Book excerpt: Since Columbus landed in the West Indies in 1492, Native American tribes have endured more than five centuries of abuse hypocrisy, indifference and bloodshed at the hands of the ''Christian'' white man. Despite this painful history, a number of Native Americans have found ''the Jesus Way'' and are proving to be a powerful voice for the Lord around the world. A full - blooded Lakota/Sioux whose bitterness toward whites was washed away by the blood of Christ, Richard Twiss shows that Native American Christians have much to offer the Church and can become a major force for reaching the lost. Full of wisdom, humor and passion, this book examines how the white Church can begin to break down the walls of anger, distrust and bitterness and move toward reconciliation and revival in our land.

Book excerpt: There is today a dramatic reexamination of structure, authority, dogma -- indeed, every aspect of the life of the Church is held up to scrutiny. Welcoming this as a sign of vitality, Avery Dulles has carefully studied the writings of contemporary Protestant and Catholic ecclesiologists and sifted out six major approaches, or "models," through which the Church's character can be understood: as Institution, Mystical Communion, Sacrament, Herald, Servant, and, in a recent addition to the book, as Community of Disciples. A balanced theology, he concludes, must incorporate the major affirmations of each. "The method of models or types," observes Cardinal Dulles, "can have great value in helping people to get beyond the limitations of their own particular outlook and to enter into fruitful conversation with others... Such conversation is obviously essential if ecumenism is to get beyond its present impasses." This new edition includes a new Appendix and Preface by the author.

Download or read book One Assembly written by Jonathan Leeman and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many churches are switching to the multisite or multiservice models to manage crowded sanctuaries due to growing attendance. This solution seems sensible in the short term, but too often churches adopt this model without taking into consideration what the Bible says about it. Illuminating the importance of physical togetherness as a way to protect the gospel, this book argues that maintaining a single assembly best embodies the unity the church possesses in Jesus Christ. Jonathan Leeman considers a series of biblical, theological, and pastoral arguments that ask us to stop and examine intuitions or assumptions about what a church is. He reorients our minds to a biblical definition of church, offering examples of churches that have thrived with a single service at a single site and compelling alternatives for those looking to solve the complications that come with a growing church.

Combining insights from multisite church pastor Brad House and Christian theology professor Gregg Allison, this book will help anyone interested in multiplying gospel-centered churches to effectively evaluate and develop the best multisite model for their own church context. In MultiChurch, you will: Explore the opportunities presented by the various forms of multi-site church. Identify areas of concern while addressing criticisms against multisite models. Book excerpt: **** PREFACE **** BY THE AUTHOR HARRY KINDER The title ONE TRUE CHURCH "Ekklesia of Christ," sets forth its content in a detail study of the scriptures and ties them all together to prove in actuality there is only One True Church, which belongs to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The study of scriptures is sometimes simple to understand, and to many, may be difficult. Therefore, we begin with simplicity and gradually the underlying reasoning may be, slightly more or less comprehensive to some readers. We begin with a "fable" of an extremely ignorant man's knowledge of religious matters and interweave "scripture truth" along with his cause and source of distress, by answering his questions by use of the scriptures. However, by meeting an elderly preacher man, finely thru perseverance, his problem is solved. The reader will find the Holy Bible to be Authentic and not just another book. The information written is to prove the Authenticity of the Holy Bible. The writing will make any sensible person come to the realization that it is the Inspired Word of God. The mathematical laws of compound probabilities should astound him. All one has to do is read with an open mind to come to that realization of probabilities. This chapter is written for those that believe some of the scriptures. Then there are those who do not believe one word. (These are the Atheist). However, we have assumed those that read this book is a Believer of the Holy Bible, from cover to cover. This chapter of authenticity will fortify what is believed by many with some interesting concepts to speak for the inspiration of God's Holy Word when faced with that challenge. Next, we will ask ourselves the question; what is it with all these churches, which have different names, doctrines and teachings? When we use the word churches, it actually means to the writer, Christian Faith Based Assemblies. Knowing all the time, there is only "One True Church." We do not want to call them, whatever they appear to be, "a church," because Christ only built one AND IT IS NOT A BUILDING. The others are "buildings" with a name associated with the building that allows people to gather, and supposedly assemble to worship. Christ said: Matt 15:9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. Therefore, it only make sense if there can only be "One True Church," why have buildings with all the various identifications that assemble under the guise of CHRISTIANITY? In our quest to find the "One True Church" that Christ was going to build, it seemed reasonable to find out the Characteristics of that "One True Church." Therefore, we set out to find the Characteristics of that Church which will prove to the reader there is only "One." It only takes logic, a sensible mind and a sincere desire to learn the truth, then, the reader can only come to that conclusion. We will present to you scripturally, many of these Characteristics (16) in number, with scripture to prompt a person to undoubtedly come to agreement with its content. It is simple, and straightforward with no path to be taken, no theological disagreements can be asserted except the truth. We have anticipated questions that the reader may ask, and have given the reader the question, and a scriptural answer to that question. There are (14) questions of interest the writer believes you would ask, if we were face to face having a conversation of these biblical studies. A complete list of beliefs are written in which we feel strongly that denominations in fact have "Unity." Although, many denominations do not realize that "born again" Christians have (estimated) approximately 90% "unity" and 10% disunity with Christian Based Assemblies. Our Lord in His Prayer wanted us all to be as ONE. Then of course, this would make 100% in unity. The 10% are very major differences, and as to why this difference exists, I attempt to point those out to the reader. All scriptur

Book Church Order in the New Testament

Download or read book Church Order in the New Testament written by Eduard Schweizer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-07-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schweizer listens carefully to the testimony of the various New Testament writers in order to understand the theological problem of how the New Testament church understood itself, and how it expressed that understanding in its order. The purely historical question about the form of the church at different times is seen by Schweizer as necessary, but need only be asked insofar as the actual shaping of the church is always evidence of the concept of its own nature to which it testifies. Thus, Schweizer arranges the New Testament writings primarily by the theological kinship of their idea of the church, providing a comprehensive examination of the church in the New Testament and Apostolic Fathers. He treats both the diversity of views and the unity found in these writings. He also discusses issues relating to church office, ministry, and ordination.
