This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the life and achievements of the eighteenth-century Scottish physician William Hunter and outlines the history of the Museum named after him. William Hunter built up a wide-ranging private collection at his home in London, encompassing not only anatomical and pathological specimens related to his medical work, but also books and manuscripts, coins and medals, natural history specimens and artworks. On his death in 1783 he bequeathed the collection to the University of Glasgow where he had long ago been a student, and money to construct a Museum which opened in 1807. The book utilises a wide range of source material, much of it previously unpublished, to tell the story of the Museum's development, the many subsequent additions to its holdings and, more recently, the construction of a new Hunterian Art Gallery which houses not only Hunter's own collection but also numerous works be James McNeill Whistler and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The Museum is celebrating its bicentenary in 2007.There is a foreward contributed by Sir Kenneth Calman, Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, and formerly Government Chief Medical Officer and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Durham

Book excerpt: "This new study focuses on a little-documented period of Whistler's career: his stay in Venice from 1879 to 1880. Arriving in the footsteps of such renowned artists as Canaletto, Guardi, and Turner, whose enthusiasm for representing the city was shared by so many Grand Tourists, Whistler was determined to do more than simply capture its popular views. He wanted to penetrate further - to achieve a greater understanding of the nature of Venice itself." "As this book reveals, Whistler's struggle to find a "Venice of the Venetians" proved profoundly significant, challenging and redefining the ways in which others viewed the city. It also traces the remarkable breadth of his influence on artists in Europe and the United States, including John Singer Sargent, whose lifelong association with Whistler - begun during their stay in Venice - receives a new, in-depth appraisal. Whistler's impact on pictorial photography, notably on the work of Alfred Stieglitz, is explored here for the first time."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author elucidates how the basis of Whistler as etcher and painter was his sense of design, from the frames he created to the environment in which he envisioned they would be displayed. As an extension to this dedication, Whistler designed domestic interiors, artists' studios, and temporary exhibition spaces, including the catalogs and leaflets accompanying the exhibits. His emphasis on simplicity, color and harmony, a stark contrast to the Victorian era during which Whistler lived, ushered in the 20th century with its modernist theory of decoration and Art Nouveau.

Book excerpt: This innovative and compelling study reconsiders Whistler?s work from the context of his military service and his relationship with ?nature at the margins?. Whistler came from a family of soldiers and engineers; his father, Major George Washington Whistler, was originally a US military engineer. Drawing and mapmaking were important components of the military training that Whistler acquired as an officer cadet at West Point Academy in 1851-4 and subsequently in the Drawing Department at the US Coast and Geodetic Survey, where he attempted to realise his father?s hopes that he would make engineering or architecture his profession. These influences in turn shaped Whistler?s attitude towards nature, as expressed in works ranging from his celebrated London ?Nocturnes? to his French coastal scenes ? all of which were created after Whistler moved permanently to Europe in 1855.00Exhibition: Compton Verney Art Gallery and Park, UK (20.10.-16.12.2018) / The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK (08.01.-17.03.2019) / Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK (30.03.-16.06.2019).
