Book Interface Chemistry in Ceramic Matrix Composites

Download or read book Interface Chemistry in Ceramic Matrix Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many possible effects of interface reactions in fiber or whisker reinforced glass or glass ceramic matrix composites. In most cases, interface reactions must be minimized because they can lead to degradation of fiber or whisker strength, destruction of interphase coatings, and modification of the interface adhesion. Nevertheless, there are systems where interface reactions are beneficial. The best example of this is in the NiCALON reinforced glass-ceramic composites where carbon interphases are generated during processing; this carbon interphase facilitates fiber pullout, and thereby, is responsible for the outstanding room-temperature toughness of these materials. There have also been suggestions, although less well documented, that interface reactions can create carbide, nitride and mullite interphases that passivate the interface to subsequent oxidation.

Book Ceramic Matrix Composites

Download or read book Ceramic Matrix Composites written by I M Low and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-25 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of engineering-designed polymer matrix composites in the late 1940s has provided an impetus for the emergence of sophisticated ceramic matrix composites. The development of CMCs is a promising means of achieving lightweight, structural materials combining high temperature strength with improved fracture toughness, damage tolerance and thermal shock resistance. Considerable research effort is being expended in the optimisation of ceramic matrix composite systems, with particular emphasis being placed on the establishment of reliable and cost-effective fabrication procedures. Ceramic matrix composites consists of a collection of chapters reviewing and describing the latest advances, challenges and future trends in the microstructure and property relationship of five areas of CMCs. Part one focuses on fibre, whisker and particulate-reinforced ceramic matrix composites, part two explores graded and layered ceramics, while the five chapters in part three cover nanostructured CMCs in some detail. Refractory and speciality ceramic composites are looked at in part four, with chapters on magnesia-spinel composite refractory materials, thermal shock of CMCs and superplastic CMCs. Finally, part four is dedicated to non-oxide ceramic composites. Ceramic matrix composites is a comprehensive evaluation of all aspects of the interdependence of processing, microstructure, properties and performance of each of the five categories of CMC, with chapters from experienced and established researchers. It will be essential for researchers and engineers in the field of ceramics and more widely, in the field of inorganic materials. Looks at the latest advances, challenges and future trends Compiled by experienced and established researchers in the field Essential for researchers and engineers

Book Ceramic Composites Reinforced with Modified Silicon Carbide Whiskers and Method for Modifying the Whiskers

Download or read book Ceramic Composites Reinforced with Modified Silicon Carbide Whiskers and Method for Modifying the Whiskers written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon carbide whisker-reinforced ceramic composites are fabricated in a highly reproducible manner by beneficating the surfaces of the silicon carbide whiskers prior to their usage in the ceramic composites. The silicon carbide whiskers which contain considerable concentrations of surface oxides and other impurities which interact with the ceramic composite material to form a chemical bond are significantly reduced so that only a relatively weak chemical bond is formed between the whisker and the ceramic material. Thus, when the whiskers interact with a crack propagating into the composite the crack is diverted or deflected along the whisker-matrix interface due to the weak chemical bonding so as to deter the crack propagation through the composite. The depletion of the oxygen-containing compounds and other impurities on the whisker surfaces and near surface region is effected by heat treating the whiskers in a suitable oxygen sparaging atmosphere at elevated temperatures. Additionally, a sedimentation technique may be utilized to remove whiskers which suffer structural and physical anomalies which render them undesirable for use in the composite. Also, a layer of carbon may be provided on the surface of the whiskers to further inhibit chemical bonding of the whiskers to the ceramic composite material.

Book Interface Chemical Modification for Property Control of Oxide Reinforced Ceramic Matrix Composites

Download or read book Interface Chemical Modification for Property Control of Oxide Reinforced Ceramic Matrix Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Air Force requirements for high temperature structural materials include applications in aircraft afterburner and in propulsion systems. Ceramic matrix composites are candidate materials systems for several types of these applications. In the effort to develop composites for high temperature structural applications attention has turned towards oxide-oxide systems. The objective of this project is to systematically investigate the segregation behavior and high temperature stability of complex oxides. The project has an experimental and a theoretical component. The approach combines Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) and scanning probe microscopies (STM, AFM), along with conventional transmission and scanning electron microscopies (TEM, SEM) to characterize surface and interface composition. The theoretical approach emphasizes a coherent model of segregation that connects statistical mechanics and first principles calculations. This work is in collaboration with the R. Kerans and the Ceramics Group at Wright Patterson Air Force Base.
