Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paperback edition of the Winner of three 2005 Catholic Press Association Books Awards! Design and Production First Place. As the Mother of God, Mary surpasses all other humans and yet is united with all who are to be saved. Here you will find a magnificent and inspiring collection of colorful images, meditations, and prayers about and for Mary, both painted and written. Many of McGraths paintings in this collection are the result of his loving fascination with Black Madonnas, which have inspired pilgrims, saints, and sin-sick souls for centuries. Combined with Richard Fragomenis poetic and candid prayers, these images of Mary speak directly to all people who struggle to find meaning and joy in a world filled with crisis, divisiveness, and insecurity. They speak, too, to the artistic, creative soul in all of us, which longs to see things in new and challenging ways while holding on to the history and traditions of our Catholic heritage.

Book O Mother Where Art Thou

Download or read book O Mother Where Art Thou written by Julie Kelso and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Kelso, the Book of Chronicles silences women in specific ways, most radically through their association with maternity. Drawing on the work of two feminist philosophers, Luce Irigaray and Michelle Boulous Walker, she argues that we may discern two principal strategies of silencing women in Chronicles: disavowal and repression of the maternal body. In its simplest form, the silencing of women takes place through both an explicit and implicit strategy of excluding them from the central action. Largely banished from the central action, they are hardly able to contribute to the production of Israel s past. On a more complex level, however, women are most effectively silenced through their association with maternity, because the maternal body is both disavowed and repressed in Chronicles. The association of women with maternity, along with the disavowal and repression of the maternal body as origin of the masculine subject, effects and guarantees the silence of the feminine, enabling man to imagine himself as sole producer of his world. These strategies of silencing the feminine need to be understood in relation to the relative absence of women from the narrative world of Chronicles. Kelso argues that Chronicles depends on the absence and silence of women for its imaginary coherence. This argument is enabled by Irigarayan theory. But more importantly, Kelso suggests that Irigaray also offers us a viable mode (not method) of reading, writing, listening, and speaking as woman (whatever that might mean), in relation to the so-called origins of western culture, specifically the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament. She argues that Irigaray enables a not only rigorous, feminist critique of patriarchy and its many texts, but also, somewhat more charitably, a mode of reading that enables women to read the past differently, seeking out what remains to be discovered, especially the forgotten future in the past.

Book Four Views on the Historical Adam

Download or read book Four Views on the Historical Adam written by Denis Lamoureux and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2013-12-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Were the biblical Adam and Eve historical figures, or are the early events described in Genesis primarily symbolic in nature? Behind the debate of a historical Adam is the age-old debate about evolution and the agreement between Scripture and science. With an introduction that outlines the history and main points of every viewpoint from Darwinism to Young Earth Creationism, this book then clearly outlines four primary views on Adam held by evangelical Christians. Contributors include Denis O. Lamoureux, John H. Walton, C. John Collins, and William Barrick. Each focuses his essay on answering the following questions: What is the biblical case for your viewpoint, and how do you reconcile it both with modern science and with passages and potential interpretations that seem to counter it? In what ways is your view more theologically consistent and coherent than other views? What are the implications of your view for the spiritual life and public witness of the church and individual believers, and how is your view a healthier alternative for both? This book allows each contributor to not only present the case for his view, but also to critique and respond to the critiques of the other contributors, allowing you to compare their beliefs in an open forum setting to see where they overlap and where they differ. Concluding reflections by pastor-scholars Gregory A. Boyd and Philip Graham Ryken highlight the significance of the topic in the faith of everyday believers. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Book excerpt: Thou Art That is a compilation of previously uncollected essays and lectures by Joseph Campbell that focus on the Judeo-Christian tradition. Campbell explores common religious symbols, reexamining and reinterpreting them in the context of his remarkable knowledge of world mythology.Campbell believed that society often confuses the literal and metaphorical interpretations of religious stories and symbols. In this collection, he eloquently reestablishes these symbols as a means to enhance spiritual understanding and mystical revelation. With characteristic verve, he ranges from rich storytelling to insightful comparative scholarship. Included is editor Eugene Kennedy's classic interview with Campbell in the New York Times Magazine, which originally brought the scholar to the attention of the public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follow the author’s odyssey of the mind in his endless search for God and meaning in life, as well as his plea for moral action in the uncertainty, discord, and chaos of a world that appears callous and cruel and is prone to political exploitation of vulnerable people, cultures, and countries of our shared planet. Although the manuscript views organized religion, religious hypocrisy, and social injustice through a microscope, this book is spiritual and life-affirming while recognizing the inherent impermanence of the universe and humanity’s collective and individual imprint. You can read short stories with a nontraditional take on John the Baptist and Jesus; shorter poems dealing with Tourette syndrome, aging, and suicide; religious conformity and hypocrisy in the context of finding a moral compass that guides humans down a path of right actions, responsibility, and compassion in a philosophical essay; and a substantial poem that unfolds a panoramic social and political critic of the American experiment through the dialogue of a dreaming man in successive encounters with Crowfoot, Black Elk, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt, Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, Christ, and the Buddha.

