Book What Endures

Download or read book What Endures written by John Vo and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike most childhoods, mine was far from being a happy one. My siblings and I, as well as the generation before us, were born at a time when warplanes, gunfire, foreign men in uniform, constant evacuations, and locals hiding under bunkers or war tunnels were commonplace. Now whenever I see playgrounds that are lush with trees and green grasses and filled with children on swings who are laughing while being pushed by their parents, I cannot help but feel a tinge of envy. They are so young, yet already they are having the time of their lives. As a child, I never imagined such scenarios to be remotely possible. Even the idea of playing and having fun were strange to me. I was filled with questions, many of which were answered much, much later.

Book Hope Endures

  • Author : Colette Livermore
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster

  • ISBN : 1439109591
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Hope Endures written by Colette Livermore and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-12-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The searing memoir of an extraordinary woman who served as a nun for eleven years in Mother Teresa's order, Hope Endures is a compelling chronicle of idealistic determination, rigid discipline, and shattering disillusionment. InÊher life's journey from certainty to doubt, Colette Livermore enters the Missionaries of Charity order in 1973 with unwavering faith and total surrender ofÊher will and intellect after seeing a documentary on the order's work in India. Only eighteen at the time, Livermore has been studying to enter medical school -- a lifelong goal -- but virtually overnight severs her many ties with family, friends, and the life she's known in beautiful, rural New South Wales in order to train as a sister to aid the poor. In the process, she also gives herself over to the order's unexpectedly severe, ascetic regime, which demands blind obedience and submission. Given the religious name Sister Tobit, Livermore serves in some of the poorest places in the world -- the garbage dump slums of Manila, Papua New Guinea, and Calcutta -- bringing hope and care to people who are desperately ill, hungry, abandoned, and even dying, and comforting whomever she can. Although she draws inspiration and strength from her humanitarian work, Livermore and other nuns risk their own physical health, as they are sent to dangerous areas while being unschooled in the languages and cultures, untrained in medical care, and sometimes unprotected by vaccines. Livermore herself succumbs to bouts of drug-resistant cerebral malaria that almost kill her and to a new strain of hepatitis. Over time she also beginsÊto notice that the order's rigid insistence on unquestioning obedience harms the young sisters mentally, emotionally, and spiritually -- and she experiences a terrible inner struggle to find the right path for herself. As she tries to respond to the suffering around her, she often falls into an incomprehensible conflict between her vow to obey and her vow to serve, between religious strictures and the practice of compassion, between authority and personal conscience. Pressured to stay with the order by Mother Teresa and other superiors, as well as by the younger nuns, Livermore nonetheless decides to leave at age thirty and attain her medical degree, continuing to take health care and relief to impoverished people in remote areas -- the isolated aboriginal communities of the Outback and war-torn East Timor. Even as she serves others as a medical doctor, she continues in a crisis of faith thatÊeventually leads her to become an agnostic. Hope Endures is the eye-opening, deeply affecting story of a brave woman's search for meaning in a world that is rent with tragedies and contradictions. It is also an unflinching critique of any faith that insists on blind obedience. For true hope to endure, Dr. Livermore demonstrates, we must always strive to question, to face the hard truths, and to discover the courage to follow our convictions.

Download or read book A Sultanate that Endures written by Joseph A. Kéchichian and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-08 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Qaboos bin Sa'id, Sultan of Oman from 1970 until his death in 2020, marked Omani history. He belonged to that very small circle of leaders who solemnized their time in power, transforming the Sultanate by empowering generations of citizens to lead constructive and fulfilling lives. Joseph Kéchichian provides a full assessment of the fourteenth Al Sa'id dynasty sovereign, setting out his vision for what was then a relatively isolated nation, championing the necessity for alliances, investing in people as well as the land, and founding key institutions that evolved over five decades. These achievements took time to materialize as Qaboos preserved Al Sa'id rule, governed wisely, avoided internal and external political entanglements, and passed the torch to his successor Haitham bin Tariq, who validated Al Sa'id authority upon becoming Sultan. A Sultanate that Endures is a companion volume to Oman and the World: The Emergence of an Independent Foreign Policy (RAND, 1995). It highlights Omani history, with a particular focus on the religious creed Ibadhiyyah that embraces tolerance and prevents injustice. The transition from a theocracy to a monarchy that established dynastic rule is discussed in the context of the Sultanate's millennial history, affirming its rulers' legitimacy and citizen acceptance. The author evaluates how Ibadhiyyah and its traditions formed the gist of the Sultanate's foreign policies, concentrating on ties with predominantly Muslim-inhabited countries, engagement with the African Continent, its links with the Arab Gulf region, and appraising Omani diplomacy with key Asian and Western countries. The study closes with a preliminary analysis of the transition to Sultan Haitham, evaluates his primary appointments, and reviews his declared priorities for the nation. Future domestic and foreign policy challenges that may confront Omanis concludes the volume.

Download or read book Oh but He That Endures written by John S. Morris and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2024-06-06 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is about an illusion of a young fellow who happens to be me, who thought that he was the only one who had a mind-boggling problem that was not like his. As it was during my childhood, I had to contend with the reality of being very nearsighted. During that time, I used to think that I was the little Casanova that lived on my street whose ambition was to impress my peers and friends. But when the optometrist prescribed some thick-lens glasses to me to correct my sight, the playing field became uneven, and my image was put on hold. It was after my vision was somewhat corrected that I was able to navigate through the critics and the jokers coming from my running buddies. Overall, my journey as a child became very interesting. During the beginning of my years of puberty, I had one of the worst experiences: being bullied, which took me to a dark place in my life. I must confess that during that time, I was guilty of not sharing this with my family or anyone else. After I overcame being bullied, my life as a child took on a whole new perspective. When I was relinquished from that bully, I was convinced in my mind right then that a good prayer life works when nothing else will. The reason why I invested in this story is because I wanted others to know that if I could overcome them, so can they. During my early years, I had my share of crisis and didn’t know at that time how to deal with them. Yes, it wasn’t long thereafter that I made up in my mind that I was going to put my trust in someone who is much stronger and much wiser than me. After I made that kind of resolve in my life, it was then that I became a dreamer. Even after I became an adult, that resolution became much stronger. You will have to read this story in order to understand what I am saying. Let me try to encourage you to know that I am a witness to the fact that with persistence, some resolutions do come sooner than others. From my childhood into my adult life, I never stopped chasing after my dream. Actually, the reason why I decided to start writing is because I wanted to defy the odds of doing what my family and friends as well as my doctor said concerning me securing a driver’s license to drive a car.

The Japanese have attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii by air, President Roosevelt has just announced. The attack also was made on all Naval and Military activities on the principal island, Oahu. The following day, the President made his historic speech to Congress, using language that would galvanize a shocked nation and propel America into war. • Author : Wallace J. Thies

Download or read book Why NATO Endures written by Wallace J. Thies and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-29 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why NATO Endures examines military alliances and their role in international relations, developing two themes. The first is that the Atlantic Alliance, also known as NATO, has become something very different from virtually all pre-1939 alliances and many contemporary alliances. The members of early alliances frequently feared their allies as much if not more than their enemies, viewing them as temporary accomplices and future rivals. In contrast, NATO members were almost all democracies that encouraged each other to grow stronger. The book's second theme is that NATO, as an alliance of democracies, has developed hidden strengths that have allowed it to endure for roughly 60 years, unlike most other alliances, which often broke apart within a few years. Democracies can and do disagree with one another, but they do not fear each other. They also need the approval of other democracies as they conduct their foreign policies. These traits constitute built-in, self-healing tendencies, which is why NATO endures.
