Download or read book Life of the Party written by Bert Kreischer and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of outrageous stories by the standup comic, TV host, and inspiration for the movie National Lampoon's Van Wilder Bert Kreischer doesn't know how to say "no." If he did, he wouldn't have gotten himself mixed up with a group of Russian mobsters on a class trip to Moscow, earning him his nickname: "The Machine." He wouldn't have wrestled with a bear or swum with sharks on national television. He wouldn't have (possibly) smoked PCP with a star of Saturday Night Live. And he wouldn't have been named the Number One Partier in the Nation by Rolling Stone, inspired the movie National Lampoon's Van Wilder, or performed standup to sellout crowds across the country. The stories Kreischer shares in Life of the Party are a guidebook on how not to grow up. From his fraternity days at Florida State University, to his rise as a standup, to his marriage and first brushes with fatherhood, Kreischer shows you a path that may not lead you to maturity or personal growth. But it will lead you to a shitload of fun.

Book The Man Who Loved Children

Download or read book The Man Who Loved Children written by Christina Stead and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2012-10-23 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This crazy, gorgeous family novel” written at the end of the Great Depression “is one of the great literary achievements of the twentieth century” (Jonathan Franzen, The New York Times). First published in 1940, The Man Who Loved Children was rediscovered in 1965 thanks to the poet Randall Jarrell’s eloquent introduction (included in this ebook edition), which compares Christina Stead to Leo Tolstoy. Today, it stands as a masterpiece of dysfunctional family life. In a country crippled by the Great Depression, Sam and Henny Pollit have too much—too much contempt for one another, too many children, too much strain under endless obligation. Flush with ego and chilling charisma, Sam torments and manipulates his children in an esoteric world of his own imagining. Henny looks on desperately, all too aware of the madness at the root of her husband’s behavior. And Louie, the damaged, precocious adolescent girl at the center of their clashes, is the “ugly duckling” whose struggle will transfix contemporary readers. Named one of the best novels of the twentieth century by Newsweek, Stead’s semiautobiographical work reads like a Depression-era The Glass Castle. In the New York Times, Jonathan Franzen wrote of this classic, “I carry it in my head the way I carry childhood memories; the scenes are of such precise horror and comedy that I feel I didn’t read the book so much as live it.”

  • Author : Steve Estes
  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press
  • Release : 2006-03-08
  • ISBN : 080787633X
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book I Am a Man written by Steve Estes and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2006-03-08 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The civil rights movement was first and foremost a struggle for racial equality, but questions of gender lay deeply embedded within this struggle. Steve Estes explores key groups, leaders, and events in the movement to understand how activists used race and manhood to articulate their visions of what American society should be. Estes demonstrates that, at crucial turning points in the movement, both segregationists and civil rights activists harnessed masculinist rhetoric, tapping into implicit assumptions about race, gender, and sexuality. Estes begins with an analysis of the role of black men in World War II and then examines the segregationists, who demonized black male sexuality and galvanized white men behind the ideal of southern honor. He then explores the militant new models of manhood espoused by civil rights activists such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., and groups such as the Nation of Islam, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and the Black Panther Party. Reliance on masculinist organizing strategies had both positive and negative consequences, Estes concludes. Tracing these strategies from the integration of the U.S. military in the 1940s through the Million Man March in the 1990s, he shows that masculinism rallied men to action but left unchallenged many of the patriarchal assumptions that underlay American society.

Book Manchild in the Promised Land

Download or read book Manchild in the Promised Land written by Claude Brown and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-01-03 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manchild in the Promised Landis indeed one of the most remarkable autobiographies of our time. This thinly fictionalized account of Claude Brown's childhood as a hardened, streetwise criminal trying to survive the toughest streets of Harlem has been heralded as the definitive account of everyday life for the first generation of African Americans raised in the Northern ghettos of the 1940s and 1950s. When the book was first published in 1965, it was praised for its realistic portrayal of Harlem - the children, young people, hardworking parents; the hustlers, drug dealers, prostitutes, and numbers runners; the police; the violence, sex, and humour. The book continues to resonate generations later, not only because of its fierce and dignified anger, not only because the struggles of urban youth are as deeply felt today as they were in Brown's time, but also because the book is affirmative and inspiring. Here is the story about the one who "made it," the boy who kept landing on his feet and became a man.

Book Manchild 6 Bye Bye Punk Rock Hello Adulthood

Download or read book Manchild 6 Bye Bye Punk Rock Hello Adulthood written by Brian Walsby and published by To Live A Lie Records. This book was released on with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After finally being suckered into fatherhood with the birth of his daughter Willow, Brian Walsby finally says, "goodbye punk rock, hello adulthood" with the release of MANCHILD 6. Joining the ride is new publisher Will Butler of To Live a Lie Records. Will somehow believed in Brian enough to spend his own money on someone who obviously is out of touch, has betrayed the scene (any scene, take your pick) and has more or less moved on. Or has he? Despite the nonstop demands of diapers, real life responsibilities and taking the six year old Noble to school most of the time Brian has still somehow found precious time in coming up with new work. Filling out MANCHILD 6 are exclusive interviews straight from Brian's blog (INTROVERTED LOUDMOUTH) from the last couple of years with lengthy interviews with Richmond's TANNON PENLAND (LOINCLOTH), Raleigh's own incredible songwriter KENNY ROBY, The split personality of SCOTT RADINSKY (PULLEY, TEN FOOT POLE, SCARED STRAIGHT) , guitarist for the DESCENDENTS and ALL STEPHEN EGERTON and a lengthy tour diary on the road with MELVINS right before Willow was born. Lots of good reading. So if you are at all interested in punk rock, fatherhood, MELVINS, potshots at people who deserve it, Mad magazine type satire and all of the other things that Brian Walsby is known for, MANCHILD 6 is a must have and a fine addition to a growing collection of hard work.
