Book excerpt: Excerpt from Whispers From the Fleet Encouraged by the indulgent attitude of my brother officers towards my late effort, in conjunction with the kind comments of the Press; I have ventured to bring out this second, and generally enlarged edition of " Whispers from the Fleet." The chief additions comprise a " Chapter Concerning Midshipmen," and an increase to the " Remarks on Steam Evolutions," and as I have been questioned, more than once, why there was but little mention of Gunnery in my first volume, there will now be found a few pages set apart for some "Hints" on that subject by Lieutenant H. Stirling Lecky of this ship, -as being no expert in that most important branch, I have not dared to plunge unsupported into an element in which I should be straightway choked by the knowledge and utterances of many competent authorities, and the shoemaker should stick to his last. Nevertheless whilst on the above topic, I can make the perhaps needless assertion, that the Navy fully recognizes that the Art of Gunnery is now far more vital to the Fleet than in former times. Book The Vanishing Fleets Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Vanishing Fleets Classic Reprint written by Roy Norton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vanishing Fleets This book makes no attempt to convey a lesson. It does, however, try to give a note of warning. National patriotism, national wealth, and national resources would all prove unavailing if the United States were suddenly confronted by a determined enemy with a preponderance of guns manned by veterans. The writer frankly admits he has no sympathy with those watchdogs of the treasury who decry naval expenditures and the persistent increase of the navy. He does not be lieve the navy adequate for the protection of the nation, nor does he think the army sufficient. He believes Governmental economies along other lines would enable the nation to bring its defense up to an invincible point without working any ma terial hardship on the gentlemen of the trusts who loudly claim' to pay nearly all the taxes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Ships Of the countless stories of naval action which I have listened to in the course of the months I have spent with the Grand Fleet, I cannot recall a single one which was told as the consequence of being asked for with malice aforethought. I have never yet found a man of action who was enamoured of the sound of his own voice raised in the recital of his own exploits, and if there is one thing more than another calculated to throw an otherwise not untalkative British Naval Officer into a state of uncommunicativeness, in comparison with which the traditional silence of the sphinx or the proverbial close-mouthedness of the clam are alike sheer garrulity, it is to ask him, point blank, to tell you (for instance) how he took his submarine into the Baltic, or what his destroyer did at Jutland, or how he fought his cruiser at Dogger Bank, or something similar. Book excerpt: Written in Soviet Moscow in the 1920s—but considered too subversive even to show to a publisher—the seven tales included here attest to Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky’s boundless imagination, black humor, and breathtaking irony: a man loses his way in the vast black waste of his own small room; the Eiffel Tower runs amok; a kind soul dreams of selling “everything you need for suicide”; an absentminded passenger boards the wrong train, winding up in a place where night is day, nightmares are the reality, and the backs of all facts have been broken; a man out looking for work comes across a line for logic but doesn’t join it as there’s no guarantee the logic will last; a sociable corpse misses his own funeral; an inventor gets a glimpse of the far-from-radiant communist future.

Book The Thousand

  • Author : Kevin Guilfoile
  • Publisher : Vintage

  • ISBN : 0307594351
  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book The Thousand written by Kevin Guilfoile and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-08-24 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin Guilfoile’s riveting follow-up to Cast of Shadows (“spellbinding”—Chicago Tribune; “a masterpiece of intelligent plotting”—Salon) centers on an extraordinary young woman’s race to find her father’s killer and to free herself from the cross fire of a centuries-old civil war in which she has unknowingly become ensnared. In 530 B.C., a mysterious ship appeared off the rainy shores of Croton, in what is now Italy. After three days the skies finally cleared and a man disembarked to address the curious and frightened crowd that had gathered along the wet sands. He called himself Pythagoras. Exactly what he said that day is unknown, but a thousand men and women abandoned their lives and families to follow him. They became a community. A school. A cult dedicated to the search for a mathematical theory of everything. Although Pythagoras would die years later, following a bloody purge, his disciples would influence Western philosophy, science, and mathematics for all time. Chicago, the present day. Canada Gold, a girl both gifted and burdened by uncanny mental abilities, is putting her skills to questionable use in the casinos and courthouses of Las Vegas when she finds herself drawn back to the city in which her father, the renowned composer Solomon Gold, was killed while composing his magnum opus. Beautiful, brilliant, troubled, Canada has never heard of the Thousand, a clandestine group of powerful individuals safeguarding and exploiting the secret teachings of Pythagoras. But as she struggles to understand her father’s unsolved murder, she finds herself caught in the violence erupting between members of the fractured ancient cult while she is relentlessly pursued by those who want to use her, those who want to kill her, and the one person who wants to save her. In an irresistibly ambitious novel that fuses historical fact with contemporary suspense, Kevin Guilfoile delivers an erudite, propulsively entertaining thriller that seamlessly traverses the realms of math, science, music, and philosophy. The Thousand is ringing confirmation of Guilfoile’s enormous talent. From the Hardcover edition.
