusetts. His youth was spent just blocks away from the seaport where ships of all kinds were a source of endless fascination. Artistic talent ran in the family, and his oldest brother, Frank, displayed such gifts that further study was encouraged. But when young John indicated he, too, would like to study art, parental caution took over. One artist in the family was enough. After receiving excellent training in Paris in 1888-89, John opened an architecture practice in New York City. Half of his professional life was spent as an architect, but he never lost his desire to paint. By 1925, he had closed his business, moved to Kittery, Maine, and become a full-time painter. His artwork sold readily in galleries, at exhibitions, and to visitors. Painting with great regularity every year until his death in 1947 at age 82, he created more than 750 canvases. Many remain unlocated. Part mystery, part treasure hunt, the search for still unlocated John P. Benson paintings is an ongoing quest.

Book Mr Benson

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Preston
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2004-08
  • ISBN : 9781573441940
  • Pages : 219 pages

Download or read book Mr Benson written by John Preston and published by . This book was released on 2004-08 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr. Benson is the compelling story of a young man’s quest for the perfect master. In a West Village leather bar, he finds wealthy, sophisticated, exacting Aristotle Benson, who leads him down the path of erotic enlightenment, teaching him to accept cruelty as love, anguish as affection, and ultimately, Mr. Benson as his master. If John Preston, the masterly, handsome author of more than 30 books, was himself a gay icon, his character Mr. Benson defined the culture of gay sex for an entire generation. When Mr. Benson appeared in the pre-AIDS early 1980s, its unabashed celebration of male sexuality made it a cult favorite among gay men, many of whom wore T-shirts declaring that they were "looking for Mr. Benson." The novel's fresh voice and insights into identity, desire, power, and love influenced a generation of writers and editors, including Anne Rice, Samuel Delany, Michael Lowenthal, Laura Antoniou, Joan Nestle, Michael Rowe, and Cecilia Tan. Mr. Benson was Preston's first novel and was followed by many more books from the proud, self-styled "pornographer."

Book The Working Class in Britain

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who made up the working class in Britain, who were the ordinary men and women and what were their aspirations? The first generation of postwar British labour historians tended to be preoccupied with working class activism. This texts attempts to chart not only this struggle, but to describe and analyse the rich and varied tapestry of working-class history as a whole. It demonstrates that "class" both existed and mattered although ordinary men and women had diverse lives and lifestyles. Professor Benson examines work, wages, incomes and the cost of living, family, kinship and community relations and the individual in the context of nation and class.
