Book excerpt: In this “powerful debut novel,” an American relief worker falls in love with the Ivory Coast as the country descends into civil war (St. Louis Post-Dispatch). In an Ivory Coast village where Christians and Muslims are squaring off for war, against a backdrop of bloody conflict and vibrant African life, Jack Diaz—an American relief worker—and Mamadou, his village guardian, learn that hate knows no color and that true heroism waits where we least expect it. During lulls in the violence, Jack learns the cycles of Africa—of hunting in the rain forest, cultivating the yam, and navigating the nuances of the language; of witchcraft, storytelling, and chivalry. Despite the omnipresence of AIDS, he courts a stunning Peul girl, meets his neighbor’s wife in the darkened forest, and desperately pursues the village flirt. Still, Jack spends many nights alone in his hut, longing for love in a place where his skin color excludes him. Brimming with dangerous passions and the pressures of life in a time of war, Whiteman is a stunning debut and a tale of desire, isolation, humor, action, and fear.

Book Paul Whiteman

Download or read book Paul Whiteman written by Don Rayno and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-12-19 with total page 894 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a career that spanned 60 years, Paul Whiteman changed the landscape of American music, beginning with his million-selling recordings in the early 1920s of “Whispering,” “Japanese Sandman,” and “Three O’Clock in the Morning.” Whiteman would then introduce “symphonic jazz,” a powerful blend of the classical and jazz idioms that represented a whole new approach to modern American music, influencing generations of bandleaders and composers. While some hold that at the close of the Roaring Twenties Whiteman’s musical hegemony quickly waned, Don Rayno illustrates in this second volume of Paul Whiteman: Pioneer in American Music how much of a dominant figure Whiteman remained. A major figure on the American music scene for decades to come, he would continue to lead critically-acclaimed orchestras, filling theaters and concert halls alike and diligently seeking out and nurturing musical talent on the largest scale of any orchestra leader in the 20th century. In this second volume of Rayno’s magisterial treatment of the life and music of this remarkable maestro, Whiteman’s career during the second half of his life is explored in the fullest detail, as Whiteman conquers the worlds of theater and vaudeville, the concert hall, radio, motion pictures, and television, winning accolades in all of them. Through hundreds of interviews, extensive documentation, and exhaustive research of over nearly three decades, a portrait emerges of one of American music’s most important musical figures during the last century. Rayno paints a stunning portrait of Whiteman’s considerable accomplishments and far-reaching influence.

Book The Whiteman Scenario

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the eve of the Nixon resignation, the Soviet Union takes an action that elevates the Strategic Air Command and the North American Air Defense Command to just short of full combat alert status. Under normal circumstances, there would be a direct escalation of responses on both sides that could take us to the brink of nuclear launch. On this evening, though, there is an uncharacteristic hesitation on the part of normally hawkish US leadership. Through riveting narrative the story shows that the hesitation was a reluctance to break an iron clad do not disturb order from the President. A reluctance based in the fear that the event MUST have a rational explanation - an explanation that will vanish in a conflagration of nuclear exchanges if Nixon, in his depressed and panicked state, interprets the event as an attack (and a way out of the Watergate debacle.) The actions of an observant off-duty missile launch officer cause the Joint Chiefs and SAC commanders to back down from an immanent launch. The story is based on a real event and documented evidence that during the Yom Kippur war it was Kissinger, and not Nixon, who handled elevation in DefCon and preparedness. Nixon, it is reported, told Kissinger to handle it. Im dying. Theyre trying to kill me. This was in reference to the Watergate press feeding frenzy that had pushed Nixon to the point of emotional collapse. The Secret Service agent on duty was ordered to lock the door from Nixons Camp David office to the swimming pool for fear he might try to drown himself. The story compresses a series of many such actual events into the evening before the resignation.

Book King of Jazz

Download or read book King of Jazz written by James Layton and published by Media History Digital Library. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "King of Jazz: Paul Whiteman's Technicolor Revue" tells the story of the making, release, and restoration of Universal s 1930 Technicolor musical extravaganza King of Jazz. Authors James Layton and David Pierce have uncovered original artwork, studio production files, behind-the-scenes photographs, personal papers, unpublished interviews, and a host of other previously unseen documentation. The book offers a richly illustrated narrative of the film's production, with broader context on its diverse musical and theatrical influences. The story concludes with an in-depth look at the challenges Universal overcame in restoring the film in 2016. Additionally, the book's appendix provides a comprehensive guide to all of the film's performers, music, alternate versions, and deleted scenes. "King of Jazz" was one of the most ambitious films ever to emerge from Hollywood. Just as movie musicals were being invented in 1929, Universal Pictures brought together Paul Whiteman, leader of the country s top dance orchestra; John Murray Anderson, director of spectacular Broadway revues; a top ensemble of dancers and singers; early Technicolor; and a near unlimited budget. The film s highlights include a dazzling interpretation of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, which Whiteman had introduced to the public in 1924; Walter Lantz's A Fable in Jazz, the first cartoon in Technicolor; and Anderson's grand finale The Melting Pot of Music, a visualization of popular music's many influences and styles. The film is not only a unique document of Anderson's theatrical vision and Whiteman's band at its peak, but also of several of America s leading performers of the late 1920s, including Bing Crosby in his first screen appearance, and the Russell Markert Dancers, who would soon become Radio City Music Hall's famous Rockettes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Reconciliation is a key theme in Craig Smith's 'Whiteman's Gospel.' Pay particular attention to Chapter 3, 'Christianity & Indian History.' I was so moved by this chapter several years ago that it inspired me to write my own book. Very little is written about what the Church has done to Indian people. When we think of atrocities that were experienced by Native Americans, we tend to think that it was primarily the U.S. government that was responsible. Such was not the case, for in many instances, the Church has been responsible for genocide, sexual abuse, and kidnapping. We must face up to these facts before reconciliation can begin, and Mr. Smith's book accomplishes just that. I speak not as an outsider but as a fellow minister to Native Americans. For three years I have worked among the Omaha and Winnebago Tribes and I can tell you that 'Whiteman's Gospel' is very factual, relevant, and much needed. Indian people rank at the bottom in academics, their young people commit suicide at rates 5 times higher than the general population, and medical facilites are either non-existent, or in disrepair. Clearly, these people are in distress and only the Church can meet many of their needs. Craig Smith's book makes those needs known. If you don't know anything about Native American ministry, then 'Whiteman's Gospel' is a book that you must read"--Amazon.com.
