Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liz and Mike Wickins' book Whispers from the Depths ... The Kariba Story is more than just the story of the building of the Kariba Dam in the mid-1950s. Built in just five years against overwhelming odds, the dam is a monument to engineering excellence. Shrouded in political undertones, the construction of the dam was vital for the hydroelectric power it would provide for Zambia's burgeoning copper industry. Little thought, however, appears to have been given to the future of the human and animal populations who lived in the valley that would be inundated when the dam was completed. The question has to be asked: Was this awe-inspiring man-made creation achieved at too high a cost in terms of the human suffering and environmental devastation it caused? Central to the story of Kariba was the fate of the Tonga people who had for centuries lived in the Gwembe Valley, due to be flooded when the sluice gates were finally closed to halt the flow of the mighty Zambezi River. Approximately 57 000 people were forced to move from their ancestral homes, abandoning family graves and spiritual sites to the depths of Kariba's water. They became a dispersed people who have never been able to reunite as a cohesive society, never again been able to live peacefully on the banks of the river which gave them life. Animals, too, perished in their thousands despite the gallant efforts of wildlife personnel who mounted a hastily planned rescue mission known as Operation Noah. Whispers from the Depths gives a voice to the all but forgotten BaTonga. It celebrates their unique culture but deplores the price they paid for progress ... a price from which they themselves derived no benefit whatsoever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the heart of the restless sea, far from the warmth of the sun and the safety of land, there existed a legend whispered among sailors and pirates alike. It was a tale of a ghost ship, hidden within the fog and shadows, known only as the vessel that bore the whispers from the depths. This story, set in the 18th century, follows the ill-fated voyage of the Herald, a merchant ship bound for the New World, whose crew unwittingly finds themselves entangled in the curse of the whispering depths. Captain Edward Jameson, a seasoned mariner known for his bravery and somewhat reckless ambition, commanded the Herald. His crew, a mix of experienced seamen and eager young lads seeking adventure, respected him, though some whispered doubts about his obsession with finding and navigating through the legendary Devil's Triangle, a place rumored to be haunted by the spirits of the sea. One moonless night, as the Herald sailed through calm waters, the first mate, Thomas Hawkins, spotted a dense fog rolling towards them. It was an unnatural fog, thick and impenetrable, chilling to the bone. Captain Jameson, intrigued by the phenomenon, ordered the ship to continue its course. "Captain, are you sure it's wise to venture into that fog?" Thomas asked, his voice laced with concern. "Aye, Thomas. Fear not. Legends and superstitions won't deter us from our path," replied Captain Jameson, his eyes fixed on the horizon.

Liz Carr and Kim Henson find they have only skimmed the surface when it comes to the mysteries of the past and their lingering effects on the present. They are about to learn their lives and those of John Carter and Mark Adams are hopelessly tangled with Arvashan’s in a way they could never have expected. Liz has a few weeks to set her affairs in order and return with Arvashan to the past and a fate she has no memory of, or Arvashan will kill everyone she loves. The situation calls for a level of cunning and skill the friends will somehow have to find within themselves, along with a mastery of magic greater than any they possess, before they can emerge victorious over the ancient nemesis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Whispers From My Heart" is the tale of one woman's journey through the real world where pain, confusion, disappointments, and despair are real, every day occurrences. It voices the anguish that the human heart endures in a person termed "Adult Survivor of Childhood Sexual Assault." It echoes the same question that is on the hearts of everyday people, "Why?" "Whispers From My Heart" points to the One with the answer to that question. It is not a self-help book; it is a "God-can-help-you" book that teaches the powerful truth that God is still in the business of delivering His people from bondage, and leading them out of realms of captivity, into their promised land. Cheryl Thompson has been a single mother to Trey, Charlie and Brett since October of 1989. Through the trials of her childhood, and the struggles of single parenthood, Cheryl has learned first hand the importance of a heart attitude toward life and God, and how the that attitude impacts their soul and their relationship with God. She has a passion for the hurting and wounded Bride of Christ. Through her personal knowledge of the compassion of Jesus Christ, Cheryl relays the message of hope, healing and freedom to those who have endured sexual assault. She is a 1983 graduate of Christ For the Nations, Institute of Dallas, TX, and currently manages a small real estate company in Southern Illinois. Book excerpt: In the richly woven tapestry of "Whispers of the Forgotten: Tales from the Shadows," readers are invited on a journey through the veils of time and memory, exploring the spaces between light and shadow, remembered and erased. This anthology unfolds in a series of tales that traverse otherworldly dimensions, forgotten histories, and the profound depths of the human psyche, revealing the cyclical dance of forgetting and remembering that defines our existence. From Leo's odyssey into realms beyond comprehension, where ancient truths of existence are unveiled, to Miriam's struggle against a conspiracy that seeks to silence the voices of history, each narrative thread is a testament to the resilience of the forgotten and the power of truth to emerge from the shadows. Through their journeys, the characters challenge the constructs of time and identity, embarking on quests not only for recognition but for a reclamation of legacy. "Whispers of the Forgotten" is an invitation to reflect on the nature of memory, the fabric of history, and the enduring spirit of those voices lost to time. It poses poignant questions about what it means to be remembered and the lengths to which one must go to ensure that no story, no matter how faintly whispered, is left in the darkness. As the stories of the forgotten ones unfold, readers are offered a glimpse into the potential for new understandings of the past and the role each of us plays in the narrative of history. This anthology is not merely a collection of tales but a beacon, illuminating the shadows of forgotten histories and inspiring a cycle of remembering that transcends the pages of the book. Book Whispers in the Tall Grass

Download or read book Whispers in the Tall Grass written by Nick Brokhausen and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2019-10-19 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[An] exceptionally raw look at the Vietnam War . . . an excellent tribute to the generation that fought, laughed, and died in Southeast Asia.” —New York Journal of Books This is the second volume of a Green Beret’s riveting memoir of his time serving in Recon Teams Habu and Crusader, CNN, part of Military Assistance Command, Vietnam—Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG). Picking up where We Few left off, Whispers in the Tall Grass opens as the war moves into a new phase. The enemy are using special formations to hunt recon teams and missions are now rarely accomplished without heavy contact. Despite the teams’ careful prep, losses are mounting. More and more missions are extracted by Bright Lights until eventually classic recon missions are almost impossible, and the teams briefly trial HALO insertion. Finally, as the US prepares to withdraw, the teams undertake back-to-back missions directing air strikes and disrupting supply lines to ease the pressure on the ARVN. Broken by the pace, but desperate not to leave the Yards, Brokhausen is ordered to out-process, his request for extension denied, and is forced to leave his friends—his brothers—behind. Written in the same vivid, immediate style that made We Few a cult classic, Whispers in the Tall Grass follows Habu, Crusader and other teams as they undertake missions in this new, deadlier phase of the war. The narrative veers from hair-raising to tragic and back as the teams insert into hot targets, act as Bright Light for stricken teams, and play hard in between missions to diffuse the ever-rising tension. “Brokhausen tells all in a masterfully gonzo style of reporting and recollection shaped by clever gallows humor.” —Booklist
