Download or read book Punk Rock So What written by Roger Sabin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's now over twenty years since punk pogo-ed its way into our consciousness. Punk Rock So What?brings together a new generation of academics, writers and journalists to provide the first comprehensive assessment of punk and its place in popular music history, culture and myth. The contributors, who include Suzanne Moore, Lucy OBrien, Andy Medhurst, Mark Sinker and Paul Cobley, challenge standard views of punk prevalent since the 1970s. They: * re-situate punk in its historical context, analysing the possible origins of punk in the New York art scene and Manchester clubs as well as in Malcolm McClarens brain * question whether punk deserves its reputation as an anti-fascist, anti-sexist movement which opened up opportunities for women musicians and fans alike. * trace punks long-lasting influence on comics, literature, art and cinema as well as music and fashion, from films such as Sid and Nancy and The Great Rock n Roll Swindle to work by contemporary artists such as Gavin Turk and Sarah Lucas. * discuss the role played by such key figures as Johnny Rotten, Richard Hell, Malcolm McClaren, Mark E. Smith and Viv Albertine. Punk Rock Revisited kicks over the statues of many established beliefs about the meaning of punk, concluding that, if anything, punk was more culturally significant than anybody has yet suggested, but perhaps for different reasons.

Book The White Stripes And The Sound Of Mutant Blues

Download or read book The White Stripes And The Sound Of Mutant Blues written by Everett TRUE and published by Omnibus Press. This book was released on 2010-03-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few years, Detroit bandmates Jack and Meg White have in conjunction with a stream of similar-minded bands, revitalised rock music. Their sound is raw, stripped right back -- back to the primal fury and alienation of bluesmen like Son House and protopunks The Stooges and the MC5. In the Stripes' hard knocks hometown of Detroit, an entire scene has emerged -- rudimentary, primordial garage rock championed by legendary names such as Mick 'Dirtbombs' Collins, Jack White's own Third Man Records, Electric Six and producer Jim Diamond. Over in Brooklyn meanwhile, loft parties are all the rage -- illegal happenings put on in abandoned buildings, fuelled by vodka stills and loud music, featuring names such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars and Oneida. Writer Everett True has already covered much of this music in his own underground rock magazine Careless Talk Costs Lives. Now he goes public with his passion, delving deep into the lives of the personalities who make up the scenes -- the countless hours touring, the celebrity girlfriends, the parties, the power and the people.

Book Rock and Roll Desegregation Movements and Racism in the Post Civil Rights Era

Download or read book Rock and Roll Desegregation Movements and Racism in the Post Civil Rights Era written by Beth Fowler and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-04-27 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rock and roll music that dominated airwaves across the country during the 1950s and early 1960s is often described as a triumph for integration. Black and white musicians alike, including Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Lee Lewis, scored hit records with young audiences from different racial groups, blending sonic traditions from R&B, country, and pop. This so-called "desegregation of the charts" seemed particularly resonant since major civil rights groups were waging major battles for desegregation in public places at the same time. And yet the centering of integration, as well as the supposition that democratic rights largely based in consumerism should be available to everyone regardless of race, has resulted in very distinct responses to both music and movement among Black and white listeners who grew up during this period. Rock and Roll, Desegregation Movements, and Racism in the Post-Civil Rights Era: An "Integrated Effort" traces these distinctions using archival research, musical performances, and original oral histories to determine the uncertain legacies of the civil rights movement and early rock and roll music in a supposedly post-civil rights era.
