Download or read book Whittling a New Face in the Dark written by D. J. Dolack and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. WHITTLING A NEW FACE IN THE DARK is a call to arms for language to rise above its inadequacy. DJ Dolack's poems are born from moments we must work hard to forget: the child's first funeral dirge; an empty, fluorescent-lit gas station in winter; at the bar, two drinks too far, ashamed and yet too aware of our surroundings. The speakers in this debut collection live in fear that the intimacy of solitude is indeed pornographic. Meanwhile, Dolack's lines are laced with a macabre, needle-sharp humor offering hymns of affliction, loss, and light: no matter the darkness, the pearl-handled whittling knife moves to do its job. "The poems in Dolack's scrupulously crafted debut are determined to make something distinctive and even beautiful out of their speaker's sense of apartness from this world and its fellow occupants. That they manage to do so despite persistent doubts that words can adequately bridge that apartness as they 'fumble forth / a wet mess like a soft // but definite new fawn' makes WHITTLING A NEW FACE IN THE DARK a complex, hard-won, and ultimately affirming achievement." Timothy Donnelly "Dolack's voice is steadfast, unflappable he never apologizes for the conditions under which our affection must be born. What is the difference between love and admiration? These poems intimate: Be grateful you are alive, even though it is hard. Love your chaotic home. WHITTLING A NEW FACE IN THE DARK 'is / what's come of / people giving it to people straight.'" Paige Ackerson-Kiely "DJ Dolack's mouth is 'pistol-clean...oiled' so he can sing, 'the heart's animal / heaves up terrific things and rests / against the ribcage like a fighter been already cut.' These exquisites will burrow so deep inside your chest they will steal your breath. Dolack writes beyond consequence. Yeah. He's fearless." Peter Jay Shippy"
Download or read book Ugly Time written by Sarah Galvin and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Sarah Galvin is here, she's queer, and she would like to talk about something else for a moment After taking a break from poetry to write The Best Party of Our Lives, a book of essays about gay marriages, Galvin's back with her second book of poems. In UGLY TIME, developers are transforming her hometown into a white-washed, glass box jungle. She's barely making rent. Her girlfriend just threw her heart in the garbage. Sex with strangers she meets on the internet is great and then empty and then great and then empty again. The 21st century is changing at hyperspeed, and it seems as if no one has time to talk about an old Kate Bush album or to praise "the patron saint of blowing up rotisserie chickens with fireworks" like they use to. But who's that beautiful person dressed head-to-toe in gold velvet? Did she just put Roy Orbison on the jukebox? Could love still be possible in the time of gentrification? And if so, does it redeem human suffering, sort of like, as Galvin writes, when "you step in human shit / while filming porn, / and notice the cherry petals / floating around you like sparks?" In a series of hilarious, tender, hyperreal poems, Galvin explores the paradox of trying to settle down--even for just a second--in a state of permanent impermanence.
Download or read book Community Garden for Lonely Girls written by Christine Shan Shan Hou and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Christine Shan Shan Hou's newest collection of poems, COMMUNITY GARDEN FOR LONELY GIRLS depicts a journey that traverses imagined histories and various states of consciousness. In Hou's poems, "the now moves with such glacial intensity"--folkloric myth and cultural detail are weaved together in animated modulation. These poems assert that desire for the unknown is pertinent to understanding one's identity and survival: "I know I could die, but if / I could be anything // I would be an aquarium full of / colorful fish and deep // breathing, / You know // like nude and / without age." Like a feminist spiritual quest or the act of a messenger delivering consequential information to a participant community, Hou's poems shape shift while simultaneously evoking its changeability: "I open my legs and a saint comes out / like a tiny blessing." Here, the subtle, gross, and causal body get in alignment despite the complexities and controversies of living a life. "Enough dilly-dallying. The love is coming."

Download or read book Above the Law written by Tim Green and published by Hachette+ORM. This book was released on 2008-10-17 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers last saw Casey Jordan in The Letter of the Law, where she defended her law professor for the grisly murder of a student only to discover he was guilty. After, Casey left her high-powered practice and wealthy husband and opened a legal aid clinic. When an illegal Mexican immigrant is shot on a ranch outside Dallas, it makes the news, not because of the immigrant, but because of the shooter, Senator Tucker Dean. It looks like a hunting accident, and the well-loved young Senator spins the disaster artfully with his tearful press conference. . . until the sister in law of the victim steps forward with another tale. The senator's wife was regularly visiting the victim, so Casey theorizes he was shot by the husband for revenge. When INS takes the victim's daughter away and tries to deport his wife, it looks like a cover-up of epic proportions. Casey approaches the D.A.'s office with information, only to discover that no prosecutor will take on this case. The senator is powerful and on track for a presidential nomination in a few years, so no one wants to tangle with him. Casey is determined to see the truth come out. If the state won't prosecute a murderer, she will sue him in civil court on behalf of the mother. But this popular senator is wily, vindictive, and dangerous. What will happen to Casey when she goes up against a man who seems above the law?

Download or read book Hospital of the Transfiguration written by Stanislaw Lem and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An early realist novel by Stanisław Lem, taking place in a Polish psychiatric hospital during World War II. Taking place within the confines of a psychiatric hospital, Stanisław Lem's The Hospital of the Transfiguration tells the story of a young doctor working in a Polish asylum during World War II. At first the asylum seems like a bucolic refuge, but a series of sinister encounters and incidents reveal an underlying brutality. The doctor begins to seek relief in the strange conversation of the poet Sekulowski, who is posing as a patient in a bid for safety from the occupying German forces. Meanwhile, Resistance fighters stockpile weapons in the surrounding woods. A very early work by Lem, The Hospital of the Transfiguration is partly autobiographical, drawing on the author's experiences as a medical student. Written in 1948, it was suppressed by Polish censors and not published until 1955. The censorship of this realist novel is partly what led Lem to focus on science fiction and nonfiction for the rest of his career.
