Book excerpt: "Finding the determinants of the total factor productivity at a firm level helps to understand and analyze more deeply the technological changes and its direction. The type of innovations a firm would have access will differ within the sector because a firm?s characteristic and possibilities. This following research shows that large firms have the capacity to do support their research and development process to induce neutral technological change in general represented as a shift effect on the production function. While small firm lack this capacity and dedicate their internal fund to imitate leaders and improve their process inducing bias technological change, a bias effect on the production function isoquants." -- Tomado del Formato de Documento de Grado.

Book Firm Innovation and Productivity in Latin America and the Caribbean

Download or read book Firm Innovation and Productivity in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Inter-American Development Bank and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume uses the study of firm dynamics to investigate the factors preventing faster productivity growth in Latin America and the Caribbean, pushing past the limits of traditional macroeconomic analyses. Each chapter is dedicated to an examination of a different factor affecting firm productivity - innovation, ICT usage, on-the-job-training, firm age, access to credit, and international linkages - highlighting the differences in firm characteristics, behaviors, and strategies. By showcasing this remarkable heterogeneity, this collection challenges regional policymakers to look beyond one-size-fits-all solutions and create balanced policy mixes tailored to distinct firm needs. Book Innovation and Its Effects on Employment Composition

Download or read book Innovation and Its Effects on Employment Composition written by Juan-Felipe Mejia and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyses the effects of innovation on employment in Colombian firms for the manufacturing and service sectors in two different periods: 2007-2010 for the manufacturing industry, and 2010-2011 for the service industry. Based on the theoretical framework proposed by Harrison et al. (2014), we test this relationship using instrumental variables techniques. Data proceed from The Annual Manufacturing Survey, The Development and Technological Innovation Industrial Survey, and The Development and Technological Innovation Services Survey, all of them collected by the Colombian National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE). Our empirical results show that sales growth due to new products positively affects employment growth, and process innovation has not a displacement effect on employment growth. This is robust to different specifications and the inclusion of control variables.

Book Effects of Innovative Effort on Different Components of Productivity

Download or read book Effects of Innovative Effort on Different Components of Productivity written by Fernando Barrios Aguirre and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document focuses on estimating the effect of innovative effort on productivity, when it is disaggregated in terms of productive technical efficiency and other components associated with demand and unit input costs . These components are developed and estimated from panel data. I show that demand characteristics are the elements where the innovative effort affects in greater proportion. Thus, if the objective is to increase physical productivity, a strategy would be to increase by 1% amounts invested in internal R& D, technology transfer and technical assistance and consulting. Thus, TFPQ would increase between 0.04% and 0.07%. The increase of amounts in marketing of innovations, internal R & D and the one of technical assistance and consulting would increase the characteristics of demand between 0.40% and 0.43%; finally, increasing the acquisition of machinery and equipment by 1% for the promotion of innovation would generate a reduction in input costs between 0.07% and 0.05%. These results will be analyzed from the annual manufacturing survey (EAM) between 2003-2012 and the surveys of innovation and technological development for the manufacturing industry (EDIT) provided by the DANE between 2008-2012.

Book Innovation in AEC Colombian Industry

Download or read book Innovation in AEC Colombian Industry written by Laura Andrea Gutiérrez Bucheli and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is determine the principal characteristics of the innovation in the Colombia industry with interviews of the important firms that nowadays implement innovation process and are in the initiative "Comacol Innova 2020". The characterization is carried out by data analysis using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to determine the importance of the factors that most affect innovation. The Analytic Hierarchy Process is a method of Multi-criteria Decision Making (MCDM), which structure a problem from judgments based on knowledge, reason or feelings of the decision makers to derive a set of priorities for activities. lt has been believed that the AHP is appropriate to assist decision-making problems characterized by a number of interrelated factor. Recently, a derivative of the AHP, the so-called fuzzy AHP, has been developed by mixing AHP with a fuzzy set theory that have been extended its application areas in construction management. However, the derivate of the AHP with Monte Carlo Simulation has not been used in industry. This research aims to compare the two leads to have more accurate data and confident; besides involving the Monte Carlo simulation as an alternative to the analysis of data that has been successful in other context.

