Book While Listening to the Enigma Variations

Download or read book While Listening to the Enigma Variations written by Diane Frank and published by . This book was released on 2021-02 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this new and startling collection, Diane Frank's poems transcend not just genres but entire dimensions. When she speaks to J.S. Bach, she really means it and when Bach speaks back, she listens - entirely - the way certain moths perceive sound via their whole body, even their wings. How is this accomplished? It will seem to come through the poems themselves - their music, tonal qualities and subjects, yet it goes even deeper as it pushes up like duende through the soles of your feet. The voice is declarative, emphatic, spirit driven. She will tell you, 'When a buffalo enters your dream, / listen for arpeggio hooves, / the weight of music, / a copper moon / above a vanishing prairie' and you will, you must listen." Lois P. Jones, author of Night Ladder Radio Host, KPFK's Poets Café

Book excerpt: Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations is a compositional masterpiece that gained him recognition as one of England's most beloved composers. Enigma Variations propelled the composer from musical obscurity to England's high society, and was praised by contemporary musical luminaries such as Hans Richter and Richard Strauss. In addition to earning Elgar a knighthood and recognition among the general public, Variations is a seminal work with a place in every major orchestras standard repertoire. In particular, Variation IX (Nimrod) has become an audience favorite across the globe, and can be heard in countless film and TV soundtracks. This thesis will detail the process of preparing and performing Elgar's masterwork with the CSUN Youth Orchestra Philharmonic. Areas of focus include a historical and thematic description of the piece, effective score study techniques, and rehearsal and performance issues unique to Enigma Variations. Rehearsals were conducted through the early spring of 2017, and the performance took place on March 5, 2017 at Plaza Del Sol on the campus of California State University Northridge. This performance was done in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting under the supervision of Dr. John Roscignio.

Download or read book Enigma Variations written by André Aciman and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From André Aciman, the author of Call Me by Your Name (now a major motion picture and the winner of the OscarTM for Best Adapted Screenplay) comes “a sensory masterclass, absorbing, intelligent, unforgettable” (Times Literary Supplement). André Aciman, hailed as a writer of “fiction at its most supremely interesting” (The New York Review of Books), has written a novel that charts the life of a man named Paul, whose loves remain as consuming and as covetous throughout his adulthood as they were in his adolescence. Whether the setting is southern Italy, where as a boy he has a crush on his parents’ cabinetmaker, or a snowbound campus in New England, where his enduring passion for a girl he’ll meet again and again over the years is punctuated by anonymous encounters with men; whether he’s on a tennis court in Central Park, or on a New York sidewalk in early spring, his attachments are ungraspable, transient, and forever underwritten by raw desire—not for just one person’s body but, inevitably, for someone else’s as well. In Enigma Variations, Aciman maps the most inscrutable corners of passion, proving to be an unsparing reader of the human psyche and a master stylist. With language at once lyrical, bare-knuckled, and unabashedly candid, he casts a sensuous, shimmering light over each facet of desire to probe how we ache, want, and waver, and ultimately how we sometimes falter and let go of those who may want to offer only what we crave from them. Ahead of every step Paul takes, his hopes, denials, fears, and regrets are always ready to lay their traps. Yet the dream of love lingers. We may not always know what we want. We may remain enigmas to ourselves and to others. But sooner or later we discover who we’ve always known we were.
