Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liz and Mike Wickins' book Whispers from the Depths ... The Kariba Story is more than just the story of the building of the Kariba Dam in the mid-1950s. Built in just five years against overwhelming odds, the dam is a monument to engineering excellence. Shrouded in political undertones, the construction of the dam was vital for the hydroelectric power it would provide for Zambia's burgeoning copper industry. Little thought, however, appears to have been given to the future of the human and animal populations who lived in the valley that would be inundated when the dam was completed. The question has to be asked: Was this awe-inspiring man-made creation achieved at too high a cost in terms of the human suffering and environmental devastation it caused? Central to the story of Kariba was the fate of the Tonga people who had for centuries lived in the Gwembe Valley, due to be flooded when the sluice gates were finally closed to halt the flow of the mighty Zambezi River. Approximately 57 000 people were forced to move from their ancestral homes, abandoning family graves and spiritual sites to the depths of Kariba's water. They became a dispersed people who have never been able to reunite as a cohesive society, never again been able to live peacefully on the banks of the river which gave them life. Animals, too, perished in their thousands despite the gallant efforts of wildlife personnel who mounted a hastily planned rescue mission known as Operation Noah. Whispers from the Depths gives a voice to the all but forgotten BaTonga. It celebrates their unique culture but deplores the price they paid for progress ... a price from which they themselves derived no benefit whatsoever.

Book African Women Writers and the Politics of Gender

Download or read book African Women Writers and the Politics of Gender written by Sadia Zulfiqar and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the work of a group of African women writers who have emerged over the last forty years. While figures such as Chinua Achebe, Ben Okri and Wole Soyinka are likely to be the chief focus of discussions of African writing, female authors have been at the forefront of fictional interrogations of identity formation and history. In the work of authors such as Mariama Bâ (Senegal), Buchi Emecheta (Nigeria), Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (Nigeria), Tsitsi Dangarembga (Zimbabwe), and Leila Aboulela (Sudan), there is a clear attempt to subvert the tradition of male writing where the female characters are often relegated to the margins of the culture, and confined to the domestic, private sphere. This body of work has already generated a significant number of critical responses, including readings that draw on gender politics and colonialism, but it is still very much a minor literature, and most mainstream western feminism has not sufficiently processed it. The purpose of this book is three-fold. First, it draws together some of the most important and influential African women writers of the post-war period and looks at their work, separately and together, in terms of a series of themes and issues, including marriage, family, polygamy, religion, childhood, and education. Second, it demonstrates how African literature produced by women writers is explicitly and polemically engaged with urgent political issues that have both local and global resonance: the veil, Islamophobia and a distinctively African brand of feminist critique. Third, it revisits Fredric Jameson’s claim that all third-world texts are “national allegories” and considers these novels by African women in relation to Jameson’s claim, arguing that their work has complicated Jameson’s assumptions.

Book excerpt: The first time Tiffany Abernathy travels through time is in 1898, right before her parents are killed. An automobile runs their carriage off the road. Tiffany is thrown into a nearby tree, while her parents plunge to their deaths at the bottom of a ravine. As Tiffany hangs from its limbs, the tree is struck by lightning; strangely, Tiffany finds herself transported decades into the future. It wont be the last time. Although Tiffany eventually returns to 1898, in 1910, an even bigger shock comes her way. Directly following her wedding, an electric shock sends her to the year 2011. Tiffany understands what has occurred, but her great-granddaughter, Kate Dixon, does not. Suddenly, Kate finds herself transported to the year 1910. Not only that, but she is inhabiting the body of Mrs. Tiffany Abernathy Nichols. A modern science experiment has created a black hole deep beneath the surface of Portland, Maine. Time travel occurs through this black hole, but the ramifications are much more severe than body-swapping. Because of the black hole, the trajectory of Earth in 1910 has been thrown into the path of Halleys Comet and certain destruction. Will Tiffany and Kate be able to fix what has been done, or will they also die, each trapped in the body of the other?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Olney demonstrates that autobiography, because it provides the most direct narrative enactments of the ways, motives, and beliefs of a culture, is an excellent way to approach African literature. After a general discussion of the African ethos, each chapter takes up the "autobiographical" literature of a specific group in African society and treats it as both an expression of a personal vision and as a revelation of a permeating social reality. Book Black Africa

Download or read book Black Africa written by V. Klima and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1972, our Czech-written book Literatury eerne Afriky (Literatures of Black Mrica) was published in Prague, presenting a survey of an extensive field. The publication, which was signed at that time by all three authors, differed from most contemporary introductions to the study of Mrican literatures in a threefold way: a) The authors attempted to cover various literacy and literary efforts in the area roughly delimited by Senegal in the west, Kenya in the east, Lake Chad in the north and the Cape in the south. We were well aware-even at that time-that neither technically nor linguistically would it be possible to cover all literary efforts within that area. We did try, however, to include in our survey both the literacies and literatures written in the Indo-European linguae francae (English, French, Portuguese) and in at least several of the major African languages of the area. We did not attempt an exhaustive description, but wished, rather, to show the mutual relationships which emerge, if the literatures of thii\ area, written either in the major linguae francae or in the African languages, are studied not as isolated phenomena, but as mutually complementary features. b) As two of us were linguists and one was a literary historian, we did not limit our analysis of the developing literacies and literatures to the purely cultural and literary aspects. Our intention waR to deal-whcre and if it was relevant-not only with the process of African literary development, but also with the simultaneous, complementar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How deep are you willing to go to unlock the mystery? ------------------------ A young hotshot journalist's life unravels in a web of mystery and horror when he is called back to a home and family he hasn't seen in over a decade. He returns home after the mysterious death of his grandfather, a WWII vet who has seen, first hand, the horrors of life and man. From the beaches of Normandy to the bitter cold of Bastogne; he was a respected hero and man of great strength both physically and mentally. A man who was confined to an asylum in the last weeks of his life; where he spoke of demonic entities, faceless spirits who tormented him relentlessly, and images depicting a black shadowed poltergeist in a top hat and grin. A "sniveling whelp," as he would once say, confined to an asylum where he carved and drew strange markings upon the floor, the ceiling, the walls; stories and tales told all leading to a nameless vessel. A ghost ship that has drank the most ancient of blood. Tasted the most ancient of flesh. A vessel that has now...awoken. Now hunted by the shadowed entity of his grandfather's past and its dark brethren of phantom wraiths, macabre menace, and demonic beasts, Randy Conroy must survive the nightmare his grandfather could not. "A first class ghost story....intensely visual!" Mister Lobo, (nationally syndicated horror host) "Matthew Ewald's love of horror is matched only by his love of mystery--the tale unfolds like a descriptive Film Noir in which the mysteries grab us long before we realize we are actually down a terrifying path into the horror genre..." -- Michele Specht (Corporal Simone Cole -- Clive Barker's "Jericho") "Take yourself into the hollowed bowels of the Queen Mary...then drown in Ewald's brutal and haunting prose." -- Wayne Allen Sallee (Five time Bram Stoker Award Nominee and author of "The Holy Terror," "With Wounds Still Wet," "Fiends By Torchlight," and the upcoming "Proactive Contrition")