Book Distance to the Port and Competitiveness in Colombian Manufacturing Sector

Download or read book Distance to the Port and Competitiveness in Colombian Manufacturing Sector written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the impact of the distance to the port on firms production in Colombias manufacturing sector. A simple statistical model, using detailed firm-level survey data, measures the effect of distance to port on firms level of production, controlling for regular inputs of production and basic traits such as industry and size. The hypothesis tested is whether distance to the port does play a significant role in explaining variation of firms production other characteristics being equal. Econometric results show that distance to port is not a significant determinant of productivity, ceteris paribus, for firms that export little or none of their production, but it is an important determinant of productivity for exporting firms. As the proportion of total production exported by the firm increases, the impact, of being farther away from the coast, on production decreases. A rough estimate of the needed reduction on transportation costs, measured in terms of a reduction in the average physical distance from exporting firms to the port, is 1,290 km. This reduction would be needed in order to compensate a planned total investment of COL$38.5 trillions in a period of fifteen years. The impact of government investments on transport infrastructure has multiple dimensions. A comprehensive analysis of the cost effectiveness of these investments would require additional data and tools that are beyond the scope of this paper. This paper concludes that the government agenda to invest in transport infrastructure to improve competitiveness is in the right direction, but it is urgent to estimate more precisely the level of required investments that would lead to the desired improvement in trade competitiveness. By doing this, the government would have better tools to target and prioritize the specific investments in the overall policy agenda for infrastructure and competitiveness.

Book excerpt: This paper discusses the impact of the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in the financial sector. It highlights the benefits these technologies bring in terms of financial deepening and efficiency, while raising concerns about its potential in widening the digital divide between advanced and developing economies. The paper advances the discussion on the impact of this technology by distilling and categorizing the unique risks that it could pose to the integrity and stability of the financial system, policy challenges, and potential regulatory approaches. The evolving nature of this technology and its application in finance means that the full extent of its strengths and weaknesses is yet to be fully understood. Given the risk of unexpected pitfalls, countries will need to strengthen prudential oversight.

Download or read book Making It Big written by Andrea Ciani and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic and social progress requires a diverse ecosystem of firms that play complementary roles. Making It Big: Why Developing Countries Need More Large Firms constitutes one of the most up-to-date assessments of how large firms are created in low- and middle-income countries and their role in development. It argues that large firms advance a range of development objectives in ways that other firms do not: large firms are more likely to innovate, export, and offer training and are more likely to adopt international standards of quality, among other contributions. Their particularities are closely associated with productivity advantages and translate into improved outcomes not only for their owners but also for their workers and for smaller enterprises in their value chains. The challenge for economic development, however, is that production does not reach economic scale in low- and middle-income countries. Why are large firms scarcer in developing countries? Drawing on a rare set of data from public and private sources, as well as proprietary data from the International Finance Corporation and case studies, this book shows that large firms are often born large—or with the attributes of largeness. In other words, what is distinct about them is often in place from day one of their operations. To fill the “missing top†? of the firm-size distribution with additional large firms, governments should support the creation of such firms by opening markets to greater competition. In low-income countries, this objective can be achieved through simple policy reorientation, such as breaking oligopolies, removing unnecessary restrictions to international trade and investment, and establishing strong rules to prevent the abuse of market power. Governments should also strive to ensure that private actors have the skills, technology, intelligence, infrastructure, and finance they need to create large ventures. Additionally, they should actively work to spread the benefits from production at scale across the largest possible number of market participants. This book seeks to bring frontier thinking and evidence on the role and origins of large firms to a wide range of readers, including academics, development practitioners and policy makers.