Book Lucifer How Art Thou Fallen

Download or read book Lucifer How Art Thou Fallen written by Ellen G. White and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation from the Spirit of Prophecy (the writings of Ellen G. White) covers the history of Lucifer from his creation to his fall, thru his warfare on earth, down to his final destruction. The purpose of this book is not to exalt Satan, but rather to show his character works, and methods as he wars against God, Christ, and the Church. As the Apostle Paul warned, "Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices" (2 Corinthians 2:11), we are vulnerable in our ignorance. God's people need to be aware of the serpent's cunning, so as not to fall under his power and influence. That knowledge alone, however, will not keep us safe. We must "Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." (Ephesians 6:11) The tremendous amount of material on this subject presented a challenge in compiling that which could tell the high points of the history, provide the best possible lessons and warnings for God's people, extend hope and encouragement for these last days (when Satan and his hosts are making "war with the remnant"), while keeping it within the confines of the cover of this small volume. Our hope and prayer is that we have succeeded in this challenge, presenting the reader with a priceless aid in preparation for earth's final conflict, as well as the day-to-day trials and struggles with the powers of darkness. The Lord be magnified!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in the second half of the nineteenth century, in the American and Canadian West and in Victorian England, The Last Crossing is a sweeping tale of interwoven lives and stories Charles and Addington Gaunt must find their brother Simon, who has gone missing in the wilds of the American West. Charles, a disillusioned artist, and Addington, a disgraced military captain, enlist the services of a guide to lead them on their journey across a difficult and unknown landscape. This is the enigmatic Jerry Potts, half Blackfoot, half Scottish, who suffers his own painful past. The party grows to include Caleb Ayto, a sycophantic American journalist, and Lucy Stoveall, a wise and beautiful woman who travels in the hope of avenging her sister’s vicious murder. Later, the group is joined by Custis Straw, a Civil War veteran searching for salvation, and Custis’s friend and protector Aloysius Dooley, a saloon-keeper. This unlikely posse becomes entangled in an unfolding drama that forces each person to come to terms with his own demons. The Last Crossing contains many haunting scenes – among them, a bear hunt at dawn, the meeting of a Métis caravan, the discovery of an Indian village decimated by smallpox, a sharpshooter’s devastating annihilation of his prey, a young boy’s last memory of his mother. Vanderhaeghe links the hallowed colleges of Oxford and the pleasure houses of London to the treacherous Montana plains; and the rough trading posts of the Canadian wilderness to the heart of Indian folklore. At the novel’s centre is an unusual and moving love story. The Last Crossing is Guy Vanderhaeghe’s most powerful novel to date. It is a novel of harshness and redemption, an epic masterpiece, rich with unforgettable characters and vividly described events, that solidifies his place as one of Canada’s premier storytellers.

You will discover your own truth, and how everyone, everywhere, every day has opportunities to make a positive difference. Margie always said, “We are the hands and fingers of God, but we have to use them.” Praise for LOVE, CARE AND SHARE I started reading Love, Care and Share just after 7pm and it’s now 9:20pm. I was deeply drawn into it and it was like being with Margie again, only through your eyes and words. For these past few hours she “Lived” again. Thank you for that. The raw emotion expressed comes through vividly, about a Son’s Love for his Mother bringing her life into meaningful events and wanting her to be remembered as someone many of us Loved. I have often said to others that we go through life never really seeing others and ourselves but for our outer shells/bodies, instead of seeing the real entity that we are; which is the Soul. Margie saw the Soul and therefore was able to love as she did. - Chris Price I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed reading about your Mom in Love, Care and Share. It was amazing and the stories just made me sorry I didn’t know her myself. She must have had the biggest, kindest heart. Her willingness to give her time and her home and anything else which was needed made her very special indeed. You must miss her terribly. Your writing was lovely and by the end, I felt as though I knew all of you in a way I hadn’t before. Thank you for sharing it with me my friend. - Love, Sherry

It abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit" (John 12:24) There is more to being a Christian soldier than attending Weekly Church Programmes. Brokenness is a pre-requisite for being a true Christian Soldier. This book teaches you result-oriented ways of escaping from spiritual stagnancy and its attendant frustrations. Brokenness is a good Spiritual thermometer for every child of God because at the end of the day, the requirement is that "He must increase, But I must decrease" (John 3:30) Why? So "that you may be filled with all the fullness of God" (Eph 3:19). You are encouraged by the Spirit of God, to read and study this book so that you can be at the spiritual height God expects you to be and not remain a Lilliputan all through your life. This is a challenge worth taking.
