Book The Navajos Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Navajos Classic Reprint written by Oscar H. Lipps and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navajos Little Histories of North American Indians is designed to give in plain and simple form a concise and authentic history of the North American Indians by tribes. So far, most of the literature giving relia ble accounts of the life, manners, customs, habits, religion, mythology, arts, and crafts of the various Indian tribes of our country is contained chiefly in government reports and in scientific works which are either not readily accessible to the reading public, or are too scientific and technical to be enjoyable and entertaining to the average general reader. The aim, then, is a popular and reliable little history of our North American Indians which will, in a measure, satisfy the ever increasing desire on the part of Americans for a more intimate knowledge of the first of all Americans. It has not been the intention to present in this little book - the first of the series - any new facts concerning the Navajos, but rather to bring together the facts already known of the tribe. As a matter of fact, few books have been published in England which furnish more than the scantiest details concerning the Red Race, and these are in general scarce, and, when obtained, Of doubtful scientific value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Indians, North of Mexico In the second place, it is readily to he remarked that interest in the study, both cultural and descriptive, of this branch of the world's family, is, particularly in America, constantly increasing. As the original data disappear, so do new generations realise the value of What has passed, and every portion of history or folklore thus preserved and studied becomes to the highest degree valuable and interesting. Many Americans of to - day, especially those of the middle and far west, may be direct descendants of those hardy pioneers or frontiers men who were, but a few years since, either friends or foes of the original inhabitants of the lands they now occupy. These or like instances are, for the most part, well within the memory of the living, and this interest, already well advanced, will continually develop. Book The Genesis of the American Indian Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Genesis of the American Indian Classic Reprint written by Ales Hrdlicka and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genesis of the American Indian Without discussing any of the speculations connected with the subject, we will approach directly the several questions into which this problem resolves itself. The foremost of these is that of the unity or plurality of the Indian race. We know that the aboriginal population of America was divided into a great many tribes and even a number of what might be called nations, often hostile to one another; we have learned that there were many different languages and dialects, remarkable differences in culture and the material results of culture, and also marked differences in the physiognomy, color, details of physique, and in the behavior of the different groups of Indians - all of which would seem to indicate that there might have existed some, if not considerable, racial diversity. But if these matters are subjected to careful and comprehensive scrutiny, we' find that the various differences presented by the Indians are Often more apparent than real; that actual and important differences are in no case of suffi cient weight to permit of any racial dissociation on that basis; and that the more substantial differences which exist between the tribes are everywhere underlaid by fundamental similarities and identities that outweigh them and which speak strongly not only against any plurality of race on the American continent but for the general original unity of the Indians.
