Download or read book Hegemonic Cooperation and Conflict written by Qingxin K. Wang and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-08-30 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postwar Japan has consistently maintained close cooperation with the United States over the last four decades over such major issues as Japan's recognition of China, their peace treaties, and, more recently, Japan's resumption of the yen loan to China suspended in the wake of the Tiananmen incident. This has been in spite of Japan's well-known conflict of interests in China with the United States. Japan's cooperation with the United States sheds new light on some important questions which are central to current debates about the shape of the new world order in general, and America's world role in particular, in the post-Cold War era. What has been the role of American power in maintaining Japan's cooperation? What have been the bases of American hegemony in the post-war world? How has American hegemony changed over the years? Qingxin K. Wang addresses and illuminates these important questions through a detailed and provocative study of Japan's relations with the United States over China policy in the last four decades.
Download or read book Japan s Options for the 1980s written by Radha Sinha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-10-18 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan’s economic success since the 1950s created a range of serious domestic and international problems which threaten the stability of the country. Within Japan at the start of the 1980s there was a strong mood on the right for remilitarization to give the nation the super-power status her economic performance justified. Outside Japan, there was increasing pressure from the West to make her conform to Western strategic interests. Against the background of these crucial issues the book analyzes the economic, political and military options open to Japan. Focussing on the interconnecting themes of foreign harassment and domestic economic disorder, the author points out many areas of similarity between Japan of the 1930s and Japan of the 1980s.

Download or read book Trade and Protectionism written by Takatoshi Ito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first three decades following the Second World War, an increasingly open international trading system led to unprecedented economic growth throughout the world. But in recent years, that openness has been threatened by increased protectionism, regional trading arrangements—Europe 1992 and the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement—and setbacks in negotiations on the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. In Trade and Protectionism, American and East Asian scholars consider the dangers of this trend for the world economy and especially for East Asian countries. The authors look at the current global trading system and at the potential threats to East Asian economies from possible regional arrangements, such as separate trading blocks in the Western Hemisphere and Europe. They cover trade between the United States and Japan, Korea and Japan, and Japanese-East Asian trade policies; trade in agriculture and semiconductors and the frictions that have jeopardized this trade; and direct foreign investment. The contributors round out the work with discussions of the political economy of protection in Korea and Taiwan and political economy considerations as they affect trade policy in general. This is the second volume of the National Bureau of Economic Research-East Asia Seminar on Economics. The first volume, The Political Economy of Tax Reform, also edited by Takatoshi Ito and Anne O. Krueger, addresses tax reform in the global economy.

Download or read book Cooperation and Governance in International Trade written by Beth V. Yarbrough and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International trade liberalization historically has taken many organizational forms--unilateral, bilateral, minilateral, and multilateral. Given the proliferation of normative views about which of these should be pursued, economists and political scientists have devoted surprisingly little attention to the reasons for the observed variation in the chosen forms. This book is the first to develop a single theoretical framework to account for past liberalization practices and also to anticipate ongoing changes in the international organization of trade policy. Growing out of a multidisciplinary effort combining economics, politics, organization, and law, the book's strategic organizational approach will interest students of trade, international relations, or institutional arrangements. Central to the strategic organizational approach is the view that organizational variety reflects alternate governance structures used to facilitate and enforce agreements. Among the successes of the approach are explanations of unilateral liberalization by nineteenth-century Britain, U.S. governance of multilateral liberalization under the early postwar GATT, growing use of bilateral governance to limit nontariff trade barriers, and anticipation of major moves toward minilateral governance, such as Europe/1992 and the Canada-U.S. Free-Trade Agreement.
